The team behind TeamLogic IT, a successful, MA-based managed services provider, always have a plan for their clients: a solid business continuity strategy. This planning has proved valuable time and time again, particularly for one lucky customer.

One fall evening, business was bustling as usual at the Crowne Plaza Boston. The hotel’s conference center was fully booked for the day. Hotel rooms were nearly sold out and the crowd at the in-house sports bar & grille was enjoying playoff action on the flat panel displays.

According to Frank Vento, the General Manager of the hotel, everything was humming along beautifully until someone noticed a desktop in the administrative office displaying a message indicating that several computers and important files were being attacked by the ransomware known as CryptoLocker. The insidious malware was a real-time threat to the day-to-day operations of the hotel complex. The cyber-thieves were demanding a hefty ransom for the release of the hotel and conference center’s critical data. Vento immediately called the 24-hour hotline at TeamLogic.

Frank Slattery, General Manager of TeamLogic, recalled, “we received an alert that [Crowne] had contracted a virus via our remote management console and immediately saw that it was a crypto-variant. So we knew the call was coming.”

TeamLogic immediately went into gear and remotely diagnosed the gravity of the problem. A technician was dispatched and arrived at the hotel within 20 minutes. The good news is that, prior to this incident, the hotel had taken the advice of TeamLogic and installed a true backup and disaster recovery (BDR) solution, a Datto SIRIS, which meant there was no need to pay a penny of ransom to the hackers.

“In our experience, Datto has been an absolute godsend in terms of helping us quickly remediate these issues with our customers,” said Slattery. The technician deployed the Datto recovery solution and within one hour the computing systems at the hotel were fully restored and completely functional. Not a single bit of data was lost and a major business interruption was averted.

“[Crowne Plaza] was able to go about doing their business and we didn’t have to spend a ton of technical time or resources figuring out how we were going to pay a bitcoin ransom,” said Slattery.

This isn’t TeamLogic’s first run in with CryptoLocker and it likely won’t be the last. According to Slattery, “In 90% of the situations we’ve been in with customers facing CryptoLocker, we’ve been empowered by Datto’s technology to swiftly dissolve the situation. The remaining 10% of the situations, we have not.” Customers in the latter camp, without a true BDR solution, have paid hefty ransoms in order to access their critical data and avoid going under. Thankfully, Crowne Plaza Boston had taken all the necessary steps to avoid that sort of situation.
