A New Career

Do you love your job?

Are you in a career you love? Or, did you get so good at what you have been doing that it became your livelihood? If you are dissatisfied in your ca-reer, it could be because you are in the wrong one.

We all have a purpose for being on this planet, and you might not be living yours. Dissatisfaction occurs not because you are doing something incor-rect, but because you are not living up to your fullest potential.

You know this is the case when other career ideas have been nagging at you, and you have been wondering for a long time why you are not doing something else.

So often in life, people seem to fall into jobs because one was handy or available at the right moment. Maybe you started in one position with a company hoping to move into something you liked better later. Maybe you started life with one job and continued to do it out of inertia or because you had so many years invested in the retirement system.

No matter your current position, every once in awhile, it's time to assess whether the career you have created is the best career for you. Recognizing that there are certain economic and social realities, think about where you'd really like to spend the time of your life. These steps will help you explore and find work you really love.

Is it possible to make the change at this point in your career? You bet it is!

Top 10 Reasons to Have a Career You Love:

1. Work-related functions occupy 50% - 75% of your waking hours (more for workaholics).

Why not have those hours be at least as great as the rest of your day?

2. When you are doing something you love that fits who you are as a whole person, your true self shines through. You literally glow!

3. It would be a shame to let your gifts and talents go to waste. Everyone has natural gifts and talents. Take the time to learn what yours are and then find ways to share them with the world.

4. If you want to leave a legacy, why not create a career in which to do it?

It can be a great vehicle for leaving something behind in the world.

5. People can and often do earn decent money doing what they love (con-trary to popular belief).

You can too!

6. Having a fulfilling career means getting in touch with what is really im-portant to you. 7. When you are happy in one area of your life, it has the potential to cross over and affect the others.

8. People who love their careers are able to live more fully in the present rather than waiting for the day they get to retire.

9. Doing work you enjoy and utilizing your gifts and talents is a form of cre-ative self-expression.

10. Because you can!

How To Change Careers

Along with a new year, comes a new opportunity to make a fresh start. Here are some steps to follow as you consider making this important change in your life.

1. Believe That You Can Have a Career You Love

This might sound like a silly statement, but many people disagree with me when we tell them that it is possible to enjoy their work. They tell us they tried once to do something different, and it did not work. So, they gave up. But we know deep down that they wish for something better. Stop wishing and start believing. This first step is enough to move you forward.

2. Stop Waiting For Your Dream Job to Be Handed to You

Have you ever looked around and been jealous of people who are in their dream jobs? They all have one thing in common; they knew they were tired of being unhappy and decided to do something about it. They took responsi-bility for what was not working in their careers, and made a decision to change it. They knew that their dream job would not happen by accident, and they choose to pursue what they wanted. If they could do it, then so can you.

3. Decide What You Want

What do you want your next career to look like? Will it be in the same indus-try? Or, in different one? Will you have your own business? Or, will you be freelance so you have more time with your family and friends? (And your-self!) Right here is where most people stop dead in their tracks because they wonder how to make it work. Worry about paying bills come into their minds. Doubt about whether anyone will pay them if they switch industries, jobs, etc. circle around in their heads.

Yes, these are real concerns. But if you wait until every detail is figured out first, you will be doing what you are doing now for the rest of your life. De-cide what you want, and put it on paper. You might be surprised to see that you have just created a pretty good outline for your future.

4. Set A Date

When will you be in your new career? Yes, there will be factors that deter-mine when this actually happens, but giving yourself a specific date pro-duces something to shoot for. For example, when you set a date for your vacation, you live into that future. You make plans and arrangements so you can get away. You visualize yourself having fun and the days leading up to your trip are filled with more fun. The same thing happens in your career. You say when you will have your new career, and you put the actions in place to make it happen. It's powerful stuff, but only if you use it.

Film and Theater Make Up

Film and Theater

The professional application of makeup is so important to Hollywood films that there is an Academy Award given just for this category. The right makeup can transform an actor's looks. Make up is used to make actors look tan, pale, glamorous, down on their luck, older, younger, and even like someone else altogether. For example, a combination of makeup and a pros-thetic nose transformed the actress Nicole Kidman into the famous early 20th century writer Virginia Woolf in the 2002 movie "The Hours."

To create their designs, makeup artists consider many factors. The age of the characters and the setting and time period of the production affect the way actors and actresses should appear. Even the lighting is important when deciding what makeup to use. Makeup artists often must research the hair, make up, and clothing styles of specific time periods. Then they draw sketches or collect photos to show the designs they have in mind. Sometimes they make prosthetic devices. These items are used to change the appearance of performers. For example, artists might create a beard for an actor, or fleshy face parts to make him look older. Makeup artists also consult with directors and technicians about their ideas and designs at vari-ous stages of the process.Working with direct sales cosmetics The responsibilities for a makeup artist job in sales vary by the type of field you are in. For retail makeup artist jobs, responsibilities and schedules also vary by company. For example, some cosmetic companies hire professional makeup artists as sales associates, in which case you may have a full-time schedule. Your duties would be the same as any other retail position plus consultations- doing make up on customers to make a sale. High-end cos-metic companies will also hire freelance makeup artists. Those positions are almost always part-time, weekends with the occasional special event. Most freelance positions do not include sales responsibilities and general allow for more creativity in your work.

Fashion Makeup

Fashion

If you get a fashion makeup artist job, you might work on photographic shoots for magazines, commercials, fashion shows and personal appear-ances for celebrities as well as pop videos. Makeup artists often work regu-larly for the same publications and photographers.

The fashion world is constantly changing. You will follow the lead of the de-signers, who may want outlandish makeup, a conservative look, or some-thing never done before. You will need to stay on top of the field by reading both mainstream and trade magazines.

You will need to balance the need for bolder, brighter colors that are seen from far away from the catwalk, with the need for reasonable-looking make up up close with television and photography staff.

You'll start work on a fashion show by meeting with the clothing designer(s) and with the producer or director of the show to find out what the overall look and theme is for the show. You'll create sketches for each model in their outfits, and get the sketches approved. You'll create the looks during rehearsals, and get the director and designer's approval and input on what you have done.

The shows themselves are frenetic and fast-paced. You'll do best if you are able to keep a cool head while everyone around you is chaotic. They will look to you, not only for their makeup, but also for a bit of calm in the storm.

Television Makeup

Television

Professional makeup artist jobs in television might include historical dramas requiring careful attention to period detail and often elaborate wigs. Or you might work on a live entertainment show and be responsible for making up presenters and guests. The makeup artist is in charge of the application of makeup on the actors, actresses, and extras. The Make up Artist is also re-sponsible for preparing a makeup schedule and for supervising and coordi-nating with other members of the makeup department, including assistants, body makeup artists, special effects makeup and hair stylists.

Working in television is one of the more common goals of the make up artist jobs. It is fun work, and stable enough for the professional.

Our advice is that you first acquire experience, credits and references to put in your portfolio. Begin sending your CV and employment solicitations to the local networks that normally don't have a big budget and who are thankful for any help they can get for a low fee or no fee.

Beginning with these small networks allows you to introduce yourself to the TV world, to familiarize yourself with the top in the industry and to acquire invaluable experience—to create a good CV! It is also very important to make contacts. Last but not least, it will give you the possibility of seeing this world from the inside, so you can decide if it’s the right makeup artist job for you.

Print magazines, Catalogs and Advertisements

Print and Fashion

A makeup artist job has been part of all the print photography you see of

models in magazines or newspapers. You can start with editorial make up

artist jobs, which are a great way to gain experience. You will need this ex-

perience to understand how colors translate into color and black-and-white

print.

You can find work with a photographer to carry out model portfolios for beauty and fashion magazines. Work to create good relationships with the models and they will give you a recommendation to their colleagues and the related professionals—to photographers, stylists or designers. That is when you begin to get paid well!

Another reason for pursuing print makeup artist jobs is that you get to know the models in town and if you do their makeup well, they will recommend you to other models.

Brands in Department Stores

Department Stores

This makeup artist job combines applying makeup with sales of make up cosmetics and products. The profile of this professional is someone who is accustomed to being a makeup artist with an emphasis on social makeup

knowledge (although not all the brands require it) and a knack for sales. It is also important that you like to work with the public.

During the time in which you work with a makeup brand, you not only learn about all the products and their different uses in detail, but you also learn the specific product ingredients and different applications. The most impor-tant thing you acquire is great experience in makeup as well as credibility since you will make up all kinds of people.

Normally, this makeup artist job gives you sales skills, which is something that you can later apply to other areas of the profession. This path also will permit you to have a fixed revenue and also earn extra money if you are a good saleswoman (a quality that you need to develop) with the commissions that go with making the sales.

Finally, this makeup artist job gives you the chance to interact with other professionals of the sector by working with other makeup artists. This syn-ergy can allow you to create relationships and important contacts.

Beauty Pageants

Beauty Pageants

There are many pageants held each year on a local and national level. You can start at the local level by contacting the chamber of commerce and get-ting names of pageant directors. Then you can volunteer your services. They love this offer because it makes their pageant more professional to have you on board. After you gain experience, you can approach the next level for a paid makeup artist job, and you’ll gain a lot of recognition and new clients.

In the pageants, you can really only help the contestants with touching up their make up. There is just not enough time to give individual attention to contestants and to do their makeup from scratch. You want to make them look as good as you possibly can in the short time available. The contes-tants and parents are so very grateful that you are there to assist them. It helps everyone feel more comfortable and secure about their looks and, of course, it doesn’t hurt you to have all those people in the pageant telling

others about the wonderful makeup artists that was there when they needed it.

In addition to the publicity, pageants are really fun to do. You get to know many of the girls and you get a lot of satisfaction knowing you were part of the program. It is especially gratifying if you happen to work with a win-ning contestant, knowing you played a part in making them look as good as possible. You will also learn about different kinds of stage lighting and the effect it has on makeup.

Freelance

Bridal Makeup

In your own neighborhood, you have thousands of possible clients who need your services for weddings, events, to learn how to apply makeup or simply to look better. And if you follow this up with freelance jobs with photogra-phers, magazines and cosmetic sales, you’re on your way to a very lucrative career.

The Job Itself

The professional makeup artist's job is to interpret the makeup require-ments of clients and to produce both a creative and technically accurate vis-ual representation. This may in some cases involve very basic makeup for a TV presenter through to more complex period make up or special effects.

Depending on the nature of the job, a professional makeup artist can work alone, as an assistant to a more senior colleague or as part of a makeup de-sign team. They may work in a variety of settings: film; television; theatre; live shows; or photographic shoots.

Makeup artists also consult with directors and technicians about their ideas and designs at various stages of the process.

Before a performance or filming, the makeup artist's job is to apply founda-tions and makeup to create the effect they want. They style hair and attach wigs and prostheses. Some make up artists do special effects, such as wounds or deformities for horror or action movies. Sometimes the applica-tion of makeup can take several hours for one performer alone. Large pro-ductions usually have many makeup artist jobs.

During a performance or filming, makeup artists remain backstage to moni-tor the production. They maintain actors' makeup throughout the show or filming, doing touchups if needed. They also help actors remove the make up at the end of the show or workday.

Find a Quality Training Program

Makeup schools offer theory and practical make up courses about different styles of makeup, history, tools and their care, and may help with finding makeup artist jobs.

Check the following things about any potential makeup course or makeup school you plan to attend:

· Do the teachers have current working experience or have they been out of the field for a long time? Professional make up is a constantly changing industry and it is essential that teachers have current expe-rience with today's techniques.

· Is the curriculum up to date? Find out what the latest additions to the curriculum have been to see if current technology is included (e.g. high-definition TV, internet movies, airbrushing)

· Will the school help you look for work? The best makeup courses of-fer assistance with marketing yourself as a professional makeup artist, as well as finding makeup artist jobs.

· How big are the classes? Too many students in a makeup course means less personal attention for you.

· Talk to past graduates of the make up school or makeup course you plan to attend. If the school won't help you find them, be concerned.

Home Study

Until recently, makeup correspondence courses were of poor quality and didn’t offer current makeup techniques, working teachers, or job-finding as-sistance. Makeup distance learning was impractical, if not impossible. The courses on the market were barely visual, full of old-fashioned methods and seminars promoted by corporate publishers and lacking that proven and solid basis for teaching professional makeup to individuals.

Now there is an excellent option for completing a professional makeup school program at home in your spare time. Elite Makeup Schools of Madrid and Barcelona, Spain, offer a high-quality, newly designed program that matches their on-campus makeup courses. Tired of seeing courses with little practicality on the market and with no serious focus on the make-up

5 ingredients for your future job and business as a makeup artist 1. Low investment

2. No employees

You are the only employee. It’s your business and it’s completely under your control. By not having to contract or train people, you free yourself from all of the expenses that having more personnel incurs, and you have none of the hassles involved in managing staff.

3. Customer repetition

There is always a demand for beauty services, and as we women know, no one can make us skip our day at the hairdresser’s or stop us from buying that lotion we need so much, or from putting on makeup for that special oc-casion. Beauty products and services will always be in demand; in fact, it’s one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy. The beauty industry is growing with leaps and bounds at more than 7% a year. 4. Pleasing and exciting

Working in what you like and pleases you is fundamental if we want to live a life of fulfillment. Professional makeup is fun and exciting. Changing some-one and making someone more beautiful is very rewarding.

5. Little or no risk

You can work as a makeup artist from the comfort of your own home. You don’t have to make great investments in stock or furniture. The risk factor is practically zero.

Finding a business that offers two or three of these factors is an interesting business. Being a self-employed makeup artist can be one of the most popu-lar and profitable creative jobs that you could do.
