A Few Words From Rich

Back From a Sitka, AK Fishing Trip

Mid-June for me means a fishing adventure with old friends Nick and Tim. Nick owns a 1974 26' Tollycraft

in Sitka. Over 8 or so years, we have put an old boat into dependable operating condition, and a comfortable place to stay for 3 fishing buddies. Now we are enjoying the fruits of our labor (and Nick's money) by spendingmore fishing time.

This year the weather cooperated, and we were able to get offshore more than a few days for halibut fishing. On three of those days, we all limited with two halibut each. My largest was 70+ lbs. I also caught a very nice 30 lb. king salmon. This all resulted in 75 lbs. of professionally frozen, vacuum-

E-Board: What We're Talking About Now

Meeting of June 20th

We met at the Mandarin Kitchen in Des Moines, a few folks for dinner at 6 p.m., and more joined us for the meeting at 7:00 pm.

A quick note: the E-Board meets on the third Thursday of the month, customarily at the Mandarin Kitchen. All Poverty Bay members are welcome to join us! Let me know if you can make it. That being said, no meetings of the E-Board are scheduled for July and August.

Executive Officer and Administrative Officer

Executive Officer Jerry Carbaugh and Administrative Officer Don Parker were excused from the meeting. I explained that Jerry is entertaining family friends from Taiwan on a commercial cruise to Alaska. Don is cruising local waters, and will be at the D-16 Rendezvous in Poulsbo and the Poverty Bay Rendezvous at Brownsville. Being on the water is what it's all about!

Nautical Auction

Our squadron surpassed its goal on this one (over $3,400 raised)! Congratulations to all who participated! Thank you to all who donated items, solicited donors, and purchased the "booty." Special thanks to everyone who helped: Gray Cunningham, Steve Archer, Joanna Webster, Gloria Hunt, and everyone else who pitched in!

In addition to thanking all of our squadron members, the E-Board noted the importance of thanking all of our vendors and donors. A card or note, and a special mention when you see them is in order.

AED Training Update

While I was not personally in attendance, several of our E-Board members participated in the recent training. They said that we had about 18 squadron members take part. In addition, they praised the work of Mary Myers who presented the training. Congratulations, Mary, on your preparation, and educational leadership to make this training session a success! Now our squadron is much better prepared for the unexpected.

Alzheimer's Walk in Tacoma and Rendezvous

Mark your calendars for Saturday, Sept. 14. The E-Board decided that we will support the Alzheimer's Foundation by having a boat parade show of support as walk participants march the waterfront for this worthy cause. Chuck and Jolene Laguna put this forward as an idea for us to consider, and we like it.

But wait... there's more! Terry Scott "kicked it up a notch" in that we could have a squadronrendezvous at Dock Street that weekend. Likewise, that idea was approved. Further, perhaps Tacoma Sail and Power Squadron would like to join us. Terry is in the process of checking with them.

All that's required for now is to mark the weekend on your calendar. More information will be forthcoming.

Steak Fry

Mark your calendars again! Our annual Steak Fry will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7th. John and Cindy McKay have again graciously agreed to open up their beautiful home for us to enjoy the view along with our camaraderie. Don Parker, our Administrative Officer, has assured the E-Board that planning for the event has been underway, and that details are being implemented. He will be in touch with all of us with more information as the summerprogresses.

By the way, if you haven't yet enjoyed a Steak Fry at John and Cindy's place, this is the view that you have been missing:

Calendar on the Website

Terry Scott has been working his way through adding a calendar of our events to our website. The E-Board heard about some of the challenges, but Terry has persevered, and it seems to be working to our benefit. Thank you, Terry! And he adds, if you have any comments or suggestions, be in touch.

Des Moines Area Container Ship Wakes

The E-Board was alerted to what could be a serious problem in our area: huge wakes from container ships as they make the turn at the yellow buoy near Des Moines as they leave Puget Sound. More needs to be discussed about this issue and how to proceed. This could be an item for cooperation with the Des Moines Yacht Club. More to come...

Holiday Gift Exchange E-Board Trial

The E-Board is contemplating a Holiday Gift Exchange at our Squadron December meeting. (This would be in addition to our Des Moines Food Bank support.) However, before undertaking such a venture, as attractive as a member gift exchange may seem, we need to be sure that such an activity can be implemented. Accordingly, the E-Board will test the basic concept at our October E-Board meeting. The intent is that, as a representation of members, the E-Board will be able to determine, first, if the concept is workable, and then, what improvements can be made to the basic concept. Suffice to say, we want our December meeting to be enjoyable!

Congratulations to our Pirates Log Editor

The E-Board recognized the work of Marcus Nelson, and assistance from Kara Dalkey, for the outstanding recent Logs. Well done, Marc, in spite of the demands of a new job!

Next Rendezvous: Brownsville

Shirley and I will not be there on the 4th of July, but plan to join the group on the 5th. We'll be visiting old friends on Vashon Island on the 4th, and enjoying the fireworks show atQuartermaster Harbor.

My best for a great summer,

Rich

Getting a Charge out of Batteries!

I decided to check water levels in my batteries today as my wife was cleaning windows and blinds and it looked like I was enjoying life too much on the couch. I normally do this about every four months and the levels aren’t down a lot. As most men like tproject after they have done it instead of before, I fit right in and found some interesting information that I’ll pass on. First off, hydrogen gas from batteries is explosive (so no sparks) and the acid can do some bodily damage to eyes anwhich I have ruined a few. Now you want to fill with water (distilled is best or tap water is ok if it is clear and not highly chlorinated) up to the inside hole of the plastic liner. If water is low and the loss is even in each cell then battery charger or alternator voltage may be too high and if only low in one cell that indicates weak or shorted cell. A fully charged battery specific gravity is 1.245 to 1.3 in each cell and when it is partially discharged it should nvary more than .050 from the other cells. If the battery isn’t being used and hasn’t received a charge for at least 12 hours, the battery voltage should be 12.1 to 12.8 volts. Avoid discharging your deep cycle batteries below 50%, which is 12.1 to 12.keep your batteries in a battery box with cover that you can get to easily for maintenance. Keep top surfaces clean and dry, cables in good condition, check for broken or corroded strands with only one cable to a terminal. So avoid and run them to the negative bus bar with a switch to control the power. Terry Scott recently found out that the sealed batteries are much easier to maintain and one less thing to worry about while boating.

See you at Brownville!

“If Your Boat Sinks …. It Will Probably Be at Your Moorage”

After several boats on Commencement Bay sank in their slips last month, I tried to collect data as to how common this was and what the major causes were. While I found that no agency collects all this data, several insurance companies report that boats sink at their own moorage on a 4:1 ratio compared to being under way. And sinking is the #1 cause for major insurance claims according to BoatUS. While looking for a list of the major causes of sinkings, I stumbled on a fantastic article (and website) written by Marine Surveyor David Pascoe. The article is worth a read. If you think your boat is not at risk – you’re wrong. But a few minutes time following his heads-up inspection might make you sleep better … or not. Take a look at http://www.yachtsurvey.com/sinking.htm

On that note, see you on the water,

Dave

Most people know that the local Power Squadron teaches safe boating, and we’re a great go-to source for helping you get your WA State Boater’s Card, but those who dig deeper make a very rewarding discovery! Not only do our Certified Instructors make learning fun, we also have informative and entertaining monthly events and then we have loads of fun at our 6 or 7 Boating Rendezvous weekends from April to October! You’ll have 30+ of the friendliest boaters to mingle with at our Rendezvous at some great destinations around Puget Sound. You will have such a relaxing and fun time that you’ll be sharing weekend boating stories with family, friends, co-workers, and others for weeks afterward. Here’s just part of what we have to offer:

Educational Classes (partial list on pages 14-15) – learn how to protect your family and friends out on the water, get your WA State Boater Card, become a more confident boater, and learn how to read weather conditions before heading out.

Boating Rendezvous (see page 2) – Reduce docking stress as our members help you with docking at all our Rendezvous. We will guide you in on VHF Channel 68, and several experienced boaters will help you get tied up to the dock.

Monthly Dinner Meetings - come and mingle, enjoy social hour, good food, a great speaker on boater interest topics, or other special events. Bring your questions and we’ll try to answer them. See our updated 12 months Dinner Meeting Planner on page 16 in this issue of our Pirates Log.

Host a Rendezvous – Want to speed through the newbie feeling? Ask to be pairedup with one or two couples to Host a Rendezvous over an upcoming weekend (seeRendezvous Schedule) and you’ll very quickly become acquainted with a number of members, names, faces, boats, who’s on first, what’s on second (oops )… hang out with fellow boaters and ask all the boating questions you want. We were all new at one time.

How Many Lives does THIS Cat Have?

By Ray Valpey

I heard a bump in the night. I’m a light sleeper, especially when we’re at anchor. It sounded like our tethered hard dingy bumping against the hull, next to my ear. “Is someone trying to steal the dingy?” I wondered. So up the companionway I go. Not a soul around. It was dark. In the middle of Montague Harbor. Maybe 100 yards from shore.

Oh, but where’s the cat, Nike? No cat to be found on deck. Or in the cabin. Nike was named after the slogan “Just do it”. Maybe she had jumped into the dingy on her nightly stroll. She hadn’t taken Physics 101 and missed the leap back to the mother ship. Who knows? The bay was full of harbor seals. Nike was probably a furry breakfast. Very sad.

After daybreak, we carefully cruised and scanned the shore. No Nike. Very, very sad. We mourned. We had a quiet ceremony – a wake - as we left our boat’s wake and our cat’s remains behind in this bay on Galiano Island in the Canadian Gulf Islands.

For years, Debra had been urging me to allow her to get a dog. “OK, go ahead and get a dog” says I.

A month or so goes by. The phone rings. “Are you missing a cat? She’s been hanging around here at our French restaurant on Galliano Island”. So, she had swam ashore in the dark. Her collar was still in place and she had gotten hungry enough to allow strange humans close enough to read the tag. We had already mourned her loss. We figured “If she prefers to roam, let’s allow her rescuers to keep the cat”.

Long story short: it didn’t work out with her new humans and a few weeks later, Debra drove up to Galiano Island via the Tsawwassen ferry to retrieve a thin, weather-worn, grateful furry feline who came home to a new quadriped in the house, a little dog named Chloe. Nike and Chloe were soon to become friends.

That was 11 years ago. This story reflects only ONE of Nike’s lives. I could tell you of her other lives, (and Debra could tell you of her travails in the retrieval) but we’ll save more stories for a happy hour some day.

We also own a little boat and I’m like a kid with it. I take off early in the morning, fishing rod in tow, and just drift about the ocean all day.
