On June 17 the All People CDF Freedom Schools programlaunched its second year as a sponsor site or the ChildrenDeense Fund Freedom Schools Program at Lincoln ParkElementary School located on the South Side o Columbus.

We have the opportunity to provide a unique summerexperience or our scholars, lled with literacy, art,physical activity, community gardening, parentengagement, eld trips, awesome guest presentations, andeven a rst-time lm project - at no cost! said RachelWard, Director o All People Freedom Schools and TeCommunity Development or All People Aer SchoolProgram.

CDF Freedom Schools is a national, literacy-enrichmentsummer and aerschool program or students enteringgrades 1-12. Te program curriculum supports childrenand amilies in ve essential components identied as

All People CDF Freedom Schools Enjoys Second Year of Programminginvolvement; social action and civic engagement;intergenerational servant leadership development; andnutrition, health and mental health. Tis summer, ananticipated 150 sites nationwide will host CDF FreedomSchools. Te CDF Freedom School Program has grown incapacity since the previous year rom being able to serve50 scholars to now being able to serve 75 scholars daily,entering grades 1-9. Community Development or AllPeople is superbly blessed to receive support rom a varietyo unding organizations, so that we may in turn support

Wow, its hard to believe that itsalread y July. In just 6 short months,we have experienced a number oinitiatives and eorts coming toa successul close. Long-awaitedrenovations to our 2nd oor were

completed resulting in the creationo new meeting rooms and acommercial kitchen. Te UnitedMethodist Free Store, our agshipdirect service oering received a

much deserved ace li. New ooringand paint, welcomes all our shoppers.We also craed, and adopted a newstrategic plan which will guide andinorm our eorts organizationallyor the next 3-5 years. As we lookorward, the remainder o 2013is no less exciting. Our annualBack to School days, an initiativeo the Free Store is just around thecorner. Additionally, we will hostour annual training conerenceOctober 26-28. Tis years theme isEmbracing Diversity: Congregationaland Community Development ina Multicultural World, and withexpanded capacity resulting romour recently completed building

renovations we hope to conductour biggest event yet. L astly, wehave already scheduled our annualcelebration event. On November 13,Nationwide Childrens Hospital will

again play host to this celebratoryevening. Tis year we welcome Dr.Scott Morris as our guest speaker.A board certied amily practicephysician and an ordained UnitedMethodist minister, Dr. Morris isCEO o the Church Health Centerlocated in Memphis, N. So asyou can see, as quickly as the 1sthal o the year has come and gone,the second hal o 2013 is boundto progress just as quickly. I lookorward to you joining us or theinspiring journey that awaits us.

Message From Executive Director

Summer is here and that meansits time to welcome Volunteer InMission (VIM) teams rom ar andwide seeking both short (a ew hoursto single day) and l ong (upwards oa week) opportunities to engage inimpactul community based projectsand clean-up initiatives. Tis year,VIM teams are expected almost every

week beginning in mid-June throughend-o-month July. While many willoriginate rom Central Ohio, otherswill travel rom as ar as Michigan,Minnesota, and West Virginia or thepurpose o lending their time, talent,and treasures to the South Side and its

residents. For those that are local,they will travel back to their homeseach evening. For those visitingCD4AP rom aar, the building willbecome their home both literallyand guratively. Each night, meetingrooms are converted to sleepingspace and common areas areconverted to quiet places where bothyouth and adults can debrie all thatthey experienced that day.

Comprised primarily o youth groupmembers and their adult leaders,VIM teams tackle everything romtending to community gardens,painting, minor home repairs,and community clean-up. While

VIM team project days and weekscan oen be quite hectic, I am sothankul or these individuals andtheir commitment to improving thequality o lie or those living on theSouth Side. Tank you to all theVIM teams, past, present and utureor all that you have contributed.

Its gardening time again here on theSouth Side and we are all really busy.

Te South Side Communiy Gardenhas already had its rst harvest ozucchini, squash, okra, peppers andbasil. Stephanie Connors is overseeingthis large garden which is near the siteo the ormer South Side SettlementHouse.

Te Mike Dyle Community Gardenat 764 Wager is just as busy. Teperennial owers planted last yearby the Northwest UMC volunteers

headed up by Denny Stephens haveburst into bloom. Planting was laterthan at the South Side C ommunityGarden because o a broken waterline. Now all the vegetables arecoming up in the boxes. Te BoyScouts are earning merit badgesor gardening with us there. Teyhave built us a beautiul compostbin which we will enjoy or years tocome.

In June, 15 persons, including thescouts, joined Bill Dawson romthe Franklin Park Conservatoryas he gave us a demonstration oncomposting. Everyone enjoyed theclass and well all be enjoying theproduce or weeks to come.

Free Store Back-To-School Event: Clothing & Supplies Needed

Its Back to S chool time again atthe United Methodist Free Store!We will be partnering with ourneighborhood schools again thisyear to provide school supplies orall the students at our o the localelementary schools.

Te parents and teachers were verygrateul or the support provided lastyear, and they are very eager or theevent again this year.

Please continue to gather yourschool supplies through VBS,Sunday morning oerings, and othercreative means you have establishedthrough the years. Please bring themto the Free Store the week of August5th. Due to the large quantity oitems needing to be sorted, theearlier in the week the supplies aredelivered, the better. I a group romyour church would like to help sort

the supplies, we will be packing themup August 12th through August 14th.Clothing or all school age childrenis appreciated. New underclothes,socks, and uniorms (dark pants andskirts, and white tops) are needed. Fora complete list o school supplies weneed, please see list below.

New Strategic Plan

South Side Renaissance Home Repair Update

Te South Side Renaissance (SSR)Home Repair Program providesgrants to existing homeowners inthe impact area to make exteriorimprovements to their homes. Inaddition to unding rom privatedonars, home repair grant dollars

have also been provided by ColumbusCity Council with particularemphasis on assisting Veterans.Beginning in September o 2012, SSR

provided sixteen home repair grantsto homeowners in the rst phase othe program. Now into Phase three,repairs have been completed ontwenty-seven homes with another13 projects underway. By the endo August, SSR hopes to completeanother een home repairs.

Te CD4AP daily lunch program, Loaves & Fishes has recently moved toits new location, storeront space located at 1702 Parsons Ave. Te bright,cheery space has proven ver y accommodating during the rst month ooperation. Current plans are to remain at this location until renovations arecompleted at the Reeb Elementary School, sometime in 2015. At that time,Loaves & Fishes will move to the renovated building joining other agenciesand organizations delivering programs and ser vices to the community.Minor renovations were required prior to moving into the location. National Training Event

EMBRACING DIVERSIY:Congregational and CommunityDevelopment in a MulticulturalWorld, is the theme o the rainingCenter conerence on October 26-28.

Participants will be oered a varietyo workshops which will encourage

hem to take their ministries to thenext level by exploring eectiveways to embrace diversity, bothnside and outside the church walls.

Building Rennovations Complete

Eorts to renovate the CD4AP mainservice center loc ated at 946 Parsons Ave.have recently been completed. Tese

renovations include a major overhaul tothe 2nd oor that began all 2012. Le d bythe eorts o General Contractor, KMMBuilders, the renovations resulted inthe creation o several new classrooms,meeting space, and restrooms. Tecenter piece o the renovations is a brandnew commercial kitchen. Te kitchen,outtted with mostly donated equipmentrom Nationwide Childrens Hospital, will

serve as the hub or healthy eating and demonstration cookingclasses related to the HEAL program. In addition, the kitchen willbe used to prepare the meal served daily at Loaves & Fishes. TeFree Store recently received a aceli as well; its rst since movingto the current location. New paint and ooring have provided anew and inviting experience or Free Store shoppers.

Rev. Karen M. Cook serves as a Pastor orthe United Methodist Church or All People

and Director o the raining Center withCommunity Development or All People.Along with her role at C4AP, she serves onseveral committees and task orces relatedto the Capitol Area South District and theWest Ohio Conerence. In addition, shewas recently appointed to serve as a boardmember or the General Board o Churchand Society or the United MethodistChurch.

Ms. Weisbrod is Ofce andCommunications Assistant or CommunityDevelopment or All People. A 2011graduate o Otterbein University, Ms.

Weisbrod joined CD4AP in April o 2013bringing with her a breadth o strategiccommunications experience in bothnon-prot and small business sector. Inher role, Sara provides administrative andcommunications support to all CD4APmembers with her eorts ocused bothinternally and externally.

Mr. Rupp supervises the Loaves andFishes daily lunch ministry at CommunityDevelopment For All People. Mr.Rupp works to create an atmosphere ohospitality and community among boththe diners and the sta at Loaves andFishes. Mark joined CD4AP in February

o 2013, and brings a wealth o experiencein community ministry, and a passion tobuild mutuality with the poor. Mark iscurrently pursuing his Masters o Divinityat the Methodist Teological School inDelaware, Ohio.
