Successful deployments of ticketing solutions

I Worldwide implementations of contactless transport payment systems

Gemalto helps transport operatorsto provide and reliable contactlesspayment systems

Public transport users are lookingfor a convenient and speedyservice, this includes how they

pay for and access the bus, tramortrain, while transport operators’ wantto provide high level of services to theircustomers, optimizing their fare systemto generatead ditional revenues, have arobust ticketing system and reducefraud. Contactless technology givesboth parties peace of mind thanks tointeroperable ticketing systems thatalso help limit city congestion.

The success of the first contactlessdeploymentsfor mass transit ticketinghas led more and more transportoperators to choose this technologyforits reliability, security and ease ofuse.

Gemalto’s over 10 years’ experienceincontactless, unrivalled industrialcapabilities, worldwide coverage andcommitment to innovation make thatmore operators arerelying on us tosupply for a transport solution to fittheir needs.

Gemalto has been providing transportoperatorswith products and servicesfor the main andmost ambitioustransport deployments in the worldfrom late 90s. Paris, London,Netherlands, Santiago de Chile, SãoPaulo and China are justsome

examples of the successful integrationof Gemalto technology withinworldwide transport infrastructures.

Paris transportation gets 21stCentury smart card ticketing

Paris’ urbantransportation isreputed for itsflexibility andease-of-use. The secretis probably aunique combination of underground(Metro), extensive municipal andcommercial surface bus lines, andwide local rail service.

As the city is successfully preservingthe traditional, local flavor of theMetro, it is also continually investingto meet the ever-increasing stressesof a growing, fast-moving modern city.

Gemalto has been one of the majorsuppliersof Paris’ “NAVIGO™” projectfor cards and personalization servicessince 2000.

The NAVIGO™ pass uses Gemalto’sdual-interface (contact andcontactless) smart cards withCalypso* microprocessor technology. The card is personalized with a photoID, a name and electrical dataandthen mailed by Gemalto.

With more than 1.5 million cards incirculation and increasing fast,NAVIGO™ passes are usable rightacross the urban region’s metro, bus, and rail systems. The firstcards, launched in 2000, comprisedvarious staff passes for current andretired personnel of theRATP (metro)and SNCF (rail) and suppliers(150,000units). Implemented since 2001 toreplace the Carte Intégrale (annualpassesfor adult commuters, roughly300,000 units), the card was alsomade available in 2002tostudentseligible for the Imagine "R" passes(700,000 units). From 2006, the Parissystemdelivers monthly passes suchas CarteOrange, Mobilis, Paris Visite, and even the 10-ticket booklets. Anexpected volume exceeding 3 millionis anticipated.

Travelers go smart in London

London's PRESTIGEproject is one of thelargest contactlesssmart card initiativesin the orld, changingthe way people payfor travel on the Tube, bus, DLR andTramlink. Smart card technology hasbeen the key toTransport for London’sground breaking ticketing and paymentprogram covering the British capital’spublic transport network.

From the project’s conception in themid-1990s by the prime TranSysconsortium partners, EDS and Cubic, the smart card, branded Oyster®, hasbeen positioned as the public face ofthe new London ticketing system.

Oyster® means nomore queuing and isquick and easy to use and recharge. In fact,Oyster®is the smartest way forcustomers to travel around London.Gemalto is a key supplier toTranSys,providing over 5 millioncardsto the scheme since 2002.Since their first full deployment in mid-2003, Gemalto contactless cardshavehelped smooth urban transport forover 8 million passenger-trips a day onLondon’s public transport network.Oyster® cards are currentlyused forconcession passes, weekly, monthly, and longer period Travel cardsas well asaflexible prepaid storedvalue e-purse facility which enablesautomatic payment for single journeys. Some 16,000 smartcard readers giveOyster® card holders access to theworld’slargest and most complexurban-transport system, includingsome 273 Underground stations andover 8,000 buses.

Seamless integration of alltransport means across theNetherlands

The Trans Link Systems projectin theNetherlands is the world’s firstdeployment across an entire countryinvolving different means of publictransport. Trans Link Systems isaninitiative of five major public transportcompanies in the Netherlands:Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS),Connexxion, GVB (AmsterdamMunicipal Transport), RET (RotterdamElectric Tram) and HTM (The HagueTramways). This alliance serves morethan 80% of the Dutch publictransport market.Conducted byTrans LinkSystems and theEast Westconsortium, theprogram involves300.000to1.4 million contactlesscards for the pilot phase, out of thetotal 12 million cards to be deployed.

Gemalto was selected by Thales, partner in theEast West consortium toprovide smart cards ofits e-ticketingsolution and the associatedpersonalization services. One singlecontactless card will allow the citizento equally access ferries, buses, metros, trams or trains to travelacross the country. More than twomillion passengers per day areexpected to use the national transportonce the project is fully implemented.

SPTrans, Brazil: a leadingtransport project in Latin America

With one of the world’s busiesttransport networks, SPTrans of SãoPaulo chose Gemalto to provide acontactless solution which turned thefare collection system in oneof themost modern in the world anddramaticallyreduced theproblem offraud.

Selected in theproject, as earlyas 2002 to supply the firstcontactless cards for retired citizens.Gemalto has delivered atotal of over 5 million cards so far.

Thanks to the great success of thedeployment on the bus network, it waslater adopted for the undergroundservice in 2005.

Today over 16,000 vehicles areequipped andthere are 1,500 points ofrecharge to serve 6 million commutersdaily.
