CAP 2021 41st Annual ConventionThe Caribbean Association of Pharmacists in collaboration with the Bahamas Pharmaceutical Association presents the 41st Annual Convention from August 8 to 14 at Atlantis Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas. “Pharmacy Practice: Exploring New Horizons in a Changing World” is a hybrid event, welcoming both live and virtual participants. Apotex continues to support the CAP conference as the Educational Partner, and this year will be a Platinum Sponsor for the entire event. We are also proud to bring you the Caribbean Pharmacist of the Year award. We thank everyone who visits our booth to obtain more information about Apotex and our expanded portfolio. Yvette Ferguson from Nassau Agency will answer any questions.

St. Vincent VolcanoIn April, St. Vincent’s La Soufrière volcano began a sustained eruption that has displaced thousands of people and continues to greatly impact daily life on the island. Apotex quickly collaborated with Pamela Townsend, Executive Director of the Caribbean Association of Pharmacists, to identify the most urgently needed medicines and prepare a donation shipment of pharmaceuticals to support the population. We recognize the resilience of St. Vincent as the recovery efforts continue.

During Health Canada’s thorough drug review process, generic products are examined for their adherence to high standards of bioequivalence, quality, labelling and risk mitigation. From time to time, we hear of companies selling pharmaceuticals in the Caribbean who have some affiliation with Canada (such as an office or mailing address), but they do not have approval to sell any of their drug products in Canada. Products that have achieved regulatory approval in Canada can be identified using the following publicly available resources:

1. Health Canada’s Notice of Compliance Index

When Health Canada approves a product, a Drug Identification Number (DIN) or Natural Product Number (NPN) is assigned which must be printed on the package. A market authorization is issued (Notice of Compliance) where appropriate and the product is added to a searchable online index covering product approvals since 1994, available at this link: https://health-products.canada.ca/noc-ac/index-eng.jsp

2. Health Canada’s Drug Product Database

Approved products are also added to Health Canada’s Drug Product Database, where commercialization status and approved product monographs are available. This database can be found through the following link: https://health-products.canada.ca/dpd-bdpp/index-eng.jsp
