High school bass guitarist Ian wanted to be an engineer until he started taking guitar lessons at

CMS three years ago. This summer, he traveled all the way to Boston to pursue his new dream of a

music career at Berklee College of Music’s prestigious 5-Week Summer Performance

Program. This life-changing summer experience costs thousands of dollars to attend, putting it out of reach for many families. As a member

of Berklee’s City Music Network, we were able to nominate Ian for a full scholarship, which he

received. He and his family then spent the spring working hard to raise money for our Mary Cates Scholarship for Advanced Studies, which assisted him with room and board in Boston. Ian excelled

at 5-Week and was chosen for the program’s Rock AllStar Band! Thanks to generous donations, he’s

one step closer to achieving his dream.

NEW AT CMSMake Music Day 2016 on June 21 gave CMS teachers, students, volunteers and our Glenwood South neighbors an opportunity to do just that - get together and make some music. To take part in this worldwide celebration, we planned a neighborhood jam session to engage and inspire members of our surrounding community. It ended up inspiring us, as well! Make Music Day 2017 is already in the works.

Music Technology: With grant funding from Duke Energy and the Reisert Foundation, CMS launched a program teaching students how produce and record music, preparing them for a career in music production. Four current students took part in the pilot of this exciting opportunity during our spring semester. Musical Theater: In partnership with Right On Cue Kids Theater, a new musical theater pilot program is being offered to students this fall, thanks to additional funding from Duke Energy. Budding actors will get valuable stage experience as they produce, act and sing in an on-site production.

16 INSPIRING TEACHERS CHALLENGED AND ENCOURAGED

OUR STUDENTS

95% of our faculty chose to return for the 2016-17

school year. Cellist Myriah Luke first came to CMSin middle school and now is one of our teachers.

Myriah has seven cello students while she finishes her music education degree at Meredith College.

When long-time CMS parent Veronica Kirkland offered to host a student concert at her church, a light bulb went off to launch a series of student concerts. The idea became our new Community Concert Series, hosted by CMS families to showcase students in their own neighborhoods and community groups. Veronica agreed to help pilot the program so materials could be developed to make the concerts simpler to plan. Her favorite student, son Bradford, agreed to perform on piano, and other students were recruited to be part of the program. The concert was a great success and marked yet another way that CMS is reaching into our communities to provide the gift of music.

A Special Evening with Beth Leavel raised an astonishing $30,000, providing a year’s worth of music lessons to 30 of our students! Our second annual benefit gala was held on April 14 at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. Attendees were entertained by Tony Award-winning Raleigh native Beth Leavel. Several students also showcased their talents on flute and piano before the show. As a bonus, our Percussion Ensemble provided pre-concert entertainment to spotlight our spectacular new marimba, made possible by the continued generosity of the David L. Marzetti Memorial Music Trust Fund.

The third annual Three Band Night was another great success, featuring the reunion of CMS teacher Matt Douglas’s local Raleigh band, The Proclivities, as well as special performances by John Darnielle, M.C. Taylor, Jeanne Jolly and Caitlin Cary. The CMS Rock Band kicked off the evening at The Pour House and the crowd was hopping until the wee hours. Raleigh artist Caitlin Cary donated several of her original needleprints as raffle prizes, and other artists added their own CDs to the raffle jar.

When local Raleigh institution, Harry’s Guitar Shop, moved to their new location in November, Harry offered the opportunity to staff their beverage booth as a fundraiser for CMS. Hundreds of thirsty customers and families poured in during the day and kept us busy, resulting in a substantial donation to our program.

Local artists support CMS. Acclaimed jazz pianist Lenore Raphael, along with guitarist Howard Paul, performed a master class for our students and then at our annual Donor Appreciation reception at Ruggero Piano. After sharing her gift of music, Lenore announced the additional gift of her Steinway piano to CMS! Hopper Piano also hosted a recital to benefit CMS, with Jonathan Levin as soloist on a different Steinway – one that belonged to Vladimir Horowitz. Americana band 15-501 continued to grace us with the proceeds and tip jar from their steady gig with CMS friends at Irregardless. Chamber Music Raleigh sponsored a series of concerts for CMS, to introduce students to the music of the Oak City String Quartet and the Horszowski Trio.
