I had the opportunity to work on a number of architectural projects during my internship at Atelier PRO. Working alongside project archiect Martijn de Visser, I spent extensive time on educational institutes such as Kloppend Hart in Warmond, Basisscholen in Brielle, Krimpen an de Lek, Carmel College, Woonzorg in Nieuw Vennep, and Kindcentrum Vosholen. Working with Revit 2012 and 2013 and Maxwell Render Suite, my work included modelling and producing drawings through all phases of design, and producing final drawings and renders for clients and design reviews.

My work experience allowed me to be familiarized with real large-scale architectural projects, and the design and work process behind educational institutions, civic buildings, and hosptials. I took particular interest in this project, a competition entry I did with a small team at Atelier PRO. My commitment to the entire competition process allowed me to get inovlved in the early deisgn and development of a major project. I was responsible for Revit Modelling, design diagrams, and final renders of our proposal.

HUNG SHUI KIU DESIGNING A NEW CITY IN NORTHERN HONG KONG - USI

I spent my second internship at Urban Strategies committed to the development of Hung Shui Kiu, an urban centre in Northern Hong Kong, just across from Shenzhen. This project required the design of an entire city including a financial centre, unique residential and mixed-use neighbourhoods, entertainment and research districts, a comprehensive transportation network and proper infrastructure.

This is the largest scale project I have worked on, and the experience has taught me many things about urban design and development, industry, and planning techniques. My responsibilities included participating in meetings and presentations, working on the city model in ArchiCAD, and doing final renders and diagrams.

This project deals with a new approach to the botanical garden, stemming from its initial form as a place of research. Combining principles from quantum physics, neuroscience, the psychedelic experience, human psychology, and philosophy, I sought to create a garden reflecting the possibilities of human experience and our understanding of consciousness. This project was my study on how architectural space and programming can give rise to ‘psychedelic’ experiences - unique experiences that by definition alter our perceptions and consciousness. This project was a meditiation on how architectural space can mediate experience, sensory activity, thought processes, and well-being. Acclaimed author and neuroscientist Sam Harris wrote in an essay:

“Many people don’t realize that all psychoactive drugs modulate the existing neurochemistry of the brain—either by mimicking specific neurotransmitters or by causing the neurotransmitters themselves to be more active. There is nothing t hat one can experience on a drug that is not, at some level, an expression of t he brain’s potential.”

I had the opportunity to work on a number of large urban design projects during my first internship at Urban Strategies Inc. My tasks included preparing proposals, quotes and reports, modelling developments, researching urban trends, preparing renders, mapping networks, and diagramming key design elements. Programs used include Illustrator, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, Maxwell Render, Photoshop and InDesign.

I spent a great deal of time working on the Etobicoke Streetscape design, which I had the opportunity to present for the design review committee at Toronto’s City Hall. The project went on to win a 2011 Toronto Urban Design Award and I received a USI intern scholarship for my work.

ECONORTHA CARBON NEUTRAL WINTER HOME

Eco-North is a carbon-neutral house designed for the Toronto Home Spec competition in 2011. The success of the design relies heavily on the open planning and simplification in design. The house maximizes efficiency by placing all mechanical systems into a core that can easily serve all parts of the house, as well as grouping similarly programmed spaces together.

A HEED analysis of the design shows that the house, merely through high insulation levels, efficient appliances, photovoltaic power, and adherence to passive principles achieves a reduction in carbon emissions by 77% compared to a regular home of the same size, and a reduction of 76% compared to an “energy efficient” home. The design also uses less than a third of the site energy, electricity, and fuel consumption compared to an energy efficient home of the same size, resulting in a total cost saving in energy of 64%. The HEED analysis, however, does not recognize considerations such as material sourcing, construction practices, use of biomass and water reuse, and many of the other innovative mechanical systems employed in the building, which result in even further cost and energy savings as well as a lower carbon footprint. The building is successfully powered entirely by renewable resources and avoids the need to purchase carbon offsets to achieve carbon neutrality.

The design for lakehouse is derived from the beauty of its site. Two tall wrought iron walls cut into the hillside, serving as the entrance into the house. As one descends the steps down the hill, the walls crop out the forest enclosing the house, leaving a strip of sky as the lone view to the outside world. At the bottom of the hill, the iron walls lead into a glass hallway, where we are reacquainted with the forest that surrounds us.

Weathering steel panels are placed in front of areas of cement and glass, varying in width and spacing, to create areas of enclosure, openness, and transition. The mullions follow the same principle of varied spacing, and the facade therefore parallels the site: areas of enclosure transition into areas of openness just as the dense forest transitions into the openness of the private lake. The facade and site help dictate a spatial hierarchy as places of significance , such as the artist’s studio, bedroom, living room, and dining room, are all placed along the lake, where the facade transitions to glass. Changes in volume help further enforce a hierarchy, and the artist’s studio, with the tallest height, closest proximity to the lake, and most glass is clearly the most important space in the house. The studio extends towards the water, past the rest of the building, to allow for a panoramic view of Taylor Lake. The columns supporting the overhanging bedroom continue out into the lake, in a rhythm similar to that created by the trees of the forest, and the panelling and mullions in the facade.
