‘Tis the season - for lambsHolley family continues to breed rare sheep with great success

by Grace Griffee

Spring has finally sprung and at the Drechsel farm in Holley that means lambs and plenty of them.

Both Drechsel children, Claudia, a 10th grader at Holley Middle School/High School, and Andrew, a sixth grader at Holley Elementary School, have par-ticipated in the Youth Conservationist Program, which enables young people to experience the joys and responsibilities of conserving heritage wool sheep breeds.

Applicants must write an essay about themselves and their experience with animals, explain their interest in a spe-cific breed of sheep, and answer the ques-tion, “Why would I like to help preserve a heritage breed sheep?” They must also include a letter of recommendation from their 4-H advisor, veterinarian, teacher or clergy.

Two years ago, Claudia won Netty, a Navajo Churro, through the program. The breed is on the threatened list with fewer than 1,000 registered annually. Netty gave birth to two lambs, Elsa and Anna, last year and is due to lamb again very soon. New owners receive their ewe at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival in early May and are required to breed the ewe to a registered ram in the fall.

Andrew followed in his sister’s foot-steps and was awarded a Hog Island sheep, Reba, at last year’s festival. “He received her from a previous winner,” said his mom, Trina. “So the program tends to have previous winners give back to help continue promoting rare breeds.” The Drechsel family plans to donate a lamb back to the program as well.

Andrew said he requested a Hog Island because of the breed’s interesting his-tory. According to the Hog Island Sheep Breeders Association, Hog Island is a barrier island off the Eastern Shore of Virginia. About 200 years ago a flock of sheep was established on the island using sheep of British origin. The sheep of Hog Island evolved in response to the island’s natural selection for hardiness and forag-ing ability. Hog Island sheep are one of the few populations of feral sheep in the United States and are on the critical list with fewer than 200 registered annually.

Fortunately, the Drechsel’s friends, the Trembley family, have a farm in Albion and were able to obtain a flock of Hog Is-

lands last summer. (Follow them on Face-book at “Barnfield Farm on Johnny Cake Lane.”) Reba was sent there to breed and gave birth to one ram lamb that Andrew named Hurley. “We will probably find a home for the lamb so he can be bred with other stock,” said Trina.

The Drechsels also have Lincoln Long-wool sheep, another heritage breed that is part of the Livestock Conservancy. Hazel, one of Claudia’s sheep, gave birth to a ram lamb this spring named Basil. Andrew’s Lincoln Longwool, Juniper, had twin girls, Kate and Juliet, a week after the others were born.

In May, Andrew will be sharing the story of his sheep at the Annual Orleans County Conservation Field Days at the 4-H Fairgrounds where sixth graders from Orleans County will come to learn about various conservation topics. The event is organized by the 4-H Youth Development Program of Orleans County Cornell Coop-erative Extension. For information, visit cceorleans.org.

The Drechsel family of Holley successfully bred their Hog Island ewe, Reba, a rare breed on the Livestock Conservancy list with fewer than 200 registered annually. G. Griffee photo.

Extra Mile Award presented - Hamlin’s 2014 Extra Mile Award was given to Dave Maynard, Hamlin Dog Control Officer in recognition of his tireless dedication serving as the Town of Hamlin Dog Control Officer. Due to his love for these animals, he has gone above and beyond normal duties, expanding the dog shelter, creating a Facebook page, organizing events like adoption days, fundraisers, pet parades, and supply drives. He has also developed relationships with The Mia Foundation, PAWS, Rochester Animal Shelter and dog control officers in other communities. The love and time he devotes to the animals and the shelter has made a positive impact on the residents and pets not only in our community but in the whole United States, according to Extra Mile Committee members. Shown above is Michelle Johnson (Extra Mile Award Committee Member), Dave Maynard and Eric Peters, Town of Hamlin Supervisor. Provided photo.

Seymour Library breaks ground on Local History Roomby Grace Griffee

Seymour Library staff and volunteers, along with local dignitaries dug shovels into the ground on April 18, the last day of National Library Week, at the site of what will be the Local History Room addition. The addition will house artifacts and materials from the library’s current collection. New display cases will offer a space to local history museums and organizations within the three communities – Brockport, Clarkson and Sweden – to display artifacts archived in their collections. It will provide a space to house presentation equipment to facilitate lectures and programming. And it will have a book scanner and digital media to encourage the community to not only read about local history, but also interact with it.

The Local History Room is made possible by the New York State Education Department’s Public Library Construction Grant, which is funded through aid allocated by the New York State Legislature, and through community member donations.

“This is well-spent public money,” said Senator Joe Robach. “We have a great library system in Monroe County and this addition will serve the community for a long time to come.”

The Local History Room is due to be completed by mid-October in time for the Seymour Library Annual After Hours Fundraiser, held this year on Saturday, November 7 at 7 p.m. The event features music, hors d’oeuvres and wine. For more information, visit seymourlibraryweb.org.

Hawks fall to Atticaby Warren Kozireski

Holley sophomore Anna Brasted had two RBIs and two runs scored, but Attica plated 16 runs in the top of the seventh inning to blow open their 35-10 win in varsity softball.

The Hawks scored four times in the first inning to take their only lead of the game. Brooklyn Bartholomew and Tabitha Swift began the rally with singles before Brasted drove in the first run with a single. Madison Papaj then reached on an error scoring both Swift and Brasted. Bri-anna Vanameron followed with an RBI single for the fourth run.

Attica scored six times in the second inning to take a 10-4 lead, but the Hawks bounced back in their half of the inning to keep the game close.

Bailey Papaj reached on a one-out error and went to second on a fielder’s choice. Swift had a clutch two-out RBI single to center for the first run of the inning. Brasted reached on an error putting runners at first and second before Madison Papaj also reached on an error allowing Swift to score and leaving runners on the corners.

Madison Papaj and Brasted then pulled off a double steal with Brasted scoring and Papaj later scoring on a throwing error as she advanced to third on the throw home.

After Attica made it 14-8 in the third, the Hawks scored their final two runs in the bottom of the inning. Brian-na Barber reached second on an error and went to third on a single by Bailey Papaj, who then stole second. Bar-tholomew knocked in Barber with a single and Brasted’s two-out single later in the inning plated the final run of the game for Holley.

Attica scored 21 runs over the final four innings to drop the Hawks to 0-3 in the young season.

Holley Board adopts proposed budget with zero tax increaseDuring its April 13 board meeting, the Holley Board of

Education adopted a $23,300,000 budget for the 2015-16 school year. If approved, the plan will result in zero tax levy increase to taxpayers, according to a district spokes-person.

When Holley residents go to the polls on May 19, they will be asked to vote on two additional propositions. The first is for the purchase of two full-size school buses, one wheelchair bus and one 30-passenger school bus at a cost not to exceed $355,000. The second authorizes the district to raise $108,072 to be used in support of maintenance and operations of the Community Free Library. A public hearing on the budget and propositions is scheduled for

May 5 at 6 p.m. in the Board Room located in the District Office.

In addition, residents will be voting on three Board of Education seats. The three-year terms of office of current board members Mark Porter, John C. (Jack) Welch and Anne Winkley expire on June 30, 2015.

Additional budget information will be posted on the dis-trict website at www.holleycsd.org/budget.

Holley residents can vote on the school budget and Board of Education election on Tuesday, May 19 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Holley Middle School/High School Foyer.

At a ceremony held in March, 20 students from Byron-Bergen Jr. High School were inducted as new members of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Speakers included NJHS Vice President Kolbi Brew who congratulated the newest members on their accom-plishment. A candle was lit to signify each quality in

the members’ lives. Brockport 2015-2016proposed school budget hearing May 5

The Brockport Central School District Board of Education will present its proposed budget for the 2015-2016 school year at a public hearing on Tuesday, May 5 at 7 p.m. in the Fred W. Hill School Cafetorium.

The ballot includes two propositions: •Proposition 1 - The $75,946,267 proposed budget projects an estimated 0.89% tax rate increase. The budget was balanced utilizing $2,975,000 of fund balance and reserves and a tax levy increase of 1.89%, which is less than Brockport’s tax levy limit (cap) of 2.48%. •Proposition 2 - Bus Proposition of $1,200,200 includes purchasing 13 buses and trading in 10. The state aid ratio is 90%, making the net local share $9,232 per bus.

Voting on these propositions and election of one Board of Education Trustee position will be held May 19, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Technology and Training Center, Building 800, on the Brockport Central School District campus.

Guest speaker to discuss history of gardening and garlic growing

On Wednesday, May 6, the Clarkson Historical Society will present a talk by Brockport resident and local gar-dener Gary Skoog, who has lived in Brockport with his wife, artist Lori Skoog, since the 1960s. Both are well known in the community.

Many of us know how to garden, but most of us don’t know much about its history. Gary has also been involved with the Greater Brockport Development Corporation since its formation in 2002, whose overall goal is to pro-mote and market the greater Brockport area to prospec-tive businesses, and to promote tourism to this region. This has also included involvement with historic preser-vation in a village that has excelled in preserving its ar-chitectural heritage as The Victorian Village on the Erie Canal.

The presentation will be at 7 p.m. at the Clarkson Acad-emy, 8343 Ridge Road. It is free and open to the public.

Please note: the previously scheduled talk on the Civil War for this date has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.

Chiropractic and the World Series

When the San Francisco Giants clinched their World Series championship last year, a select group of professionals was part of the team. That team was the Giants’ staff of doctors, trainers, physical therapists and chiropractor Michael Gazdar. As the world champion Giants prepare to defend their title in the 2015 baseball season, a full staff

of health care experts will be on hand to support them and try to keep them healthy and performing at maximum efficiency. And that includes chiropractic treatment.

Most professional teams, along with individual athletes from golf-ers to motocross and rodeo riders, recognize the value of chiropractic treatment as a way to keep elite athletes in peak condition. For some athletes, the prime time for chiropractic treatment is the day before a competition and then again shortly before the event to make sure all soft tissue, joints and nerves are in optimum condition. The Profes-sional Football Chiropractic Society estimates that during the course of a 16-game regular NFL season, NFL team chiropractors administer between 16,000 and 27,000 treatments to league players.

If elite professional athletes recognize what a chiropractic tune-up can do for their already highly tuned bodies, think what a chiropractic adjustment might do for your game, whatever it may be. Talk with a chiropractor about how you might benefit from a treatment.

The Poppy Program is important recognition

Each year during the month of May, American Legion Auxiliary members distribute red crepe paper poppies in exchange for donations. The donations assist disabled veterans, their families, VA hospitals and starting this year active military in need of assistance.

The poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war and represented the hope that none had died in vain. The poppies are made by disabled veterans.

Look for auxiliary members around the village of Spen-cerport and in other towns and villages. Wear your poppy on Memorial Day, and throughout the month of May.

Brockport Rotary guest speakers discuss sled hockey project - Karen and Darrin Zyra receive club banner from Rotary president Cindy Blair. The two presented a slide program on sledge (or sled) hockey, developed in Sweden for disabled athletes in the 1960s. It is a paraolympic sport. The Zyras are working to develop a program in the Rochester area where eventually teams of different age levels would compete. At this beginning stage, everyone including some able bodied folks, are enjoying the game. Using modified sticks and sleds, players are quite agile and speedy. The Zyras, who live in Spencerport, are looking for financial sponsors and other kinds of support from the local community. Contact them at [email protected] for information.

Village of BrockportTRASH COLLECTION

NOTICEAs students prepare to move out at the end of the year, re-fuse left behind is an issue that Village residents have dealt with on an annual basis. This year, the Village is taking a proactive stance, to ensure that the community will remain safe and sanitary during the move out period.

Beginning Monday, May 12, 2015 Village Code Enforcement Officers will begin patrolling neighborhoods to make note of addresses where refuse items are being piled up. At the end of each property’s regular garbage collection day, the Village of Brockport Department of Public Works will be making rounds to clean up any items left behind. Please note that this is not a free pick up. The property owner will be billed for the collection of any refuse by the Department of Public Works. To ensure this does not take place, contact your refuse col-lection company to verify what they will pick up and make sure any items left behind are brought back from the road.

Please keep all refuse in containers with adequately sealed lids and ensure that all refuse is placed neatly at the curb for collection. Do not place any refuse in the road or block any sidewalks. Refuse may not be placed curbside more than 24 hours prior to scheduled collection. Electronic items will not be picked up by refuse collectors.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Building/Code Enforcement Department at (585) 637-5300 Ext. 14

C-C student photographer chosen for summer internship

Student photographer Abby Gutowski (photo below) will be spending a portion of her summer documenting day-to-day activities at Writers & Books’ SummerWrite youth workshops. The Churchville-Chili High School sophomore was chosen for the photography internship, usually reserved for college students, on the basis of her impressive resume, presentation and portfolio.

SummerWrite is a nine-week program that offers over 70 camps for young people, ages 5-18, focusing on the art of reading and writing. As the program photographer, Gutowski will work for several hours, twice a week, from June 29 to August 28. Her photos will be used on social media and in a variety of marketing communications. Gutowski is excited about the opportunity. “I’m particu-larly interested in pursuing a career in photojournalism. This is a chance to learn and get experience, while I am doing what I love.”

Gutowski’s work has been shown recently at Image City Photography Gallery’s “Through the Student Lens” pho-tography show, and at the 2015 Rochester-Finger Lakes Middle & High School Art Exhibition, hosted by RIT at the Bevier Gallery in February.

Unique agricultural community would reach out to special needs adultsby Grace Griffee

A little over a year ago, Jennyrae Brongo, owner of Brongo Contracting and Supply, would tell anyone who would listen about her vision to create a sustainable living environment for special needs adults. She is now making that vision a reality.

Brongo is leasing her uncle Robert Brongo’s 55-acre farm, located on Manitou Road along the Erie Canal, for Homesteads for Hope, a non-profi t community farm. The property will initially offer adults with autism and other developmental disabilities a place to learn how to grow their own fruits, vegetables and fl owers and sell them. “We’re starting out slow,” said Brongo. “This is just phase one of a three phase project.”

So far, a group of 25 volunteers gutted the existing greenhouse and Cornell Cooperative Extension donated a new plastic enclosure for it. Harris Seeds has donated seeds for the project as well. Once the greenhouse is complete, Brongo’s attention will focus on the existing 18th century, 5,000 square feet barn. “The barn is structur-ally sound, but needs restrooms, electricity, heat, etc.,” she said. The plan is to transform the building into a “sustainability center” that would include a farm stand, café and class-rooms where students can receive job training and a place to interact with the community. “The property’s proximity to the canal will make it an inviting place for community mem-bers to stop and enjoy what the farm has to offer,” she said.

According to Brongo, because the property was a working farm and that is how it will con-

tinue to be used, no permits are needed yet. That may change down the line as she works to make the rest of her vision come to fruition. Phase two of the project includes purchasing the existing

house on the property and transforming it into administrative offi ces, an activities of daily living (ADL) center and holistic medical center. The ADL center will provide students with a space to learn how to care for themselves and the health center will offer holistic and naturo-pathic approaches to the treatment of autism.

Kimble nets 100th career point for Cadetsby Warren Kozireski

Junior Shawn Kimble registered his 100th career point with a second quarter assist and garnered six points overall on four goals and two assists to help Hilton defeat Brockport 19-7 in boys lacrosse.Harold Juergens, who joined the 100-point club earlier this season, began the scoring for Hilton off a pass from Nick Cutrona.

After Brockport’s George Glynn tied the game at 1-1, the Cadets bombarded the Blue Devils net scoring ten unanswered goals by ten different players during the remainder of the second half.Pal Burns began the run off an assist by Adam Williams followed by an unassisted goal from Zakk Mount.

Juergens found Mike Gouger to make it 4-1, Kimble intercepted a pass from the goalie and scored at 8:58 and Williams found the back of the net off an assist from Ricky Cocilova at the horn ending the fi rst quarter.

Justin Goodrich scored a man-up tally from Juergens early in the second quarter before Kimble earned his milestone assist on an Austin Varga goal at 3:53.

Juergens scored his second goal of the contest and Ian

Lemcke also scored - both on assists from Williams - to make it 11-1 Cadets at halftime. After Justin Goodrich scored on a long-range shot just 19 seconds into the second half, Brockport fi nally found some offense in scoring three of the next four goals.

Tyler Stiefel and Chad Tobey scored a little over one minute apart and Glynn netted his second of the contest off rush to the net at 6:08 to make it 13-4.But a man-up goal by Hilton’s Tyler Ferrel and a nice give-and-go with Zeus Doser feeding Juergens just seven seconds apart pushed the lead back to 15-4.Tobey scored his second of the game for Brockport late in the third quarter while Glynn completed his hat trick and Austin Myers fi nished the Blue Devils scoring in the fourth.

Goodrich fed Teddy Alvarado while Ryan Streb and Lemcke also netted fourth quarter goals for the 8-3 Cadets to complete the scoring.Hilton is in a tight race with Churchville-Chili in the race for fi rst place in Monroe 3.Kimble leads the Cadets with 44 points while he and Juergens were tied atop the team goal scoring chart with 23 each after 11 contests.Read more sports on page 2 of the Wrap.✹ Another information-filled special section delivered to over

Evans notes there were those in the planning stages

who questioned the “Morton” concept, worried that

the library would be the same as the shed next to it.

She reassures skeptics that the library building is an

“unbelievably strong wood frame building with a steel

shell.”Evans says that in addition to the exterior wood

frame, the interior is sheathed with thick plastic for

moisture and wind protection.

“That sheath is held in place by interior 2x4s - not

furring strips - for further strength and durability,” Ev-

ans says. “Both the roof and the ceilings will be insu-

lated to maximize the energy conserving factor.”

Those energy conservation measures qualify the li-

brary to take advantage of New York State incentives

and grants for energy factors installation, Evans says.

“I spoke with a librarian at the Scio, NY, library in

the southern tier, and she said that their 3,800 square

feet library, also built by Morton, is cheaper to heat

than her house.”

The library is being constructed on land directly

south of the Hamlin Town Hall on Route 19. The town

received a state grant of $466,000 as well as a $600,000

donation from the estate of Margaret McGrath to help

cover the cost of constructing the new library.

“The most amazing part of this project and building

is that it is a gift to the community,” says Evans. “In my

opinion, the most valuable property that Hamlin owns,

by far, and has multiple uses.”

Currently the Hamlin Public Library is housed in the

old Bauch’s IGA plaza and has expanded over the years

to include several former storefronts.

Furry friends visit Northwood

library for reading fun --

Students at Northwood Elementary School got a paw

up on reading over spring break thanks to a Tales for

Tails reading event. Volunteers brought in their K-9

Good Citizens to listen to children read. Seventeen

dogs and over 50 students participated. “The event

tied in with National Library Week and gave students

whose families were not traveling during the break a

fun activity to do,” said Library Media Specialist Julie

Rapp. Students could choose any book from the

library and any dog to read to. Tales for Tails is a pro-

gram that takes place in libraries across the country

as a way for students to practice their reading skills in

a “judgment-free zone,” can serve as a reward for all

of the hard work the child has done to improve his or

her skills and fosters positive associations with read-

ing. At right: Marissa Lay, a third grader at North-

wood Elementary School, reads to Cagney, a rescue

dog owned by DeVon Smith, during a Tales for Tails

event held during spring break. Provided photo.

Hamlin’s new library becoming reality

by Kristina Gabalski

Construction work on the new Hamlin Public Library

is progressing rapidly as the weather begins to improve.

(See photo of building below).

Library Board of Trustees President Sue Evans said

the severe winter weather and frozen ground during the

months following the December 2013 ground breaking

did slow down the start of the project.

“We had them keep the ready-to-deliver materials in

storage until the weather broke. Once the actual con-

struction began, it progressed really quickly. The shell

went up in just a couple of weeks,” she says.

At this point, Evans says the projected fi nish date for

the library is mid-August. “The exterior is pretty much

complete and the electrical and plumbing are being in-

stalled right now,” Evans says. “The feel of the space in-

side is huge. The potential for multiple uses by this com-

munity are amazing, but will basically guarantee that

Hamlin will have a library for many years to come.”

Uniquely decorated eggsfestive symbols of the seasonby Kristina GabalskiFree lance writer, Garden ColumnistWestside News Inc.

I have been collecting hand-painted wooden Polish Easter eggs for proba-bly more than 15 years now. Easter is my favorite holiday and I especially love decorated eggs. I was drawn to the brightly colored Polish eggs with their bold designs at the Broadway Market in Buffalo where thousands are on display at various vendors in the weeks before Easter. The displays themselves are amazing and it’s al-ways fun to search for the perfect egg to take home. Almost no two are alike and because they are made of wood, they will last for generations.

The eggs symbolize spring, re-newal, fertility and eternity and the colors are also symbolic. The “pysanky” egg decorating tradition goes back centuries and can vary by region. Ukrainian eggs, for example, are decorated with wax and dyes and are more intricate. They are also typically painted on a blown-out real egg.

There are varying sizes of the Pol-ish eggs. Some are mini-size and we are now seeing a larger size which is slightly bigger than a real chicken’s egg.

I typically purchase two to four eggs each spring at the Broadway Market. Two for adding to my collec-tion, and two for some of my children who collect, to put in their Easter baskets. The medium-sized eggs sell for two-for-five dollars and the larger sizes we see now are a little more expensive, two-for-six dollars, or four dollars each. Currently I have about two-dozen eggs in my collection.

I keep my collection on display all year in a lidded glass container in the kitchen. I enjoy putting it on my hutch in the dining room in late winter as a very first sign of spring. During Easter I will sometimes move the eggs to bowls, platters, baskets, and other containers so they can be seen more clearly. I have antique clear-glass salt cellars which are in a circular shape and footed and they work well for displaying a single egg. Originally, the salt cellars would have been part of each place setting for dinner parties. Mine are about 1-1/4 inches in diameter and I’m sure my grandmother would be surprised at my newfangled use for them as a decorated egg holder. Not sure if that’s an example of “up-cycling” or not, but they are still being used with love.
