The Impact of Philanthropy

The power of philanthropy at Kalispell Regional Healthcare (KRH) is evident every day to our caregivers and our patients. Over the past 13 years more than $35 million in your exceptional support has led to:

• adding image-guided radiation therapy,

• the Winkley Women’s Center mobile mammography coach,

• the Bass Breast Center,

• a new Cancer Support and Survivorship program,

• hospice bereavement services,

• a new emergency department,

• two new wheelchair accessible vans for ASSIST,

• a new A.L.E.R.T. helicopter,

• building strong endowments for the future,

• expanded classroom sizes at our MSU–Nursing Kalispell campus training our future nurses,

• grants to support our efforts to care for babies who are victims of the opioid crisis,

• a duplex for families of pediatric patients,

• a new structural heart surgical suite for heart procedures,

• our new Montana Children’s facility and programs,

• and so much more.

The facilities, equipment, programs and training are all made possible because of you, our friends. You have the power of philanthropy.

Looking forward we will place extra emphasis in the coming years on developing the needed support for our commitment to Montana’s children through Montana Children’s while continuing to garner support for our other critical programs and services. This facility and its services will allow families to stay in Montana to receive their pediatric specialty care in a facility uniquely designed to care for children.

The other emphasis will be to replace the Winkley Women’s Center coach which has travelled more than 325,000 miles, provided more than 21,000 screenings and detected 160 early stage cancers. This mobile mammography coach has served communities without digital mammography in northcentral and northwest Montana for more than 11 years. The mammography machine is no longer functioning and the coach is no longer

viable. Save a Sister and the KRH Foundation are taking the lead to replace this critical service to our rural communities. We hope to have the funds raised by fall of 2019 to get this service back on the road to meet the needs of our patients in these rural communities.

Staff and patients at Rocky Mountain Heart & Lung pay it forward

The doctor’s office can be a scary place for a child. The intimidating machines, and the fear of the unknown may be incredibly overwhelming, especially for the first time. While there is no one way to keep a pediatric patient from being scared, there are ways to make them feel more comfortable.

In 2017, staff at Rocky Mountain Heart & Lung contacted the Kalispell Regional Healthcare (KRH) Foundation about supplying teddy bears for their pediatric patients during echocardiograms. Echocardiograms are non-invasive ultrasound imaging tests used to view the heart in motion. The Foundation had already been supplying teddy bears to both Kalispell Regional Medical Center and The HealthCenter and was happy to supply Rocky Mountain Heart & Lung’s pediatric patients with bears as well.

According to Debbie Allen, practice specialist at Rocky Mountain Heart & Lung, the teddy bears have had a tremendous impact. “Some of the kids who come in here are downright frightened, they don’t know what’s going on, they don’t know that it’s not going to hurt,” says Allen. “To be able to give them that bear makes all the difference. It provides them with a sense of comfort.”

In November of 2018, Allen wanted to help pay back the Foundation. “It’s a great thing for the children who come in here and we all really appreciate it.” She created a colorful donation box and placed it at the front desk with a sign to remind staff to donate if they could. However, patients began to notice it too. “It turned out they were thrilled to donate to the teddy bear fund as well,” says Allen. “Many of them know firsthand how meaningful

those bears are.”

Thanks to the generosity of both staff and patients at Rocky Mountain Heart & Lung, Allen was able to donate $200 to the Foundation’s pediatric fund.

The Foundation supplies teddy bears to Surgical Services at KRMC and The Healthcenter, Rocky Mountain Heart & Lung, the Sleep Center and the Neuroscience & Spine Institute.

Montana Family Practice Physician of the YearWe are pleased to announce that Dr. Edward Stein of Eureka Healthcare and Kalispell Regional Healthcare has been selected as the Montana Family Practice Physician of the Year.

This is an award based on nominations from medical staff, peers and leaders statewide. One former student of Dr. Stein wrote, “Spending this much time in the community, he is able to treat a patient for their entire life, not just a single visit.”

Dr. Stein has been a supporter of the KRH Foundation and a fundamental part of health care in the Eureka community for more than 20 years.

Debbie Allen, practice specialist at Rocky Mountain Heart & Lung, created a colorful donation box and started collecting funds for the teddy bear program.

Twelve-year-old Teslyn came down with a fever and body aches, which was no cause for alarm. The aches soon became quite painful. She missed a few days of school and then went back, only to come home feeling exhausted.

After a visit with their local pediatrician, Craig and Seisin Eyers of Missoula received a call about the lab results. Seisin described it as the worst phone call a parent could ever receive. “Something is really wrong,” she remembers the doctor’s office telling her. “You must take Teslyn to the emergency department right now.”

Once at their local hospital, the Eyers were told to drive to Kalispell immediately. They did exactly as they were instructed to do and soon they were headed north on Highway 93. Within hours they arrived at Kalispell Regional Medical Center (KRMC).

Once at KRMC, Craig and Seisin were told that Teslyn had acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML), a fast-growing form of cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

The pediatric team at Montana Children’s Specialists, a department of KRMC, knew they were finally ready to treat Teslyn in Kalispell. This would be the first time the team was prepared to care for any patient with AML. It takes a significant amount of resources including pediatric oncologists and

hematologists, hospitalists and nurses who are all certified to administer chemotherapy to care for a patient with Teslyn’s diagnosis for an extended hospital stay.

Fortunately, over the past several years, Kalispell Regional Healthcare has invested significantly to bring pediatric specialists to the Flathead Valley. Among the specialists are pediatric gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, sleep medicine specialists, surgeons, a cardiologist, and what Teslyn needed most, oncologists and hematologists.

The treatment regime for AML requires an inpatient chemotherapy infusion, which wipes out the patients red and white blood cells along with their platelets. It is what is required to fight AML and 95 percent of Teslyn’s bone marrow had cancerous cells.

Following the infusion, Teslyn needed to stay in the hospital for 30 days, until her blood tests demonstrated that she had recovered from the chemo induction. Red blood cells and platelets could be infused back into Teslyn but there is no replacing her white cells, so she was at risk of catching what might be life-threatening infections. Teslyn was placed in reverse isolation, which is designed to protect her from any pathogenic microorganisms while her immune system was impaired.

The Eyers were impressed with the professionalism and level of pediatric care that is now available in Kalispell.

“Whatever Kalispell has done here, they better not screw it up because our care has been awesome,” Seisin says, reflecting on all they have been through since January 30, 2019. “Everyone has been consistent, kind, and compassionate.”

Seisin describes their cancer journey as terrifying, monotonous, occasionally boring and raw, but she raves about staff, from the housekeepers to the pediatric hospitalists.

“Everyone has shown such a loving concern for Teslyn and that never fluctuates no matter how long their shifts are,” she says.

The staff and physicians who have been with Teslyn from her early diagnosis had this to say when asked to describe their beautiful and brave 12-year-old patient:

“Some people might let a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia bring them down and break their spirits. Such thoughts never occurred to Teslyn. After being diagnosed with AML in January of 2019, Teslyn has been through numerous rounds of chemotherapy, various surgical procedures, and several bone marrow biopsies at KRMC. Throughout all of this, Teslyn has never lost her infectious smile and overwhelming positive attitude.”

Teslyn has become known around the hospital as Teslyn “I got this” Eyers, because that was her first response when learning of her diagnosis. Her medical team loves to have dance parties and concerts with her, and everyone in the mailroom knows of Teslyn because she gets more deliveries than the rest of the hospital combined. According to her care team she is one very loved girl.

Teslyn has gone through three rounds of chemo at Montana Children’s and the cancerous cells in her bone marrow have dropped significantly but that was not good enough. It became apparent that Teslyn needed a bone marrow transplant.

One unexpected moment of gratitude and joy was the discovery that Collin, Teslyn’s younger brother, had turned out to be a perfect bone marrow match. Teslyn and her family left a few weeks ago, making their way to Colorado for a bone marrow transplant.

Montana Children’s was ready when Teslyn needed care on that day in January. The mission and vision of Montana Children’s is that the kind of complicated intensive cancer treatment Teslyn needed would be located in Montana so that she could remain near family.

“Everyone here – you have become part of our family,” says Seisin regarding their time at Montana Children’s. The thoughts of her caregivers at Montana Children’s are with the entire Eyer family as they continue Teslyn’s care in Colorado.

Kalispell Regional Healthcare’s new pediatric facility, Montana Children’s, opened its doors on July 1, 2019. The 190,000 square-foot facility, designed exclusively for children, is the only one of its kind in Montana and will have a significant impact on the health and well-being of children and their families throughout the state.

The first floor of Montana Children’s includes a 12-bed pediatric unit, a 6-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), an 18-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) (with 12 initial beds and 6 shelled for future growth) and dedicated spaces for family caregivers. With the largest group of pediatric specialists and unmatched services in the state, Montana Children’s is transforming pediatric care in Montana. This program makes Kalispell a health care destination, saving the lives and improving the health of children for

generations to come.

Volunteers deliver food to school childrenKRH Foundation Board members and employees continue to volunteer their time working with community partners. They have partnered with the Flathead Food Bank to deliver back packs full of food to designated schools.

The Food Bank fills up Ziploc bags full of food, to be delivered to identified children in 19 different schools. The bags are easily stored in their backpacks and provide food for children to eat over the weekend. Unfortunately neither the Food Bank nor the schools have the staff to pick up the food and make the deliveries.

When board members from the KRH Foundation realized that there was food sitting on shelves not making it to the schools for the kids, they went into action.

There are now eight volunteers who deliver more than 500 food packages a week to 18 schools in

the Flathead Valley. Some routes are once a month, some are twice a month and one of our volunteers completes his route weekly.

If you know of someone who would like to be a part of this community partnership to help identified children have food to eat over the weekends, we are always looking for volunteers. The routes usually take 90 to 120 minutes and there is no delivery schedule during the summer.

A.L.E.R.T. selected for 2019 Great Fish Community ChallengeA.L.E.R.T. has been selected as one of 53 local nonprofits to participate in the 5th Great Fish Community Challenge, a program of the Whitefish Community Foundation. A.L.E.R.T. Advisory Board Chair Bob Sandman is excited about this new collaboration and the opportunity for the board to interact with the community to share the story of the nation’s second oldest rural air ambulance. Contributions made on behalf of A.L.E.R.T. through the Whitefish Community Foundation between July 25 and September 13 will be eligible for matching funds. The first $13,950 will be used for advanced survival training for 5 pilots, 14 nurses and 10 medics for the extreme weather conditions of northwest Montana. Secondary use of funds will be specialized pilot training to maintain A.L.E.R.T.’s outstanding safety record.

Donations can also be made directly to the Whitefish Community Foundation accompanied by an official donor form. The donor forms will be sent to Flathead area households by the Whitefish Community Foundation prior to the event start date.

It was 12 years ago that Jane Winkley, a breast cancer survivor and longtime resident of the Flathead Valley, heard about women in rural Montana who had to drive more than 80 miles to have a mammogram and then waited months for the test results.

In Jane’s mind that just wasn’t right. Jane had developed a plan, or what some might call a vision, of how to bring breast care to rural Montana because “No woman should have to wait.”

In 2008 that vision became a reality when the Winkley Women’s Center coach began screening and diagnostic mammogram services for approximately 2,000 patients per

year, traveling to more than 10 different sites. In 11 years the Winkley coach has logged in more than 325,000 miles and completed approximately 21,000 mammograms detecting 160 cancers.

However, the 2D digital mammography equipment on the Winkley Women’s Center coach is no longer operational. It cannot be repaired, and the coach is no longer viable.

Renewing the vision of mobile mammography

The Save a Sister initiative is taking the lead in the fundraising efforts to purchase a new mobile mammography vehicle. The goal is to have a coach with the latest 3D technology along with a bone density scanner and ultrasound. The need is so great that there will be a temporary leased mammography coach that will travel to nine different sites in northwest and central Montana until we have a permanent replacement.

We believe “our sisters” in eastern Montana deserve the latest technology (3D) and we know that this is what Jane would want.

The Save a Sister mission is to lessen the impact of breast cancer in the community and this can’t be accomplished without a mobile mammography coach. Please consider joining this initiative and making a pledge.
