Seeds never ail to be amazing! Incredible bounty can be harvested

rom what began as tiny, shriveled specks. Some beginning gardeners

regard seed starting with a healthy dose o ear, but the act is, seedsare designed to survive, thrive, and eventually reproduce.

What You Need to Begin:Soil:Seeds preer a light, airy medium that provides good air circulation and allows or eortless rootdevelopment; it should hold moisture but should not get soggy.

Containers: Seeds can be started in pretty much anything, rom recycled yogurt containers to store-boughtplastic cell packs.

Moisture: Maintaining consistent moisture is crucial to success in seed starting. The goal is to keep the soilconsistently sponge-damp; uctuating rom bone-dry to sopping wet is torture to sensitive seedlings.

Warmth: Some seeds, such as peas and other early-season vegetables, preer cool soil. Others, such as peppersand cucumbers, preer a slightly balmier climate. Most seeds germinate best in temperatures rom 60 to 75F.

Light: Ater seedlings have emerged rom the soil, they need a lot o light; without it, they grow leggytall, thin, and weak. Providing the light they want14 to 16 hours a dayis probably the biggest challenge in indoor growing.

    Saving Seeds Step-by-Step

Moisten the soil beore saving. It should be damp but not wetlike a wrung-outsponge.

Fill containers with soil mix. Tamp it down gently, leaving 1/2 inch or so o space atthe top.

Check the seed packet or inormation on how deep to sow the seed. As rule othumb, seeds can be planted at a depth o about twice their diameter.

When sewing larger seeds in containers, poke a hole into the soil using a chopstick or pencil, place one seed in, and cover it with soil. For smaller seeds, sprinkle them on top and scratch the soil slightly to bury them.

Label containers or rows when sowing more than one type o seed.

Place the containers in a warm, bright area, and wait. Some seeds germinate indays; others take weeks.

No Yard?No problem! You can garden just about anywhere, as long asyou choose plants that are suited to the condi-

tions o your site. And although you probablycant change the amount o sunlight your plants

receive, or the act that your rootop space isprone to high-speed winds, you can oten make

little adjustments that will make big dierences. You may discover that you have a lot more gar-

    dening space than you thought.

With pots, you can have perect soil. Plants

perorm best i you cater to their soilpreerences, and containers make it easy togive them what they want.

You can move pots around. With containers, you can move temperature-sensitive plants

into and out o the sun, extending their season.

Pots allow you to build a garden anywhere.Sometimes the only gardening space you haveavailable is on your ront steps or on the edge

o a driveway. Containers dont mind.

Pots reduce compaction. With traditional in-

ground gardening, it can be dicult to avoidstepping into your garden bed to sow, weed, and harvest.

Pests and weeds are easier to control in pots.Because your total garden space is relatively

small, it is easier or you to keep on top oweeding and pest control when dealing with a

    potted garden
