RANCH After-School Program wins Prestigious

“Award of Excellence in Environmental Stewardship”

from California Park & Recreation Society (CPRS)!The Ranch After-School Program is a collaboration between the OC Fair & Event Center, the City of Costa Mesa, and the Newport-Mesa Unifi ed School District. This program, which was developed in 2002 and piloted in 2003, aids in providing a unique after school experience in which students learn the agricultural concepts of gardening, livestock care, and leather working. Each student participates through the hands-on experience of caring for animals on the farm which include: chickens, sheep, pigs, goats, llamas, cattle, and horses. Participants learn responsible animal care by cleaning stalls, grooming, and exercising the animals. Additionally, the farm dedicates land for each student to create and maintain an individual garden plot. Students’ gardening responsibilities include planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding, inspecting for pests, and harvesting their plot. Agricultural education helps children learn about healthy food choices and teaches them diff erent ways to access fresh fruits and vegetables. Most importantly, students begin to understand the deep impact agriculture has in their lives.

The program operates annually from the early fall through early spring for children in grades 4th – 6th that are selected by their schools to participate. Involvement is limited to 90 students and is free to Costa Mesa residents. Attendance in this program has grown steadily, with our latest session reaching capacity.

The California Park & Recreation Society evaluated the Ranch After School Program on criteria such as the challenges the program faced, the resourcefulness in overcoming those challenges, and the execution, accomplishments, and mission of the program. This program is one of only seven programs in the state of California that received an award for creating community through meaningful and innovative programming.

For more information on participating in this exciting program, please call: 714-708-1644

Wetlands1298 Victoria St., | Costa Mesa | 7 a.m. – Sunset

An Orange County park open year round, the Talbert Nature Preserve has nearly 2,000 acres of scenic landscape, perfect for Costa Mesa locals and visitors that want to get outside. A great spot for hiking, biking, jogging or even just walking the dog (yes, the preserve is dog friendly!), the preserve acts as a botanical garden, wildlife refuge and exceptional recreational facility all at once. Picnic tables at the end of the base of a trail from Fairview Park is where you’ll likely fi nd Costa Mesa locals spending time on the weekends.

Talbert Nature Preserve is located on Victoria Street in Costa Mesa between Pacifi c Avenue and the Santa Ana River. The Talbert Nature Preserve is divided into two sections; the North Talbert Preserve is roughly 91.5 acres and the South Talbert Preserve is approximately 88.5 acres.

With nine diff erent trails stretching over nearly 3 miles (6 miles round trip); the Talbert Nature Preserve is one of few open space areas left in Central Orange County. With only 100 feet in elevation, the Talbert’s trails are great for beginner hikers or families with younger children. Hikers can continue through the Nature Center to reach the Santa Ana River Bicycle Trail, which continues on to the Pacifi c Ocean and nearby Newport Beach. Wildlife in the preserve consists mostly of birds, including great, snowy egrets and mallard ducks. You might also see small animals like squirrels and rabbits – and beware of coyote visits at night.

Costa Mesa Skate Park900 Arlington Drive | Costa Mesa | (714) 754-5300

Skateboarders and in-line skaters can enjoy the park seven days a week year around from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (closed Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for maintenance).
