In 2014, Lutheran World Relief sent 408,245 quilts to 19 countries, including Armenia, Iraq, Jordan, Nicaragua, Philippines, Serbia and Tanzania. The organization focuses on long term solutions to poverty and emergency operations, such as helping with recovery ef- forts after the Nepal earthquake. “The quilts go to people who have nothing and fulfill a basic need,” said Kane. In addition to being a cozy, clean bed cover, the quilts are used as a baby car- rier, tied around a mother’s back; a market display, spread on the ground and piled with vegetables; a sack for transporting those goods to market; a sunshade; or a shawl. “Our hope is that the recipients will feel the love of Christ through the warmth of our quilts,” said Kane. Top, Carolyn Hurlbutt (left) and Lois Kane hold one of the quilts the Quilts for Christ volunteer group creates for those in need around the globe. “It’s a great crew and we work really well together,” said Kane. For nearly a decade, a group of about 15 volunteers have been churning out over 60 handmade

quilts a year and then turning them over to Lutheran World Relief so that they can be sent overseas. Handmade quilts have long been collected and cherished - and are pricey to purchase - but these wom-en think nothing of creating these

works of art, boxing them up and donating them to people around the world.

“It’s like an old-fashioned quilt-ing bee,” said Lois Kane, who heads up the Quilts for Christ group. Volunteers work on the squares at home and then the quilts are assembled during two monthly meetings. “We have a meeting in the afternoon and then one in the evening for those who work during the day,” said Kane.

Working with donated fabric, the squares are stitched together in coordinating colors and pat-terns with the only criteria being that they measure 60 x 80”. “The mission isn’t fussy about how they look, but our ladies are,” said Kane. Sheets are purchased for the backing and huge rolls of fi ber-fi ll for the fi lling.

Before the fi nished quilts are boxed up, a dedication ceremony is held during which all of the quilts are draped over the church pews and blessed.

This year, instead of transport-ing the quilts to a site in Down-town Rochester, St. Paul’s Church served as the drop off location for churches in the Rochester area,

Buffalo area and everywhere in between. Collectively, around 1,400 quilts were packed into a large truck that was headed to the Lutheran World Relief warehouse in Baltimore, Maryland. “We have a spacious parking lot and good storage, so we’re hoping to serve as the drop off in years to come,” said Kane.

In 2014, Lutheran World Relief sent 408,245 quilts to 19 countries, including Armenia, Iraq, Jordan, Nicaragua, Philippines, Serbia and Tanzania. The organization focuses on long term solutions to poverty and emergency operations, such as helping with recovery ef-forts after the Nepal earthquake.

“The quilts go to people who have nothing and fulfi ll a basic need,” said Kane. In addition to being a cozy, clean bed cover, the quilts are used as a baby car-rier, tied around a mother’s back; a market display, spread on the ground and piled with vegetables; a sack for transporting those goods to market; a sunshade; or a shawl.

“Our hope is that the recipients will feel the love of Christ through the warmth of our quilts,” said Kane.

Living a healthy life with a serious illnessFamily says early diagnosis is key to managing young son’s T1D

by Maggie Fitzgibbon

Hudson Proia is an energetic, friendly seven-year-old boy who likes to play tag with his friends, ride bikes and play basketball. Looking at Hudson, one would never guess that this Spencerport child has an autoimmune dis-ease called Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).

Hudson was diagnosed with T1D when he was 18 months old. His parents, Joe and Amanda, noticed his vo-racious thirst and how they were constantly changing his diapers.

“Hudson was drinking large amounts of fluids and my dad noticed that he looked withdrawn,” Amanda. “We just could not keep him dry,” Joe added.

Amanda mentioned their concerns to their pediatrician. Various tests were run; blood and urine test results noted some abnormalities.

“The tests showed unusually high sugar readings in both his blood and urine. The doctor suspected diabetes,” Amanda explained. “He told me to go home, pack a bag and get to Strong Hospital right away.”

Tests in the emergency room confirmed the diagnosis. This family spent three days at the hospital as a team of doctors, nurses and a dietician educated Joe and Amanda about this disease. A plan was developed on how to care for Hudson.

“I took prescriptions to the pharmacy to get filled and was given bags and bags of insulin and hundreds of nee-dles. This was beyond overwhelming when we realized that we needed to administer this medication to keep our son alive,” Joe explained.

Testing and administering Hudson’s insulin was a learned process for this couple.

“It is very mathematical and based upon his carbohy-drate count. There is an equation for everything he eats,” Joe explained. Amanda added, “We portion and tally ev-erything he eats, divide by the ratio and figure the amount of insulin. We prepare and administer the injection.”

At 22 months, Hudson was fitted with an insulin pump. This device is a small, programmable, computerized cath-eter that is taped to his body that calculates and releases rapid-acting insulin between meals and overnight. While this device has helped with administering frequent injec-tions, the family lives a regimented routine. Meals are well balanced and carefully planned. Hudson is tested multiple times while at school and another seven or more times both before and after school. A rapid blood test indi-cates where his insulin levels are. Bolus injections are ad-ministered after every meal, even at school. An alarm in Joe and Amanda’s bedroom alerts them if Hudson’s insu-lin level is low and if a bolus is needed. Spikes and drops in his insulin have occurred without any reason and these emergency situations required immediate action.

“I sleep with one eye open,” Joe said. “Every day, we hope and pray that nothing happens,” Amanda said.

As Hudson’s primary care giver, Amanda is on call at all times. They rely upon two trusted family members as alternate caregivers when the need arises. But the couple works together to make family life as normal as possible. Play dates are usually held at the Proia’s home. Hudson plays baseball, basketball and the family skis together.

“We don’t limit what he can do. We work to help him own up to his responsibility for his health,” Joe explained.

The couple also has another son, Anderson, who is four years old. As of now, Anderson has not shown any signs of having T1D.

“I am nervous to have Anderson tested. It’s not un-common for siblings to have this same disease,” Amanda said.

Living with this illness is a challenge but this couple has learned that advocacy plays an important role is keeping Hudson well. Amanda is in constant communication with Hudson’s teacher, principal and school nurse at St. Law-rence School. She volunteers in his classroom and attends class field trips. Amanda and Joe serve on the board and numerous committees for the local chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

“Early diagnosis is key to managing this disease. We need to raise awareness about T1D. There is no cure but we have two research programs happening at the Univer-sity of Rochester,” Joe explained.

Hudson understands his disease and hopes others do, too. He recently gathered some diabetes materials and in-formation and made a presentation to his classmates.

“I want to help them stay healthy! I want my friends to understand what I go through, why I have to visit the nurse and watch what I eat,” he said.

Walk for a cureType 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a lifelong disease that can occur at any age. While many people diagnosed with T1D live healthy lives, it is important to know that there is no cure. Research and awareness are vital to finding new treatments and eliminating this dis-ease.

The Rochester chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will host the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes on Sunday, May 17 at Rochester In-stitute of Technology. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the one-mile walk begins at 10 a.m. To register as a walker, form a team or for information, visit the website at walk.jdrf.org, or contact Lisa Swindon at 585-546-1390 or [email protected].

Plan ahead if you want to try straw bale gardeningby Kristina Gabalski

If you want to try growing your vegetables in a straw bale this year, remember you need to work to condition the bale before you plant it - about 2-3 weeks ahead of planting time.

You can plant the bale with seeds or transplants, but it’s important to set the bale out a few weeks before planting and keep it well watered so the inner straw will begin to break down. Experts recommend adding three cups of organic fertilizer - blood meal, compost, and cottonseed meal are three examples - every other day before water-ing to carry the fertilizer down into the bale.

Conditioning creates a moist, nutrient-rich rooting en-vironment in the bale.

The best straw to use is wheat straw and make sure it is straw and not hay - hay typically contains lots of weed seeds.

It’s recommended that the bale be placed with binding strips on the side to make it easier for water and fertilizer to penetrate - but the process will work either way. Make sure your bale or bales are placed in a sunny spot where they can be easily watered.

Also, give the bales a chance to cool before planting - if they have heated up during the conditioning phase - just stick your hand in the bale to check. When you are ready to plant, dig out a section of straw and add compost or high quality potting mix on top of the straw and gently water the bale before planting.

Keep the bale well watered as it will dry out quickly. Mold/mushroom growth on the bale itself is normal.

If your plants need support, place stakes at either end of the bale and use them for stringing up support, or can place the bales near a fence or shed to help with support.

The bale will continue to decompose during the garden-ing season. What’s left can be used next year as a source of organic material to build up your garden soil - as long as the plants you grew stayed healthy. If there was any sign of disease, dispose of both the plants and the straw.

Marina and restaurantjoin Arrowhead’s offeringsby Terra Osterling

Arrowhead Golf Club, a three-decade fixture three miles west of the Village of Spencerport, has entered its second season under new management. Brian “Smitty” Smith took over as part owner and Gen-eral Manager of the golf course in January 2014, and Arrowhead is poised to unveil more beginning with the 2015 season, and not just for golfers.

The 18-hole course provides 4,172 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 66, and is considered a mid-sized, or ‘ex-ecutive,’ course. “This is an established course,” says Smitty, a course care pro-fessional who has worked at golf courses since he was a teenager. “We did a lot of work last year to improve conditions over-all by removing trees, enhancing the turf, and bringing the greens and tee areas up to top condition.”

Many mature trees remain to make Arrowhead a great place to learn, says Smitty, while still being challenging for longtime golfers. “Play time is shorter, and you don’t have to hit the ball too far, but your short game will be challenged on our greens,” he says. The course also features ponds, and the area’s only golf cart creek crossing via a covered bridge.

Arrowhead prides itself on being a golf course for all ages and level of play. Their youngest member is Shannon, age 13, who Smitty describes as a ‘very good golfer.’ Joe, age 91, golfs nearly every day. “We’re non-intimidating and very family oriented to offer a great value,” says Smitty, “You don’t need to be a member to golf at Ar-rowhead, and we welcome everyone – kids, beginners, and all paces of play. We make it a point to treat everyone in a welcoming way.”

Newly opened at the end of April is The Erie Canal Pub at Arrowhead, an addition to the local restaurant scene. Completely

renovated this winter, the bar has new chairs and tables, carpet, tile, light fix-tures, and oak bar top. “People will really see a difference when they come in,” says food and beverage manager, Kim Francis. “We want the restaurant to be a place peo-ple like to visit, golfing or not - we’re fam-ily friendly and fun!”

The full service restaurant is open seven days a week, offering a full menu of pub staples, soup, salads, hot and cold sand-wiches, plus entrees like steak, chicken cordon bleu, lasagna, meatloaf, and mac-aroni and cheese. Pies, cheesecake, and brownies are baked on site.

A snack bar window opens at 10 a.m., and a picnic pavilion is located along the Canal for al fresco dining. The restaurant will be open year round, a plus for both Canal path cyclers seeking refreshment by crossing over the nearby Gallup Road bridge, and snowmobilers using the trail that borders Arrowhead’s parking lot.

Situated along the southern bank of the Erie Canal, Arrowhead Golf Club also has a marina on the canal basin adjoining the parking lot. Thirty newly renovated docks and a boat launch open when the Canal is filled for operation. Boaters need not be golfers to launch from the Arrowhead ma-rina. Paddlers are also welcome.

New this year is canoe and kayak rent-als, for $15/hour, $20/2 hours, $30/4 hours, or $40 for a full day (first-come, first-served; call for availability). Launch your own canoe or kayak for free. “Come out for a paddle, then stay for our scenery and a bite to eat,” suggests Smitty.

Arrowhead Golf Club is open seven days a week, dawn to dusk. Prices range from $10 to $17 for nine and eighteen holes, re-spectively. The public is welcome for mem-bership and play. Leagues also welcome. Located at 655 Gallup Road, Spencerport. Course conditions and more at 585-352-5500 and arrowheadgc.org.
