WN’s Family Guyby Mark Ball

A Legend in My Own MindDo my kids look up to me? Well, sure.

Why don’t you believe that?

I mean we all have our humbling moments, those times when a chink in our armor is exposed. Even in those mo-ments, I’m still Dear Ol’ Dad defender of the universe and the guy who can get snacks down from even the highest of shelves.

There was that one time I questioned how my kids viewed me. My two youngest daughters were putting on a play in the living room that caught my attention, I only happened upon it accidentally while heading upstairs to check on the baby.

While I didn’t come in at the beginning of the show, it was easy to decipher the main characters. One was “Mom” and she paced back and forth in the living room with a Barbie camera pressed to her ear which was meant to be a cell phone. She was talking frantically to someone, stopping every few laps to glare at the other character who was lying on the couch.

The “Mom” character would bark at the person on the couch who would respond with platitudes like “Okay dear… and Sure thing Honey” and then immediately roll over and begin snoring. This response was repeated over and over. Just as I started to decipher who the character on the couch was supposed to be the baby let me know that I was needed upstairs.

Sometimes I even have help appearing heroic before my kids.

My son Riley played recreation soccer this summer. Riley has such heart when he plays, and he is truly talented. The best part is that he is following in his father’s footsteps. Far be it from me to brag, but I was MVP of the Hamlin Recreation Orange Team in 1988.

One warm summer night, I was sitting on the sidelines watching Riley warm up for a game when a familiar noise caught my ear. It was the guiding voice of the greatest coaching influence of my childhood. Without even looking I knew that it was Coach Doug Kurz.

Among his many awards in my personal Hero Hall of Fame, Coach Kurz led the famous Hamlin Recreation Orange Team. While the mighty Orange were winless that season, it was still the pinnacle of my athletic career. No coach after Coach Kurz ever recognized my inner superstar, and sadly the soccer world lost a legend-in-the-making at the age of 11.

I looked around to confirm that my ears weren’t deceiving me. There on the opponent’s sideline stood my favorite all-time coach. Immediately I called my wife Leslie.

“He is here!” I whispered it into the phone as if it was a secret too good to be true.

“I’m sorry. Who is here? Are you in danger?” Leslie asked.

“Coach Kurz… you know from my MVP season…” I started to retell a story that Leslie had heard at least annually since we first met.

“I’ve got to go see if he remembers me,” I said.

“Oh, Honey don’t do anything to embarrass yourself or Riley,” Leslie said.

Her words of warning began to trail off as I was already halfway over to him. Just as I reached him, I was struck with the fear that Coach Kurz might not recognize me, as 26 years had passed since I last kicked a soccer ball.

But he did. He even called me by name. I told Coach that I was here to cheer on my son, and pointed Riley out to him. We agreed to introduce the two of them after the game.

It was a great game and Riley was all over the place making great plays. I couldn’t wait to introduce them.

We met Coach over by his car. He gave Riley all sorts of positive feedback, just like I remember from my child-hood. Coach so loves the game, but he has always loved his players more.

He praised Riley for his quickness, for the way he hustled all over the field. And then he looked at me, and I knew it was the moment I had been waiting for, to be placed on a pedestal before my boy.

“Your father was a special player,” Coach said. “In my 35 years I have never had the opportunity to coach a player as slow as him. You must get your speed from your mother.”Riley laughed. We all shook hands and went our separate ways.

When we got back in the house, Riley turned to me and asked, “Dad, can you get a water bottle down from that shelf for me?”

“Sure thing son,” I said.

Yep. My reputation is still intact. My kids will always look up to me.

Joe’s stories - old, new, mostly trueCleaning up the fieldsafter the crop harvestby Joe Reinschmidt

Saturdays in the fall often were spent doing chores that were intended to get the fields ready for the coming year. One of them was gathering and burning the vines from the tomato and potato fields. They would be gathered into small piles and when they were reasonably dry we’d burn them. Yes I said BURN-fire and smoke. It’s a no-no today.

For my parents, Joe and Anna, this was the method they had learned from experience, and in Agricultural school, which was important in controlling diseases that lingered in the vines and would be detrimental to the crops planted in those fields next year. It wasn’t a hard job and we kind of liked, as most children do, that we could “play with” fire but also had the responsibility of keeping an eye on them.

There was some fun involved, too. Besides finding and eating the occasional edible tomato that eluded the pick-ers, we could have tomato wars with the other leftovers. Ideally, you wanted a big one that was quite rotted to have the most impact on your target. Of course if they were “overdone” they would fall apart in your hand as you tried to throw them. It was sort of like a backfire. This was one time we could get quite dirty without a reprimand from Anna.

In the potato field it was a different scene. Very few of them were rotted and there were some perfectly good

ones that were missed (perhaps deliberately) when we harvested them. Those we put onto the pile of vines before lighting it and came back later to feast on baked potato. Depending on the intensity and length of the “burn” they would often be black with burned skin but inside there was a well-done tasty potato. Ideally they would have been better with some butter, but that was hard to carry around in your pocket. Salt and pepper on the other hand could be carried and we had them with us. Of course we had to remember which piles had potatoes in them, but we usually found most of them, as we stayed in the field until all fires were out.

Burning vines isn’t practiced anymore and is considered illegal by some agencies. Spraying with toxic chemicals is supposed to be better, but I wonder about it.

New hope for health and healing through Jin Shin Jyutsu®

Jin Shin Jyutsu, (pronounced “jin shin jootsoo”), an ancient healing in modality rooted in Eastern Medicine, is now available at Advanced Health Therapy Center in Brockport. While bearing conceptual similarities and lineage with acupuncture, Jin Shin Jyutsu is an exceptionally gentle, non-invasive approach that works without the use of needles. Jin Shin Jyutsu can be used in collaboration with any and all other medical treatments and/or therapeutic modalities.

A Jin Shin Jyutsu session generally lasts about an hour. It uses a gentle touch and specific placement of the hands on the body (fully clothed, lying face-up) in order to facilitate flow and harmony in the energy pathways that nourish all aspects of the body, mind, and spirit. It facilitates the body’s innate healing capacity, and is effective for both restorative and preventative care.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is currently being offered by a number of traditional medical facilities as a part of their integrative medicine programs for cancer treatment, outpatient and inpatient surgeries, and prenatal and postnatal care. In addition, Jin Shin Jyutsu can provide adjunct support for many health challenges including the following: chronic autoimmune and autoinflammatory conditions such as arthritis and lupus, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease; carpal tunnel and TMJ syndromes; migraines;

neck, back, and joint pain; depression and anxiety; stress and fatigue; allergies; respiratory problems; circulation problems; injuries; grief support; and ADHD, autism, and learning challenges in children.

If you are interested in trying Jin Shin Jyutsu, contact Certified Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner Tamara Wilcox. Tamara, an assistant professor at The College at Brockport, was first introduced to Jin Shin Jyutsu over a decade ago, and became a certified practitioner in 2011. In addition to offering Jin Shin Jyutsu in private sessions, Tamara also teaches her clients how to apply JSJ to themselves (‘self-help’) for supplemental support between sessions and for ongoing self-care. She uses Jin Shin Jyutsu with her students in the Department of Dance, and will be offering a Jin Shin Jyutsu course for Brockport students this upcoming spring semester.

Tamara is now offering a “First Session Half Off” Holiday Special. Call or email today: [email protected] or (734)277-0194 www.advancedhtc.com

Food Shelf Stockers - The Brockport Lions Club challenged its members to bring donations for the Food Shelf to its bi-monthly meetings. The membership exceeded expectations by bringing in 89 pounds of food. The Food Shelf is seeing increasing numbers of families seeking help and the Lions want to make sure there is enough to go around for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and beyond. The challenge continues at the Club’s next meeting when they hope to go over the 145 pound mark. Pictured are Lions Laurie Streb, Al Hammel, Dan Stinebiser, and Jackie Carey. Provided photo.

Opinion/Comments

Brook Field public hearing registered concernsIn response to Supervisor Paul Kimball’s letter printed November 16, 2014:

There was a public hearing on the project and every-one that expressed an opinion, as far as I could tell, was against it. We also were in the midst of an election and town board members had a chance to gauge the opinion of Clarkson residents. A majority, 3 out of 5, of our town board members voted against the “incentive zoning” for this project. Yet Kimball suggests we let the “Town” know your comments. Isn’t that what we already did with a resounding ‘NO’? Clarkson residents, the vast majority by any reasonable calculating, do not want the Brook Field at Clarkson development as presented requiring “incentive zoning.” For Clarkson Supervisor Kimball to write the letter to the editor that just appeared in the Hamlin-Clarkson Herald last week, not even a month after it was turned down by the Clarkson Town Board, and suggest that we reconsider, that maybe he needs to explain the situation to us until we finally get it, is an insult to those in Clarkson who so resoundingly already said we don’t want government money subsidizing a project that the residents of Clarkson don’t want.

If Clarkson, as Kimball suggests, may need to increase property taxes or cut services, if we don’t approve this project, only serves to highlight how poorly Kimball has led Clarkson over three decades. If we have been led into a blind alley financially, recently using an inappropriate amount of town reserves to cover on-going expenses, he really has no one to blame but himself. There are none so blind as those that will not see.

Minister honored for 28 years of serviceA luncheon held at the Orleans County Jail was

attended by several members of the Correctional Services Faith-Based Ministry. During the October 17 event, one of their own was recognized by Sheriff Scott Hess for his many years of service. David H. Ferris has been ministering to inmates since

1986. He received a plaque from the Sheriff in recognition of his “28 Years of Dedicated & Faithful Service to the Sheriff ’s Office & the County of Orleans.” While Ferris said he plans to “scale-back” his ministry, he says he has no intention of retiring completely from this calling.
