Restored by Design Introduction

Restored by Design is a local eco fashion business

founded in 2011 by designer, Martha Jackson. This unique eco

boutique is dedicated to the nurturing of handmade, one of a

kind boho chic style clothing, jewelry, accessories, and unique

works of art. RBD is a boutique and design studio specializing

in repurposing, reinventing, and up cycling preloved materials.

Inspired by past fashion eras, Martha pays homage to quality,

fabric, and detail in all of her designs. She believes in a more sustainable, ethical fashion

industry that respects the Earth, and the return to “Slow Fashion” not fast fashion. This

is echoed throughout her team of sample makers and interns.

The interactive retail studio gives a unique and inspiring shopping experience to

all who enter, which is rare to find these days. It offers the customer the opportunity to

purchase one of a kind, designer originals made in-house, as well as locally made pieces

that honor the art of creating by hand. It’s a must-go-to destination that you cannot

experience online. It engages and inspires clients with the brand, and rekindles their

creative spirit. The experience enlightens clients to

incorporate up cycled and re-invented clothing into their

wardrobes, cultivating a more conscious and responsible

consumer. This business model builds on practices for a

more sustainable future for generations to come.

Restored by Design also offers hands on classes in

basic & beyond basic sewing, repurposing workshops of all

sorts, special events, and private lessons that offer each

student an invigorating and transformative learning

experience.

We at Restored by Design are on a mission to cultivate

creative awareness in the community and restore our sense of

local value and eco fashion commerce, rekindling our

heritage.

Restored By Design Foundation Introduction A non-profit organization healing women through creativity.

Why does this matter?

Americans consume 20 billion tons of cheap fashion

and dump 10 million tons of used clothing into landfills

every year. The fashion industry is #2 polluter of our planet

second to the oil industry. The trend of consumerism has

created a fast fashion industry that employs 1 in 6 people on

the planet, exploiting men, women, and sometimes children

using unethical practices. Fair Trade organizations have

been working to change these practices in developing

countries for years. But the problem is slow to change unless we shift our own

individual fashion purchasing habits.

In our country, there is a sense of having lost our way due to stress,

strain, and lack of sustainable employment. We have an abundance of

talented and capable women who are living in poverty with little hope of

change. Restored by Design Foundation sees this situation and believe that we

must begin to work locally for change. We know there is a way!

The Restored by Design Foundation was established in January 2016, to

empower, support, and heal disadvantaged women through creativity, and education.

We provide classes and on the job training in sewing construction, design, business

practice, personal development and sustainable community building. We mentor the

exploration of the creative self and provide expertise and guidance, tools, and materials

in an inspiring facility.

Fashion is a powerful force for change and together we can change the world, one

stitch at a time. Hence the T collection was born in partnership with Restored by Design.

This collection uses up donated t-shirts, men’s shirts and fabric fragments in a unique

array of tote bags, tops, and dresses made by the Foundation’s “Maker’s Team”.

Page 6: Summer 2016 Pr sKit - files.ctctcdn.comfiles.ctctcdn.com/c8cdc3e5001/2705825a-ac6d-43e3-83bf-8f5f94c76… · in repurposing, reinventing, and up cycling preloved materials. Inspired

Funds raised for the foundation are used to start the healing journey for the

women who enter the fold by offering scholarships for classes to learn how to sew. The

women who wish to continue then become apprentices, members of the “Maker’s Team”

continuing to learn through on the job training, creating clothing and accessories for the

T Collection. In partnership with RBD, the pieces are sold in the eco boutique and

online. Proceeds from these sales go back to the Foundation, ultimately creating

meaningful jobs. This revitalizes the hearts and souls of these women thus healing them

with a renewed sense of value and empowerment.

Meet Angela

1st Member of the Maker’s Team for the Foundation

Meet Angela, the first member of the foundation’s creative team! She has been touched by angels for certain! Angela was born premature at a tiny 1 1/2 pounds and has been holding herself strong ever since, she has a golden heart and spirit! Her mother tells me since age 6, she wanted to be a fashion designer. However, at age 8, she developed chronic kidney disease, making her sick for most of her teenage years, at 15 years old she started hemodialysis, in and out of

school, until her first kidney transplant at 18, she almost lost her life. If this wasn’t enough she endured a second transplant that has now proven to be successful, she believes she was saved by God. This has affected her life’s journey by severely limiting her abilities to work, and hence her opportunities to pursue her dream! Martha first met her when she took sewing classes at Restored by Design and was touched by her story, deciding to make her the first member since she has been so disadvantaged by her experiences. She is now learning more sewing techniques and is eagerly creating pieces you now see as part of the T Collection. Angela has been a member of the Maker’s team for the past two months. Since her first day she has been able to finally make her dreams come true. With designing T-dresses, tote bags, and Maker’s Aprons under the guidance of Martha, Angela believes that this is a great way to keep a clear mind and focus on what she wants for the future. She wants to achieve the goals of becoming an inspiring fashion designer. As a mentor to Angela, Martha has influenced her to open up her mind to new opportunities in which she never thought she would reach. With her new skill set, Angela wants to galvanize others, letting them know that life can be tough, you should never give up on your dreams, believe, and you can achieve them, with a lot of faith.
