Suggested Activities for Day Care ­ block 7

Note to Teacher :• Some outdoor and indoor play activities are given below and you can include these along with the regularactivities.• Art and craft activities mentioned below are for different age groups. Please use your discretion while selecting the craft, it has to be to the age level of the children.• These crafts can be spread across 23 days depending on the time taken for each.

Pottering around with plants (an ongoing activity)What You Need:Aluminum baking tray / , preferably at least 3” deep by 14” long Sand and potting soilPacket of fast growing seeds (mustard seeds will do just fine)Instructions : Have the children help you spoon about 3/4” of sand into a layer on the bottom of your aluminum 

baking tray. (This will be a water drainage layer) Cover the sand with an additional 2”  or so of potting soil. Now 

have some writing fun: with a finger or a stick, have your child trace his/her name in large, block letters. (If she 

has a really long name, consider a shorter nickname, or even better, her initials!) In the “trench” made by this 

letter tracing, plant your radish seeds approximately 1” apart. Cover them with soil, sprinkle with water, and place

in a sunny window/ outdoor. Keep your soil damp, and watch the soil for the next few days. Within a week, you 

should see baby seedlings and beautiful letters, too!

Outdoor ­ Counting a Silly WalkGo for a walk with the children. Make up some silly steps to do together. Examples: Take two large steps and three tiny steps counting 1,2 ,1,2,3 ­ 1,2, or 2 steps front, 2 steps back, etc., as you go. Try variations like – hop like a rabbit, walk like an elephant, jump like a monkey etc to the count of numbers.

Story telling: Take the children outdoor or make them sit in the class and start the storytelling session. Narrate any small moral story with more of animal characters related to the theme of the week. It can be creation stories, coyote stories, madeupon thespot stories, real life natural history stories, which give meaning to the experience in a personal and memorable way. Let it be the one that entertain children and arouse their curiosity if they are to hold the child's attention. Once the narration is done, encourage the children bring to life the creatures and characters from these stories with role plays, dance, music and art.

Indoor Block GamesSpread out a square napkin on a table. Now, using small blocks, have the children place one block in each corner of the napkin. Continue with other directions, such as;• Make a stack of blocks, 4 blocks high in the center of the napkin.• Make a line of 10 blocks.• Put two blocks in each corner of the napkin.• Make an X on the napkin with blocks.• Make an E or H or any other letter with the blocks.

IndoorMusical hugs (AV room)

This is a game that we call Musical Hugs. Make the children dance to the music, and when the music is paused, the children have to find a partner to hug. 2, 3, or more children can hug each other, until the music is back on. Its very fun and kids love playing this game.

Outdoor : Hit the bottlesGet some empty plastic bottles. Arrange them in a line. Take a few sheets of newspaper and crumple into a ball. Ask the children to hold the ball with their hands and hit as many bottles as they can. Make sure that each child gets a chance to hit the bottles.

Treasure pit: (Sandpit)This can be done in the sandpit. Hide a few objects like blocks, stones, bottle caps and other such things in the sandpit and make the children search for them. Instruct them to collect the objects in the bucket.

In and out:This can be played indoors but its better if it’s played outdoors. Draw a big circle on the ground and make the children stand around it. Start reciting the rhyme or can even clap hands. Instruct the children to keep running around the circle as you clap your hands and stop as soon as you stop clapping, then wait for your instruction and do as you say. If you say ‘In’ the children have to jump in the circle and if you say ‘Out’ they need to stand outside the circle.

Outdoor Splash pool : Dance in the pool: Take the children out for the splash pool. Fill the pool with very little water to the knee level and put some objects inside like a small bucket, mug, tube, a loofah, ball and some toys. Now allow one child to get into the pool and choose any one object and dance as he/she likes using the object. Children can take turns for the activity. Let this be an individual activity rather than group as children may get hurt in groups.

Indoor : Leg picksSpread some small objects on the floor like bits of paper, stones or bottle caps. Draw two lines on either side on the floor. Make children stand in a row and instruct them that they have to walk on to the other side picking up thebeads and other small objects until all the things are cleared. This can be played as a relay also.

IndoorFree play: Provide all the indoor play toys and let the children play any games of their choice.

In / Outdoor : Tiger in the middleTiger in the middle is an indoor game where all the children are involved. Make the children stand in a circle and let one child named as Tiger stand in the middle. The object of the game is to toss the ball between the players while the Tiger in the middle tries to get the ball. The game can be played almost anywhere including in a splash pool.

Indoor : Musical ChairsLine up the chairs (Nos.1 less than the total no. of children) facing in opposite directions in the AV room. Ask the children to stand in a line and walk along the chairs at the start of the music and sit on a chair at the stop of the music. The child who is left standing is out of the game. The music can be the nursery rhyme CD, which the children who are out of the game can listen as well.

Outdoor : Flying BirdTake the children outdoor and make them stand in a circle joining their hands together to form windows. Choose one child to stand in the middle of the circle. Have the middle child pretend tobe a bird and fly through the window while other children sing the window song:

Fly in and out the windowLittle flying birdEach child can have his/her turn to be a bird and fly through the windows of the circle. This is an easy way to 

teach the concept of ‘in and out’ to the little ones. The game can be used as fillers during the circle time as and 

when required.

Play Dough Bugs:Take the children outdoor to collect twigs, pebbles, weeds and reeds in plastic bags. Back in the classroom, dump all into a paper plate for each child. The teachers should make dough from maida /ceramic powder (easily available in any stationery shop) and add food colouring to it. Give each child a ball of maida, they can make bugswith this and use twigs and pebbles make eyes, reeds/weeds make nice antennae and stingers, sticks are good for legs and leave to dry.Or they can use straw pieces and googly eyes .

Free hand drawing: Give white paper for each child and ask them to draw their imagination and colour it beautifully. Give them ideas but don’t help them in drawing. Let them draw as they like. And for older group they can be asked to see some object and then draw looking at it. Let them do it. After its finished make them sign / puttheir thumb print on their drawing.

Library Hour:This hour will be for the kids to explore new things with the help of books and pictures. Show them a few books, talk about the pictures and if the child wants to turn pages or look at the books, encourage them but keep a watch so that the books are not mishandled. Ask the children to pick out the book they would like to see.

Art and CraftSponge cat craft:Take a rectangle piece of sponge. Approximately at 1/3 parts of the longer side, tie a ribbon to divide the head andthe body of the cat. The top two end tips of the smaller part should be tied with rubber bands to make the ears of the cat. Draw eyes or help the child to stick buttons for eyes and draw whiskers or stick shredded black paper and draw a nose and mouth. On the bigger part of the rectangle draw paws and stick a short tail on the back. Decorate the cat with buttons down the front.

My Hand Elephant:Help the children trace their hand prints on the chart paper with grey colour for the body of the elephant. And two palm prints for ears. Cut out the prints & glue it accordingly as shown in the picture above. The eyes can be marked with the black marker. Punch a hole and tie a string so that it can be hung.

Red Circle LollipopsProvide 6/6” of square piece of chart paper each one for the children and make them trace 3 circles of different sizes using bottle cap, small bangle or any other similar circle objects. Teach them how to trace the shape on the chart by placing the object on the paper and drawing line around it. Help the children if they are not able to. Once the circles are cut ask the children to color each circle in red color. After the circles are colored, make them glue each shape as per their size one above the 

other applying a very little glue only in the center of the circles. Help the children sprinkle glitter powder onto the small top circle after which they can glue the straw to the second circle which is in the middle. The sparkling red circle lollopops are ready for the children to own.

Raindrop rubbingsCut raindrop shapes from sandpaper. Tape these raindrops to the table. Have the children place half a sheet of A4 sized sheet over the raindrops and rub a crayon over the raindrop. You will have to outline the raindrops with a black marker pen / sketch pen for them to stand out.

Art & Craft:Tissue Carnation FlowersTake a sheet of tissue paper.Cut it into 4 rectangles of equal size and place one rectangle over the other as layers. Hold the 4 layers together and make fan folds. At the center of the fan folding, secure using a piece of string. Holdthe corners of the fold together and make a zig zag cut. Do this for both the sides of the paper.Now expand the fan.Lift each layer of the fold upwards one by one.On lifting all the layers upwards, you’ve got your carnation flower.

Owl Paper Cup CraftWhat you will need: paper cup , acrylic paint and colored pencils, glue, printer paper, and scissors. Instructions:Draw an owl face, wings, and feet onto printer paper, color them, and cut them out. Paint your cup to match the face and wings and glue them to the cup as shown in the picture.You can also have your children punch holes in the top of the owl to make a pencil holder.

Pop Corn Treat BagUse watercolor markers on the back of a paper plate to color the outer rim yellow, a middle circle orange, and left the center of the plate white. Note to keep kids from painting the center of the plate, a can of beans or something similar would work well to cover it up.Allow to dry completely, then use scissors to cut the plate in half, and roll each piece up into a cone shape. Staple in place. Use a hole punch to punch holes in either side, and thread some ribbon through for a handle.

Spoon SnowmanMaterials Needed: Large white plastic spoon, lolli pop,wiggle eyes, ribbon, pom poms /button  Instructions: Take a large white plastic spoon and glue the paper part of a wrapped lollipop into the spoon.(To make it heavy) Leave it inside the paper! Turn over and glue on 2 small eyes and a tiny red ball for a nose. Take a 1 and half inch by 1 inch rectangle of black chart paper and fold in half have the long side going east to west when folding.Trim a small rectangle out of the side to form the hat. See photo.Before gluing it to the "front" of the spoon, put the red ribbon hanger on the top of spoon face side and glue. Then cover with the black hat holding it in place. Add a little bow on spoon and a couple bigger.

Hole  Punch Name PlateMaterial: A sheet of chartpaper, some glue, scrap paper in many colours, and a hole punch. Instructions: Give the kids rectangular pieces of brightly colored chart paper pieces. Let the kids write their namesin capital letters on it. Give them a glue stick to run over the name. They could even add a border. Let them 

sprinkle the multicolored holepunched circles (previously done by you) over the glue to create an attractive name plate!

Origami PigHelp children paint a white sheet pink with a sponge. Cut squares and give instructions to  children :Start by folding your square in half diagonally, and creasing carefully. Unfold. Now fold the square in half along the other diagonal, and crease again. Unfold again, and lay your square on the table with the white side facing up. Take one of the corners and fold it in until it meets the centre point. Crease well. Bring the opposite corner in to meet the centre too. Now fold the whole thing in half, pink side out. Turn both points up along the centre line, about half way. Fold the top two corners down to form his ears and then add your pig’s features! Now fold the topflap down again, just a little, to form the pig’s snout.

Spiral Snake CraftGive children a couple of chart paper to colour all over with a bright colour crayon. You can also use a paper plate. Cut out small pieces out of chart paper and draw a spiral on piece of chart paper with an oval shaped area in the center of the spiral. Cut along the spiral lines you drew. Draw a face on the snake. You can also decorate the body of the snake to looklike patterned snake skin. To display the snake, tape a length of string to the snake's head.

Air bubble paper catch:Mix colours in soap solution in different containers and blow it outdoor. Give plain white sheets each for a child and ask them to try to catch it with the paper. When the bubble burst kids will be surprised to see colourful circles on their white sheet. Let this be a group activity.

Fingerprint Corn Poppy CraftTake some Red and green paint in the lid. Help children thumb print on the paper to make 4 poppy petals in a "square" (circle) formation. Then they have to dip the tip of their index finger into the green / black paint and use it to stamp the green or black center of poppy .

Uncle U craft `Make a big letter 'U' on the chart paper and let children colour it blue. Now add facial features.You can give coloured yarn / wool to the children to make beard and mustache and stick on the face Alternately children can colour with a brown or black crayon on a separate chart paper and you need to cut out the beard and moustache and stick them on the face.
