Done for my second year studio course, this project dealt with a new approach to the botanical garden. Pulling research from quantum physics, neuroscience, psychedelic experience, psychology, and philosophy, I sought to create a garden reflecting the possibilities of human experience and our understanding of consciousness. This project was my study on how architectural space and programming can give rise to ‘psychedelic’ experiences - unique experiences that by definition alter our perceptions and consciousness. This project was essential in my development as a designer as I had the opportunity to really understand architecture and how it can control experience, sensory activity, thought processes, and well-being.
Acclaimed author and neuroscientist Sam Harris wrote in an essay: “Many people don’t realize that all psychoactive drugs modulate the existing neurochemistry of the brain—either by mimicking specific neurotransmitters or by causing the neurotransmitters themselves to be more active. There is nothing that one can experience on a drug that is not, at some level, an expression of the brain’s potential.”
My goal was to use this understanding of neurochemistry to create spaces that could invoke the consciousness-altering effects of psychedelic phyto-chemical alkaloids found in various plant species throughout the world.

In August 2011 the Government re-activated the study process for the future development of the Hung Shui Kiu New Development Area (NDA) in the North Western New Territories. That study is being undertaken in conjunction with a community engagement process to obtain public input. The second round of community engagement was part of the Stage 1 of the study, the Envisaging Stage, and was undertaken in December 2011. The study is now moving towards Stage 2 and the preparation and discussion of a Preliminary OutlineDevelopment Plan (PDOP) which is programmed for mid 2012.
This submission has been commissioned as a private sector initiative to provide an alternative and parallel study process. The intention is to provide to the Gov-ernment an “informal PODP” which is designed to achieve Government objectives which have been established for the area. It enables the direct involvement of international experts with experience in sustainable urban design working in conjunction with local consultants.
This informal PODP has enabled the establishment of a sustainable and realistic framework for the NDA which could provide a reference for the Government study, and for the community engagement process. A view has been taken to optimise the broad public benefit which can arise from developing an area which has unique linkages with the major changes that are happening in Shenzhen. This context requires some re-thinking of the role that Hung Shui Kiu can under-take in looking ahead.
The purpose of this informal PODP is to stimulate discussion about the forms and content of development that are appropriate for Hung Shui Kiu. It has built-in flexibility and a focus on implementability. As part of this process options have been looked at in terms of the environmental capacity of the NDA to enable it to make a significant contribution towards enhanced provision of land supply to meet Hong Kong’s future urbanisation needs.
This submission is made as part of the Government’s public engagement process and presents an informed understanding of sustainable PODP requirements for the area.

Eco-North is a carbon-neutral house designed for the Toronto Home Spec competition in 2011. The design incorporates a variety of sustainable techniques to best utilize sustainable design techniques. The orientation and use of louvers across the facade allow control of shading and solar heat gain throughout the year. The orientation and design of windows allows for natural ventilation year-round, further facilitating cooling during the summer season. A trombe wall along the south facade helps store heat from the sun throughout the wintertime.

The design for lakehouse is derived from the beauty of its site. Two tall wrought iron walls cut into the hillside, serving as the entrance into the house. As one descends the steps down the hill, the walls crop out the forest enclosing the house, leaving a strip of sky as the lone view to the outside world. At the bottom of the hill, the iron walls lead into a glass hallway, where we are reacquainted with the forest that surrounds us.

Collective Memories was an installation I did at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture in 2010. The installation was essentially a tensile fabric space incorporating sound and visual projections to invoke the desired experience. World events such as 9/11 hold a certain place in all of our mind, they are moments so powerful that we all have a memory of them. We can recall how we felt, where we were, who were were with, what we were doing.

The moments I have painting, are like the moments I have acting, or singing, or fighting. It is the moment that something is being created, and nothing outside of that moment matters. This is why I love art in all media, in all forms: architecture, fashion, painting, drawing, martial arts, acting, writing, music. In their essense, these are just moments of creation, moments where we change the world. I have extensive experience as an artist, having been exhibited at a variety of art shows, exhbitis and festivals across Ontario. The following work gives a general idea of my work, ranging in colour use, media, and realism. I have no style, I just create.
