Summer 2019Programs Brochure
Thank you, friends and families, for supporting Saint Paul Urban Tennis. Your commitment to our organization gives thousands of young people across Saint Paul access to affordable programming year-round. Making high-quality youth programming accessible, both financially and geographically, is critical to developing our next generation of leaders.
My lived experience makes me a strong believer in SPUT’s motto, “Launching Leaders”. As I have developed into the leader I am today, I carry with me the impact of SPUT on my life. The core principles of “SPUT SPIRIT” guide me as I do my part to strengthen our community. When I started as a junior player, SPUT taught me the importance of Service, Perseverance, Integrity, Responsibility, Imagination, and Teamwork. Later SPUT would give me the opportunity to practice those principles as a coach. Now, I get to dream of where they can lead us as our Executive Director.
Each time I see our coaches working with kids, I am reminded of the special role SPUT played in my life. I firmly believe that our programs help youth become better players on the court, and leaders off the court. Thank you for supporting us in our efforts to empower and educate youth in our community.
See you on the courts!
Song ThaoExecutive Director
We strengthen our community by educating and empowering youth to realize their full potential
Since 1991 Saint Paul Urban Tennis has been known for the life and leadership skills we incorporate into our tennis programs. We now have opportunities for kids to develop skills in one or more of 4 SPUT Leadership Pathways:
Kids can start as Red Ballers and progress to Orange, Green, Teen or Junior Team Tennis. High school students can play winter tennis indoors and attend leadership training in our Warrior Leadership Academy. Players who stay active in SPUT programs can be hired as coaches, program assistants, and more. SPUT has many opportunities for kids to learn tennis and other skills to be successful on and off the court!

Mayor Melvin Carter“I grew up playing tennis on the courts at Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center under the tutelage of Ernie Greene and Saint Paul Urban Tennis. In those lessons, I learned valuable skills that helped me grow into the
leader I am today. Saint Paul Urban tennis is a special organization that contributes to our city’s wellbeing and prosperity.”
For 28 Years Saint Paul Urban Tennis has been developing youth and expanding the opportunities available to them. Here is a quick look at our history:
1991 - Saint Paul Urban Tennis is formed with support Northwest Tennis Patrons with the goal of expanding opportunities to play and learn tennis for youth in Saint Paul.
1992 - Ernie Greene, longtime community leader and avid tennis coach, merges his efforts with SPUT bringing an emphasis on character and service with him.
2010 - The United States Tennis Association (USTA) names Saint Paul Urban Tennis the Outstanding National Junior Tennis and Learning program in the nation.
2017 - SPUT moves to our new headquarters at Eastview Rec Center on the east side of Saint Paul giving us the opportunity to create a meaningful space for neighbors to gather, learn, and play.
