Message From The General Manager
By Rick Kelso, General Manager
We have a very hectic month planned for October as we are trying to get ready for the busy season. This include all the golf
events, all the parties in the restaurants and the maintenance staff preparing the golf
course for the busy season. The entire staff is extremely busy and doing their best to provide you the best experience each time you come to the Club.
This summer has been extremely slow for both our clubs, especially July and August. The weather was the major contributor to this slow summer; there was lots of rain with most of it taking place during our prime tee times in midmornings. The heat was also a big factor with temperatures reaching the mid-90s most of the summer (which felt like 110°) and with 100% humidity. We are hoping that with October here the weather will become a lot more manageable for everyone to come out and play our wonderful golf courses.
Danny and the maintenance staff have had a tough summer with trying to maintain all of our golf courses. The rain can cause staff difficulties in spraying and mowing the golf courses. When the rain comes so often some of the chemicals spayed will wash away. As the weather pattern starts to become a little more predictable and manageable, we will start seeing the condition of the course improve.
Danny and the maintenance staff have done a tremendous job with some very trying times this summer, in getting these courses in the best conditions we can. Great job! Overseeding will take place at Sugarmill Woods on Monday, November 4th through Thursday, November 7th. The golf course will be closed and will re-open on Friday, November 8th. Southern Woods will overseed on Monday, November 11th to the 14th. The golf course will be closed these days and will re-open on Friday, November 15th. Note: That we will be only overseeding the greens and tees this year. Thank you for all of your cooperation during this time.
The Annual Men's Member-Guest will take place on Thursday, October 31st, Friday, November 1st, and Saturday, November 2nd of 2019. This year's committee has worked diligently this summer, putting all the details together for this year's event. To that end, I'm proud to announce that we have 30 two-person teams. We are still looking for a few more teams, if you are interested in participating in the Men's Member-Guest this year, please contact David Knighton immediately. We all are very excited for a great Men's Member-Guest this year.
Looking over the event calendar for the upcoming months to see what we have going on, and WOW! Robin has got the restaurant extremely busy. Make sure that you make your dinner reservations early and so not to miss out on these outstanding events with the great food prepared by Chef Joe.

The Pro’s Corner
By David Knighton, PGA Head Golf Professional
The first thing any golfer wants to learn to do is hit their driver far. Without fail, this leads to them swinging harder or
more wildly and will never lead to a consistently straight and long tee shot. While
swinging faster might be one of the main factors to hit it further, it's more important to keep a good tempo and to stay balanced. Becoming a good driver of the ball can be one of the most useful ways to improve your golf game; just hitting the fairway and having your approach shots from closer to the green will give you such an advantage over your playing partners, so there's no secret why.
If you, like most people, want to hit the ball further and straighter off the tee, here are some tips and drills for you to use that will help you achieve that.
Alignment
Before you set up, you need to know where you are aiming. Just before you address the ball, stand behind it so that it lines up between you and your target. Once you have done this, visualize a line from your ball to the target, then find an object in that line about two or three feet from your ball. Whether it's a stick or a leaf, it doesn't matter, this will just help you set your club face aiming at your target so that you can then line your body up to the target as well.
Setting Up
Your set up and stance when addressing the ball are just as important as your actual swing, so it's important to follow these guidelines to improve your consistency:
1. Set your feet just wider than shoulder width apart for a strong base.
2. The line of your legs, knees and shoulders should all be parallel to the line of your club-face aiming at your target.
3. Set your ball up on the inside of the heel of your leading foot (so your left foot if you are right handed).
4. Tilt your shoulders away from the target (i.e. your right shoulder should be lower than your left shoulder).
5. Keep your head behind the ball, but this should happen naturally with the ball at the front of your stance.
These five key points will encourage a number of things. Most importantly, it will encourage hitting up on the ball at impact. By hitting up on it (i.e. hitting it after the bottom of your swing arc), you will get as little side or back spin as possible. This is important because you will get more roll on the fairway and your ball speed through the air will be maximized, causing it to fly as far as your swing speed allows. Furthermore, setting up like this will help you lose that hook or slice that you might be struggling with.
The next thing to worry about is how far away you stand from the ball. If you stand too close to the ball, you will force yourself to swing outside in to make contact, causing a slice. If you're too far, you'll just end up reaching and never make good contact and lose all your power. Generally, it's best to stand with the grip of the club you're using about the length of your little finger to your thumb away from your leading hip.
Power and Consistency
You may have heard it said by commentators on TV that the pros “clear their hips” well through impact. What this means is that they use their hip turn through the down-swing to create speed instead of throwing their arms at it, or “casting” as it's called. The best way to try to get this feeling yourself is to drive your hips towards the target after you reach the top of your back-swing. While doing this, try to feel your weight shift from about 60-70% on your back foot during your back swing, to 80-90% on your front foot after you've hit the ball. This will promote the rotation of your hips and increase swing speed, but it will also improve the consistency of your ball striking. Improved ball striking is the simplest way to hitting the ball further and straighter. As previously mentioned, swinging faster is the key to hitting the ball further. This doesn't come easy, though. If you want to gain distance off the tee you first have to find a swing that is comfortable for yourself.
Once you've really grooved it, and you think you're hitting up on the ball and driving your hips through, you can start trying to swing faster with the same swing. Doing this will help you with swing speed while still maintaining some accuracy. Having said all of this, you should always worry about accuracy before distance, so make sure you practice as much as possible before you get out onto the course and swing yourself off your feet!
Give these tips a try on the range and also the golf course and if you're still having issues, please feel free to ask myself or any of us pro's here at the club's. See you next month on the practice tee.

I would like to remind everyone that the busy season will be starting soon and that the snowbirds will be making their way back to town. Most of our summer
events sold out with a week or two to spare until the event. PLEASE make sure to call the
restaurant and make reservations if there is an event that you are interested in. Once we reach the max amount then we have to cut the reservations off. We would love to serve every single member at every single event, but there are specific laws and staff capabilities in place. Every event offers a waiting list, and there are always last minute cancellations. If an event is sold out, then please make sure to sign up for the waiting list; this ensures that you will be called in the order you were placed on the list when we get cancellations.
A reminder that the “Special Interest Groups” section in the back of the newsletter each month has many different groups and activities in our area that people may wish to try. We have many different associations ranging from golf groups, card groups, charity organizations, etc. One group
Message From The Membership Director
in particular is the Singles Group. The Singles Group is a group for singles that meets once a month to have dinner together. This is a great way to make new connections and create new friendships. If anyone is interested in joining this or any other group that is offered, please turn to the back of the monthly newsletter for specific contact information. If you are interested in adding your group to our Special Interests section, or if you must make a change to your section, then please send me an email to [email protected] with any information you would like included in that section.
If you have any suggestions or concerns please feel free to give me a call at my direct line (352) 559-7106, or email me at [email protected]. Let's give a warm welcome to our newest members this month!!

Again, I'd like to say a big thank you to our year round members for supporting us

So come on out and do some laps or just wade around. October is typically the last month when the water temps remain in the 80's.
Tennis Lessons
Now that its cooled off, come on out and book a lesson Either Private or go in with a friend and take a semi-private. A private one hour lesson is $40.A private half hour lesson is $20. Take a one hour semi and its only $20 each.
Group tennis Instruction varies in price. From $10 each for an hour to $15-$20 each if its 1.5 hours.
Tennis League Play
Beginning early October, the three weekday Ladies Travel Leagues start play. Most start at Oak Village at 10:00 am. Some Monday League matches start at 11 am. The Monday (3.0) and Tuesday (3.5) leagues take two clay courts. The Thursday (3.0-3.5) use four clay courts. These courts are reserved for the HOME matches throughout the season. Golf Humor for the Month – One golfer asked his friend. Why are you so late in arriving for your tee time. His friend replied, it's Sunday. I had to toss a coin between going to church or playing golf. Yes, but that still doesn't tell me why you are late. Well, it took over 25 tosses to get it right.

Welcome to our 2018-19 SMWLGA Season. Our SMWLGA 2019-2020 season is off and running! Mother Nature cooperated and gave us a nice but quite hot Opening Day. The Scramble was followed by a lovely luncheon and meeting. Thank you to Mary Tarorick and Karen Hall for planning a patriotic themed display. In honor of September 11th, “Never Forget” was our focus and members shared remembrances of that fateful day.

The TCCC members drive and enjoy their Corvettes and experience a wide variety of functions and events. From a pleasant drive to an out-of-the-way restaurant, or a multi-day event at locations throughout Florida and beyond, the members of the TCCC believe that sharing the experience of owning America's best sports car is an avenue for building lasting friendships. Monthly meetings are held each month at Anglotti's Pizza at 130 Heights Ave in Inverness, Fl, 34452. The Meals on Wheels program, in our area, is made up of teams consisting of Oak Village Women and Sugarmill Woods Club members or husband and wife teams. This service is always in need of volunteers to help distribute meals daily to those elderly home bound clients or those unable to drive due to illness, lack of transportation or other issues. Most teams sign up to do a run once a month, with only one hour and a half of your time needed to complete the route. You may be the only contact many of our seniors see on a daily basis. The clients look forward to those friendly faces. Volunteers can be reimbursed for mileage by the county, but most of the teams donate that back to the program. We welcome players of all levels that just would like to play for fun and enjoy the camaraderie. ----------------------------------------------------Friends of the Homosassa Public Library
Lovers of books and reading should consider joining the Friends of the Homosassa Library. A non-profit group the Friends raise funds to provide materials the library cannot afford. They do so through modest membership fees and two large book sales in the Spring and Fall. The sales typically garner about $5,000 each, all proceeds going into library programs. The next sale is Nov. 15, 16 and 17 at the library. Volunteers to help with the book sales are always welcome. The Friends' Board of Directors meet at 10 a.m. the second Wednesday every month except for summer months (June, July and August). The meetings are open to the public. For more information about membership contact Diane Gapcznski at (352) 503-3688. For more information about the book sales contact Shirley Leonard at (781) 264-5098.
