Dear Mater Dei Family

As I write this letter for the summer edition of the Scarlet amp Gray magazine I look back with tremendous pride and gratitude for the graduating Class of 2010 I congratulate and salute ASB President Sam Digiovanni for his outstanding leadership during this school year and Valedictorian Matthew Bernard and for his inspirational words to the graduates at the UCI Bren Center at this yearrsquos wonderful graduation ceremony on May 29 2010 My most sincere commendations and congratulations as well to Salutatorian Paula Verkuylen for her incredible graduation speech to Senior Class President Kate Johnson for her yearlong inspiring leadership and to the entire graduating Class of 2010 for the incredible imprint they left on the treasured history of Mater Dei High School

The Class of 2010 in true Mater Dei spirit committed themselves to over 92000 hours of community outreach service to those in need in our local community during their four years here at MDHS (with 28 seniors graduating with more than 400 hours of service to the needy in our society) In addition many Mater Dei students and teachers spent their Easter vacations to travel to New Orleans to continue the amazing outreach of the MDHS family in the ongoing efforts to help rebuild homes of those in the region still attempting to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina As the 2009-2010 school year concluded the Mater Dei High School community was dazzled with the incredible display of theatrical vocal and comedic talent in the Senior Musical production of My Fair

Lady marveled at the depth and quality of the scholarships awards and accolades bestowed upon the Class of 2010 at the Senior Awards celebration moved by the reverence and emotion of a beautiful Baccalaureate Mass celebration and reveled in the pure fun and excitement of Grad Night at the ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney

The cover story of this summer 2010 edition of the Scarlet amp Gray magazine is dedicated to our beloved Mater Dei High School caretaker Josef DrsquoHeygers who passed away in April after dedicating almost 60 years of tireless faithful caring and loving service to MDHS During this summer we are in the process of building a beautiful display case in honor of Josef in the area just outside of the MD Counseling and Career Center in the Academic Services building which Josefrsquos amazing legacy gift so generously funded In addition we are creating a tree and garden shrine in Josefrsquos memory in the Grotto near the ceramics room opposite room 609 When you are back on campus for any occasion we encourage you to visit either or both of these shrines in remembrance of an incredibly humble honest hard-working and dedicated man who loved Mater Dei High School with his entire body mind heart and soul May our beloved Josef rest in peace with our Lord Jesus Christ in paradise

As we prepare to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Mater Dei High School we are reminded that the most important aspect of our school the holistic growth and development of our students remains first and foremost in the minds of the faculty staff and administration here at MDHS To that end we sincerely thank and commend Bishop Tod D Brown who continues to generously provide so many families with financial aid each year allowing those who otherwise could not afford to do so the opportunity to receive an outstanding Catholic college preparatory education This past year we provided our families with over $15 million in financial aid with that number increasing to $2 million for next school year as we help our families work through these difficult economic times We are also grateful to so many generous parents alumni past parents and friends of Mater Dei for their ongoing generosity in supplementing our Bishoprsquos support through their foundation memorial and alumni gift grants as well as their legacy gifts to the Monarch Legacy Endowment Fund We are blessed to have so many who care so deeply to help carry on the legacy of a Catholic school that is truly open and welcoming to a diverse population of students and families

No matter how much the buildings and landscape may change at the corner of Bristol and Edinger in Santa Ana California the founding spirit of Honor Glory and Love at Mater Dei will never change It does not matter whether you are an alum of 60 years or a new incoming freshman you are always welcomed and embraced as a member of the Mater Dei family As we say goodbye and Godspeed to the Class of 2010 and welcome in the Class of 2014 we ask Our Lord God to bless guide and protect the entire Mater Dei family throughout the summer of 2010

Mater Deirsquos 2010 Special Games marked the 25th anniversary of the annual outreach program On Saturday April 17 2010 approximately 250 athletes with special needs throughout Orange County gathered at Mater Deirsquos Outdoor Athletics Complex to take part in Special Games Outreach The athletes who range in age from four to

70 are treated to a fun-filled day of activites including track and field games miniature golf sponge throw face painting and a visit with the ASPCA Therapy Dogs More than 450 Mater Dei student and parent volunteers run the annual outreach program

While our students are offered the opportunity to gain many valuable life perspectives by volunteering their time as buddies and team leaders the athletes return with great excitement year after year making Special Games Outreach a true Mater Dei tradition The athletes participate in an Opening Ceremony accompanied by the Mater Dei High School Marching Band and 450 cheering student volunteers

Head Football Coach Bruce Rollinson who serves as Track Coordinator has been involved in the event since its inception ldquoSpecial Games Outreach is an opportunity for me to encourage our students to become involved in community servicerdquo

Head Basketball Coach Gary McKnight Head Girls Basketball Coach Kevin Kiernan and President Patrick Murphy also have been involved in Special Games for numerous years The event is supported by many dedicated parents and faculty most notably Mary Crowley who is the parent of six MD alumni

MATER DEI SPECIAL GAMES 25th ANNIVERSARY

When Josef DrsquoHeygers arrived in the United States in 1956 from Belgium he had no idea that the job he took at Mater Dei High School as the school janitor would lead to a lifetime of friendships and family

On April 12 2010 the Mater Dei family came together to say goodbye to Josef and celebrate his life and legacy at a memorial Mass presided by Fr Steve Sallot rsquo72 in the Meruelo Athletic Center Hundreds were in attendance including current and former Mater Dei faculty alumni students and friends of Mater Dei

President Patrick Murphy and Ned Moeller shared words and memories with those in attendance about our beloved Josef Members of ASB served as altar servers Eucharistic ministers greeters and an honor guard for the final procession for Josef to his final resting place

Josef was 41 years old when he arrived at Mater Dei in 1956 and had worked as a shoemaker for more than two decades An old friend from Belgium was working as a janitor at MD and had written him about an opening for another janitor

Though he spoke no English when he first arrived Josef quickly became an icon in the Mater Dei family For many years his work day began at 430 am when he got up to unlock the main gate to let the bakery truck in It ended at night when he checked the locks on the doors and made sure all the lights had been turned off In between hersquod clean replace light bulbs do general maintenance and run the nuns back and forth from the convent to Mater Deirsquos campus For decades Josef attended daily Mass in the campus chapel and could often be found standing in front of the statue of Mary

Even when his eyes went dim and his hands shook with age Josef still went through the halls at night checking locks and turning out lights ndash putting the school to bed before he turned in himself

Mater Dei means ldquoeverything to merdquo he once said

In the late 1990s when the redevelopment plans for Mater Deirsquos campus were being finalized Josef made one of the largest gifts in school history

ldquoJosef blew us away with the gift he made to us at that meeting After we recovered from our shock and amazement at the generosity of Josefrsquos gift Fr Steve and I discussed a way that we could best honor him After much discussion we decided to put Josefrsquos name on the clock tower above the Academic Services Center which is visible from the window of Josefrsquos apartmentrdquo said Patrick Murphy Mater Dei President

Josef said ldquoI am so happy and so grateful to see my name up there Every morning when I wake up I

see my name there and people will know that Josef the shoemaker has done something special and important to help the childrenrdquo

The Josef A DrsquoHeygers Academic Services Center is a constant reminder that Josef the shoemaker from Belgium was here and did something special for the children

Thank you Josef for your great care of the Mater Dei campus and family Though you have gone home to the peaceful loving arms of our Lord your memory will live in our hearts forever We find consolation in knowing that you will continue to watch over us from heaven Your name your spirit and your love will remain at Mater Dei forever

Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of OrangeGreg Dhuyvetter lsquo77 has accepted Bishop Tod Brownrsquos invitation to become the fifth Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Orange Greg began his new position at Marywood on March 8 2010

Greg was at Mater Dei High School for close to 28 years in the positions of English Teacher Chair of the English Department Assistant PrincipalFaculty Services and Assistant PrincipalAcademic Services In all of these positions Greg established a tradition of excellence in education through his dedication and commitment as reflected in his competence his sense of humor his creativity his keen mind and the many programs he has initiated developed and directed

For all that Greg is and for all that he has given to MDHS we are most grateful thankful and appreciative As Greg moves forward to this new position we wish him every blessing and success knowing that his vision and leadership will take education in the schools of the Diocese of Orange to even greater levels of excellence

Anna-Lisa has served as Chair of the English Department WCEA-WASC Self-Study Co-Chair Coach of the Academic Decathlon Team and has supported Mater Dei High School through her leadership and participation in numerous committees over the course of her 15 years here

Father of the YearBruce Rollinson rsquo67 Head Football Coach was selected by the Fatherrsquos Day Council Orange County as a 2010 Father of the Year He was honored at a tribute dinner held on Thursday June 17 at the Grove of Anaheim

The Fatherrsquos Day Council is a group of leading members of the manufacturing retail and media communications arenas which annually selects and honors individuals whose achievements and values as fathers are exemplary

ldquoOf all the awards I have received over the years being honored as an outstanding father without a doubt fills me with the most priderdquo Rollinson said ldquoIt recognizes how much my family contribute to help me I just count my blessingsrdquo

Coach Rollinson attended the dinner with his wife Laurie and daughters Caroline lsquo05 and Catherine lsquo09 Laurie arranged to have nearly 20 former Mater Dei football players attend the banquet to support their coach who has had a major impact on their lives beyond high school football They credit ldquoRollordquo for teaching them morals ethics and character ndash for teaching them how to be men

The proceeds from the tribute dinner benefited the American Diabetes Association an organization dedicated to funding research to find a cure for diabetes During the past 20 years the Fatherrsquos Day Council has raised more than $25 million to fight diabetes The entire Mater Dei community congratulates you Coach Rollinson for being named ldquoFather of the Yearrdquo

Cory Hahn whose outstanding performance throughout the 2010 season lead MD baseball to a CIF title was named OC Register Player of the Year and Cal-Hi Sports Mr Baseball Player of the Year (the first MD selection on the all-time list dating back to the 1899 selection) along with many other accolades Hahn was also selected in the Major League Baseball draft

Girls basketballrsquos Kaleena Mosqueda Lewis was named ESPN Player of the Year She was also named to the Parade All-American team with teammate Jordan Adams

Another MD Football standout and UCLA signee Chris Ward received numerous accolades including Trinity League most valuable lineman and selections to the Los Angeles Times All-Star Parade All-American and EA Sports All-American teams

Monarchs Compete on USA Junior National TeamsKaleena Mosqueda-Lewis University of Connecticut commit Jordan Adams and Alexyz Vaioletama USC commit were selected to the 2010 USA Womenrsquos U17 World Championship Team for the second year The team won gold in the final game against France on July 25 2010 Vaioletama was unable to compete due to an injury

Amber Freeman All-California Softball Team selection and Arizona State commit was named to the USA Softball Junior Womenrsquos National Team

Bret Bonnani made the USA Menrsquos Junior National Team This summer the team defeated Australia France and Germany Bret scored six goals in the match against Australia

Girlsrsquo basketball coach Kevin Kiernan led his team to a 32-1 record and was named USA Todayrsquos All-USA Coach of the Year

Coach Burt Call was named CIF Division I Coach of the Year after leading his team to an incredible season and CIF Southern Section title

BASEBALL WINS CIF-SS DIVISION 1BEATS DANA HILLS 2-0CORY HAHN amp TY MOORE PITCH A PERFECT GAME

Congratulations to our Monarch Baseball team for capturing the 2010 CIF-SS Division 1 title against Dana Hills This is the third CIF baseball championship for the Monarchs (1980 amp 2005) and the first perfect game in school history

Cory Hahn a senior pitched a perfect game for five innings and then was replaced by Ty Moore a sophomore who also pitched two perfect innings in the game Hahn not only pitched a perfect game he hit a 430 foot home run out of the park made an over-the-shoulder running catch in center field which gave him the honor of defensive play of the game

The game remained 0-0 until the Monarchs scored in the second inning The count was at two outs and senior Konnor Armijo walked Senior Jacob Medina hit a high fly ball to left field for a triple that drove in Armijo It remained 1-0 until Hahnrsquos homerun in the sixth inning The Monarchs finished the season 21-10 For more on Monarch Baseball please visit wwwmaterdeiorgbaseball

MATER DEI CIF PLAYER OF THE YEARJERSEYS RETIRED

Mr Patrick Williams has been named the Director of Performing Arts and Musical Theatre Mr Williams has been instrumental in the growth of the theatre arts program since he began teaching at Mater Dei in 2003 Over the last seven years he has successfully directed a number of performances and expanded student interest and participation in theatre arts by starting new programs

such as Shortsfest Scriptsfest the Improv Club and Shakespeare in the Grotto

In June the theatre arts department celebrated the 5th anniversary of Shakespeare in the Grotto an ambitious and wildly creative outdoor staged performance and art festival The event has become an annual tradition which brings a growing audience of Mater Dei families alumni and community members to our campus Much has been accomplished through Shakespeare in the Grotto which is a

compilation of efforts by teachers parents and more than 100 students to create what Williams describes as ldquoShakespeare set in Van Gogh Landrdquo Students are revitalizing Shakespeare in high school theatre arts and learning the commitment cooperation and hard work it takes to pull off the challenging genre The Mater Dei community has discovered an innovative way for various departments to come together to enhance studentsrsquo educational experience

Patrick Williams has also created an exciting opportunity for Mater Dei students to take theatre into the community In celebration of Read Across America Day theatre arts students visited neighboring Sepulveda Elementary School for a special theatrical production of Dr Seuss inspired stories Approximately 200 students from pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes were treated to a 30-minute multimedia presentation that combined theatre comedy music and a big screen presentation to bring some of the best known Dr Seuss stories to life The purpose of turning the stories into a theatrical production was to challenge elementary school kids to stretch their imagination beyond the page to make reading exciting

TWO MONARCHS SELECTED AS 2010 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP FINALISTS

Congratulations to Amy Dominguez and Jacob Pellegrini Class of 2010 for being named Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation

National Merit Finalists are selected from the top 1 percent of high school students in the nation based on high SAT scores outstanding academic records throughout high school leadership in school and community activities and recommendations by their high school principals

Amy Dominguez graduated with a 476 grade point average and will attend Yale University majoring in International Relations She was named Mater Deirsquos 2010 Young Woman of the Year and received the Alumni Association Senior Award An athlete as well as a scholar Amy has participated in soccer cross country and track She completed 656 service hours over her four year as a Mater Dei student through her involvement in Urban Compass Girl Scouts and Camp ReCreation among other service programs

Jacob Pelligrini graduated with a 455 grade point average and will attend Notre Dame University majoring in science or math His brother Nick lsquo09 is also attending Notre Dame Jacob completed 295 service hours volunteering for Special Games and Urban Compass as well as other outreach programs He was named Mater Deirsquos 2010 Catholic Young Man of the Year He achieved Eagle Scout rank in the Boys Scouts and was a member of the Mater Dei marching band

SENIOR AWARDSOn May 17 2010 with several hundred senior students and parents in the audience many of our Class of 2010 were honored in a variety of ways Over 150 seniors were recognized as a result of their membership in CSF andor NHS Sixty-five seniors with a 40 or higher grade point average (GPA) were awarded plaques and the four students with the highest GPA were given a special award Many seniors were given a plaque andor a monetary award through Mater Deirsquos annual and memorial scholarships Outstanding students in the various academic disciplines received a special plaque and journalism students came to the stage to receive their awards Our Student Body Officers and the Senior Class Officers received pen sets and those who served as commissioners were asked to stand and be recognized Students who had surpassed 400 hours of community service were given a special plaque From the list of those individuals who were selected as Student of the Month throughout the year came the announcement of Mater Deirsquos Young Man and Woman of the Year Sam Digiovanni and Amy Dominguez These coveted awards were followed by the announcement of the Catholic Man and Woman of the Year Jacob Pellegrini and Karen Billeci the Salutatorian Paula Verkuylen and the Valedictorian Matthew Bernard Woven throughout the evening were pictures of most of the seniors accompanied by the name of scholarships andor awards each had received and the college each would attend This wonderful addition to the evening was a result of the efforts and technological expertise of Mr Dhuyvetter We thank all who had a part in putting together this wonderful event

WALK WITH HOPE - WALKING TO BUILD AWARENESS amp PREVENTIONIN MEMORY OF BRI MATTHEWS lsquo12

Mater Deirsquos participation in the With Hope Foundation Annual Walk With Hope in Memory of Bri Matthews lsquo12 was coordinated through the efforts of Tracy Chu lsquo13 and Sara Cooper lsquo13 On May 22 members of the Mater Dei Softball team and Song team students faculty and parents joined Brirsquos family and formed the largest team at the walk Brirsquos favorite color was turquoise Her teammates wore t-shirts designed in her honor her family wore turquoise shirts and every walker wore a turquois ribbon Annette Craig founder of the Amber Craig Memorial Foundation named in honor of her daughter spoke to Mater Dei faculty parents and students after we tragically lost Bri this past February The goal of this organization is to support local high schoolsrsquo efforts in suicide prevention through education at no cost to the schools for speakers and materials to effectively educate our communityrsquos youth For more information on With Hope please visit their website at wwwwithhopefoundationorg

HEARTS amp HOPE FOR HAITI - CAMPUS MINISTRY

During the Lenten Season the Mater Dei community responded to the devastation in Haiti and continued in its outreach to our community here in Santa Ana through various projects The outreach was launched at the Ash Wednesday Mass Students faculty and staff were touched by a slide show that featured images of the disaster in Haiti Click VIEW SLIDE SHOW to see what inspired our community to give to Hearts and Hope for Haiti

On Sunday February 21 the Joshua Christopher Salon held Haircuts for Haiti and donated all proceeds to the Association of Peasants Fondwa Many members of the MD family enjoyed a new haircut while helping the cause to raise nearly $3000 that day

Faculty staff and students purchased bracelets on campus to wear on special days with jeans and various collection days were held during Lent The MD family raised over $5000 during the Lenten Season for Hearts and Hope for Haiti All donations were sent to Allison DePasquale lsquo05 who is currently teaching at the University of Fondwa in Haiti and working round the clock to aid the Haitian people

The MD community also continued its outreach to Santa Ana during the Lenten Season Through the efforts of Campus Ministry canned goods were collected through a class competition benefitting the Second Harvest Food Bank The National Honor Society organized a shoe drive for children of a local homeless intervention shelter To find out more about the Mater Dei Campus Ministry program visit them online at wwwmaterdeiorgcampusministry

Matt Cwiertny brother to Christine lsquo86 Eric lsquo87 Scott lsquo94 and David lsquo96 died this past October of NK T-cell Lymphoma and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis He was only 24 and was a Mater Dei graduate of the class of 2003 This year Mattrsquos family and friends are working to raise $60000 for the Leukemia amp Lymphoma Society through the September 19 Light the Night Walk at Angel Stadium If Mattrsquos family and friends can raise that amount a research grant will be named in Mattrsquos memory and the funds directed to a researcher conducting research for cures aimed at rare and aggressive lymphomas such as what Matt had

HELP FOR HAITI - ALLISON DEPASQUALE AND MEGAN DELGLEIZE

Allison DePasquale lsquo05 was living and working in Fondwa Haiti as Development Director for Association of Peasants Fondwa at University of Fondwa when the earthquake hit the island this past January In her immediate area they experienced mass devestation the schools orphanage clinic and radio station as well as all infrastructure was completely gone They lost 25 people including a nun Sister Odile Damus whom Allison worked with and a two year old orphan named Jude Dubic who was often perched on Allisonrsquos lap when she would Skype with her family Allison remains in Haiti in the city of Les Cayes where she continues to work at a clinic helping many people that arrived from Port-au-Prince If you would like to contact Allison please email her at aadepasqualegmailcom

TEAM ELLA - RUNNING THE OC MARATHON - CYSTIC FIBROSIS

Katie (Stremick) Horwichrsquos lsquo93 young daughter Ella is battling Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Katiersquos brother Nick Stremick lsquo97 ran the OC Marathon on May 2 for the fourth year in a row to raise money for CF in honor of his niece and goddaughter Ella He started doing this right after Ella was diagnosed at 15 months with CF and raised over $110000 the first year This year he raised $37000 to add to fining a cure

There has been so much progress made recently in the fight against CF There are several new medications coming down the pipeline that will

On Saturday April 10 2010 the Mater Dei Lettermenrsquos Club hosted one of its regular quarterly meetings at the El Torito Restaurant in Santa Ana The Club formed by former letter winners gathers together on a regular basis to keep that bond of friendship alive that in some cases has been for more than 50 years Other than the Clubrsquos social functions it points with pride to their Athletic Grant Program which in the past five years has donated more the $33000 in need-based grants to current Mater Dei athletes

The guest speaker for the April meeting was Mater Dei Head Basketball Coach Gary McKnight who holds the unique distinction of winning 844 games since 1982 making him the most winning coach in California high school basketball Coach McKnight gave a humorous talk about his basketball coaching career at Mater Dei The luncheon was attended by more than 30 members of the Lettermenrsquos Club

The next scheduled event to be a summer BBQ at the residence of one of the members in Orange

The Alumni Circle (AC) was created nearly 15 years ago by a team of alumni that cared deeply about meeting the needs of financial aid for children and grandchildren of MD alumni This group formerly known as the Alumni Advisory Council began staffing and selling alumni sportwear and popcorn at all home football games as a way to generate funds that are now contributed to the Alumni Heritage Fund Over the years they have awarded nearly $100000 in need-based financial aid

The Alumni Circle is a fun active and eclectic group of alumni from all eras of graduates Members volunteer to help reunion classes with registration and tours of campus They participate in Mater Deirsquos Family Mass amp Pancake Breakfast and Christmas at the Corner This group also travels to away games to support our teams and cheer on the Monarchs Whenever and wherever they can help represent the Mater Dei Alumni Association the AC is happy to help All levels of involvement are welcomed and appreciated

1960sGeorge Salapski rsquo62 is excited to announce the birth of a granddaughter last May just five days before the last of his three daughters got married He is planning to retire from Boeing in the fall after 45 years in the industry

Maria (Bettencourt) Myers rsquo62 would like everyone to know that her daughter Alex graduated from medical school on May 21 2010 She is now a DO with a Masters degree in Teaching Health Sciences from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona She has started her residency at Downey Regional Medical Center Alex has moved to Seal Beach and is happy as a clam Maria accompanied her daughter to the welcome dinner for incoming residents at the Reef near the Queen Mary It was like the United Nations and very inspirational Alex is entering a new phase of her professional life and it is really exciting for the Myers family Bobbie (Buzo) Hoyt rsquo62 and her husband spent two weeks traveling through Europe this summer They visited Prague in the Czech Republic Bilbao Spain and then on to Munich Germany before heading home She is looking forward to the Class of lsquo62rsquos next reunion in 2012

Jane (Wagoner) Anderson rsquo62 Itrsquos now been over a year and a half since Janersquos liver transplant and all is great She is still active as a volunteer with the Riverside Sheriffrsquos Department and an elected official of the Jurupa Community Services District that provides water and sewer conservation graffiti abatement and also manages a portion of the Parks and recreation facilities in the Jurupa Valley Since this is an election year she will be running for re-election in November and that is always an interesting time Craig Steckler rsquo62 and his wife have 10 grandkids He is still working after 42 years in law enforcement He has been a police chief since 1980 and the police chief in Fremont CA since 1986 a community of 218000 Craig was elected President of the California Police Chiefs Association in 2000 and is currently 3rd Vice President of the International Association of Chiefs of Police which is a worldwide organization in 101 countries with 24000 members Craig will become President in 2012 at the annual conference which will be held in San Diego

Jannette (De Sutter) Curti lsquo62 lives in Redlands CA Jannette and her husband Larry just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with their son Louis daughter-in-law Amy and three grandaughters Ashley Amanda and Alyssa She is still working with Larry in their trucking business Jannette says she is very blessed and proud to be called an MDHS alumni Go Monarchs

Carol (Cangi) Warford rsquo62 is one proud grandma Her oldest grandson who graduated from Annapolis two years ago is now a First Lt in the Marine Corp He is married and living in No Carolina Her next grandson served four years in the Air Force and is now in the Air Force Reserve Special Services His job is to guard a 4 star General and will be going to Afghanistan soon Her oldest granddaughter is married has two girls lives in Eastvale and works for the Marriott Hotels She has a grandson attending Cal Baptist who is a golfer one attending UCI who is a soccer player and one attending Santiago College She has twin grandsons in South Carolina who graduated this year One of them plays football the other is into ldquoshag dancingrdquo (a big thing in the South) She has two who are graduating from 8th grade two going into 6th grade and one going into 1st grade In all she has ten grandsons two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters Carol says ldquoWe have been blessedrdquo

Craig Trudeau lsquo62 and wife Leigh live in Thousand Oaks They have so many children and grandchildren to celebrate almost every month of the year Craig and Leigh have 12 grandchildren The oldest Crystal on staff for Campus Crusade for Christ is getting ready to leave for Asia Prayers are welcome The remaining are Mitch Sarah Cassie (Fresno) Dustin Emily Elizabeth and Abigail (Spokane) Samantha and Joe (Chewelah WA) Taylor and Tylin (Camarillo) and our youngest great granddaughter Hayden (daughter of Mitch Fresno) The Trudeaus say ldquoWe are so very blessedrdquo

Gregory Kelly rsquo69 owner of Kellyrsquos Hobby Shop in Tustin recently built ldquoThe Tower of Babelrdquo This extraordinary work of art is on exhibit at the Orange County Fair 2010 This ancient Old Testiment model took six months to create It is made from wet clay just like the Babylonians used pancaked with a rolling pin then cut into thousands of blocks precisely cut sanded then fit into place just as the ancient Babylonians would have done it He has dedicated this model to our troops in Iraq where ldquoThe Tower of Babelrdquo was situated in approximately 4000 BC

In September of 2007 Kamila established Kamileonrsquos Kloset Inc in the Atlanta area with a mission to transform lives by promoting the economic independence of disadvantaged men and women The organization provides a renewed sense of confidence amp self-

esteem by providing professional attire transformational image and grooming services career development and life coaching tools to help men and women transitioning into the workforce reach their full potential in becoming self-sufficient thereby reducing poverty

They service multi-cultural men and women with different experiences Their clients have had to struggle and overcome domestic abuse homelessness due to Hurricane Katrina incarceration a death of a loved one andor lack of an education Therefore when they arrive at the ldquoKlosetrdquo boutique for their transformation they have graduated from their respective training programs and are on their way to their first job interview The team at Kamileonrsquos Kloset find It is truly a wonderful experience and an honor to partner with their clients during this critical time in their lives

The paradox that disadvantaged men and women face as they conclude their job training programs is their readiness to work but their lack of financial resources to purchase suitable clothes and their lack of knowledge about image presentation and life skills to become self-sufficient They need support and encouragement but in addition they need appropriate clothes assistance in dressing and help with presentation skills This is a real dilemma that can prevent and intimidate qualified candidates from applying for job interviews Consequently this situation can trap individuals in a cycle of poverty and dependency Kamileonrsquos Kloset Program Services are designed to help people overcome this barrier and become self-sufficient The program consists of two key elements Professional Image Transformation and Transformational Life Coaching

Professional Image Transformation Each man and woman gets a complete makeover from head to toe For the woman this includes a private wardrobe consultation interview appropriate clothing accessories an appointment with our professional styling team as well as grooming and cosmetic instruction and products Each man receives a private consultation interview appropriate clothing for blue or white-collar jobs accessories an appointment with our professional styling team alterations (if needed) and a personal grooming kit

Transformational Life Coaching (TLC) encourages economic independence and career development by providing clients with a network of support practical information and the inspiration to achieve self-defined success in their career and life This Program is designed to help regain self-esteem develop a plan for personal and economic recovery and learn life skills It is the first and only employment retention model of its kind that moves disadvantaged men and women towards self-sufficiency by addressing their emotional social and economic needs in relation to work home and their community TLC consists of weekly interactive workshops on a variety of career development topics opportunities to participate in one-on-one life coaching mentoring and much more
