How to make a.... Sue Wilson Delicate Lattice Frame Tall Gift Box

  • Step 1. This workshop will continue with the tube box theme. It will show you how to make 3 other tall tube boxes to co-ordinate with the dusky pink rose & fronds card and square tube box made in previous workshops. There is a triangle box, pentagon box & a hexagon box with I have produced a printable template sheet to use when making up the striplet size boxes.

Step 2. Print off the template sheet so you can use it to create the base and lid shapes for the tube boxes. The tube box has been designed to co-ordinate with the dusky pink rose & fronds card and you can find the full workshop and printable sheets on the Creative Expressions weekly workshop blog. Cut the 3 template shapes out and the square one would just be 6.4cms square piece of card so no template on the sheet but you can make one up for ease for another project.

Step 3. Place the template on a piece of thick grey card often found in card packs when posting. Draw around the shape and then cut them out. The thicker card is used for strength on the base of the tube box.

  • Step 4. Also cut 2 sets of the shapes in foundations coconut card. Just cut the required shape if you just want the triangle tube box. But for this workshop I will show you how to make all 3 sizes of tubes boxes.

Step 5. To make the larger boxes place a piece of Foundations coconut card onto a score board in a landscape position and score down at 6.5cms, 13cms, 19.5cms & 26cms. Turn the card and then score down the full length of the portrait card at 4cms in from the left hand side of the card. For a Hexagon box you need to join another 2 ~ 6.5cms panels and with a 1cm tab. For the Pentagon you`ll need 5 ~ 6.5cms panels so you will need to add a 6.5cm panel with a 1cm tab. There are tips on how to do the larger boxes in this workshop in step 7.

Step 6. For the triangle box which will be shown on this workshop will need cut 3 ~ 6.5cm panels and a 1cm tab.

  • Step 7. When making the larger boxes score another piece of card in a landscape position at 6.5cms & 13cms. Then score another 1cm, 1cm ( 14 cms & 15cms ) and then at 21.5cms ( that is just another 6.5cms on the end of the card) trim away the excess card. Turn the card and score a 4cm depth line across what would be the bottom of the card but will now be down the side as the card has been turned.

Step 8. Trim down the 1cm and 6.5cm and turn the card over and score the lines back in place as you need the card to be turned so the tab is on the right hand side of the panel. This technique just allows you to make the pentagon and hexagon larger boxes using 2 fully scored pieces of card and the 2 and 1 ~ 6.5cm panels on this part of the scored card.

Step 9. Add one panel on the back of the 6.5cm panel on the previously made 4 ~ 6.5cm panel card to create the pentagon box & add the 2 ~ 6.5cm panels onto the other 4 ~ 6.5cm panel card to create the a hexagon box.

  • Step 10. To make the triangle just have a piece of coconut card with 3 ~ 6.5cm panels and a 1cm tab down the side edge of the card. Create the usual 4cm measurement across the bottom of the card as this will make the correct depth needed for the Sue Wilson striplet dies to be housed on the panel of the card.

Step 11.Score a line at 2.5cms in from the side edge so it creates a 1.5cm tab next to the 4cm line just made. This is just needed as the triangle box only needs a small tab on the base and lid of the box.

Step 12. Cut inverted `V` notches along the tab base and remove the corner piece on the 1cm tab right hand side of the card.

  • Step 13. Crease up all the score lines including the bottom and side tabs.

Step 14. Now lay a piece of kraft card onto the score board in a landscape position and move the card slightly in from the left hand side of the board by 2mm and score at 6.5cms. Repeat the process on each of the 6.5cms so each measurement will be 6.3cms each time, carry on until all 3 score lines are complete and finish the card with a 0.5cm tab measurement down the side. Trim away the excess card not needed by laying the white card onto the kraft card and seeing where you want the inner kraft card to sit on the finished box. This gives you the control to lengthen the box. IT`S IMPORTANT to make sure there is a overhang of the kraft card above the white card as this creates the lip for the lid to be placed onto.

Step 15. Glue the triangle kraft card triangle down the small side tab and stick on the inside of the 6.5cm panel to make the kraft card inner tube. Run a line of red line strong tape on the white outer card tab.

  • Step 16. Add some Cosmic Shimmer dries clear glue over the inside panels of the white card making sure there is no glue on the bottom tabs.

Step 17. Stick one side of the kraft card so it lines up along the top of the tabbed score line and then stick the side tab onto the next 6.5cm panel of the triangle. Turn the card and keep adding each kraft card side to the white panel as the card is wrapped around. Remove the red line tape carrier backing before sticking the final 6.5cm panel over the tab.

Step 18. Open the bottom tabs flat and add some Cosmic Shimmer dries clear glue onto each tab.

  • Step 19. Close the flaps back down

Step 20. Add the triangle kraft card into the box so it drops down onto the glued area of the tube.

Step 21. Add some more glue to the outer tabs of the triangle box and on the grey card that is showing.

  • Step 22. Stick the other white card triangle that was made using the template earlier.

Step 23. Rather than making a square box lid like in the previous workshop the 3, 5 & 6 sided boxes need to have the lid made like the base of the tube box but just shorter. You could have a long lid if your gift needed it and you would just make the base as you have just made but without the inner tube. Then place over the kraft card lip of the box. For a shorter lid use the same measurements for the base ie. 6.5cms, 13cms & 19.5cms and then the 1cm tab but cut the card at 6cms deep from the tab score line to make the depth of the lid. Adjust this figure if you would rather a shallower or deeper lid.

Step 24. Place the score lid & triangle into the rambling blossom embossing folder and pass it through the Grand Calibur using the base plate & the Spellbinders raspberry plate.

  • Step 25. Crease the triangle lid in place, gluing the side tab together before sticking the tabs down.

Step 26. As it`s an awkward shape to hold the tabs down turn the lid and press the tabs together from the inside as the Cosmic Shimmer glue will stick very quickly.

Step 27. Now add the embossed triangle onto the tabs to finish the lid off nicely. You can add another triangle on the inside of the lid to cover the tabs. This would be recommended if you had a longer lid.

  • Step 28. Place the lid over the kraft card lip of the box to complete the basic shape of the triangle tube box.

Step 29. It`s now ready for you to decorate using the Sue Wilson striplet dies. There are many dies in the striplet series and if you want to use the mini striplet dies the just use a smaller width measurement than the 6.5cms used for this larger die. These workshops were created to show you to basic needs when creating a tube box so have fun, decorate and design as you so wish.

Step 30. Remember to add a 6.5cm panel for the larger boxes and when making the lid if you make 2 ~ 6 panel sheets up you can trim one of the panels off and cut the card in half from side to side to make 2 lids from the one piece of card. Just use the same technique for making the lids up.

  • Step 31. Here are the pentagon & hexagon tube boxes ready to be decorated using the delicate lattice die along with the rose & fronds die shapes.

Step 32. Check out the Creative Expressions weekly workshop blog for the panelled card and the square tube box workshops.

    Have Fun x
