Letter from the Director IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering has had an excellent year as a leading hydraulic research institute. The activities and accomplishments of IIHR during the period of July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2005 can be found in this year’s Summary of Activities. During the fiscal year 2005, IIHR has made significant strides in hydroscience research. A few of the high-lights of the year are found below, and numerous additional activities and accomplishments of the IIHR faculty and staff are further detailed on the pages that follow. On October 28, 2004, IIHR held an open house at its new Experimental Surface / Atmosphere Interactions Facility on Sierra Court in Iowa City. This new leased facility supports research involving outdoor experimentation and remote sensing, and allows IIHR to have additional space to house IIHR’s field instrumentation. IIHR was acknowledged on June 9, 2005, by a prestigious award from the American Society of Civil Engi-neer’s History and Heritage Committee, dedicating the C. Maxwell Stanley Hydraulics Laboratory as a “National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark”. Receiving this award celebrates the unique construction, use and impact of the C. Maxwell Stanley Hydraulics Laboratory throughout the 20th century, and places it among the major struc-tures of national importance to the engineering profession. Also, in June, 2005, Dr. Joseph Howe, assistant professor (1929-1938), associate professor and depart-ment secretary (1939-1942), and professor and chair of the Department of Mechanics and Hydraulics (1943-1970), was inducted into the Iowa Legacy of Engineering. A graduate of UI’s College of Engineering, Joseph re-shaped the Department of Mechanics and Hydraulics’ curriculum and established policies that led to the dramatic growth of the graduate program. Joseph also formed a strong partnership with Hunter Rouse. Their parallel ef-forts established the Department of Mechanics and Hydraulics and IIHR as international leaders in hydraulic engi-neering education. IIHR expended a total of $6,806,293 during FY 2005 in pursuit of its education and research mission. Of this amount, $4,031,034 was expended for research projects funded through grants and contracts proposed and administered by IIHR staff, and $2,143,050 was expended for IIHR’s operation, and laboratory and equipment maintenance. The remaining $632,209 was invested by IIHR in new equipment. IIHR spent an additional $79,206 in equipment matching funds.

The IIHR staff looks forward to another banner year in 2005-2006. Please do not hesitate to call on any of the IIHR staff if we can be of assistance to you or your organization. Best wishes, Larry J. Weber IIHR Director
