New radio station puts Hilton in the spotlightby Kristina Gabalski

Residents of the Village of Hilton now have their own, tailor-made, on-line mu-sic/news/information and sports radio sta-tion.

VillageRadio.Net recently began broad-casting in cyberspace and is the creation of 30-year plus broadcasting veteran Rick “RJ” Jordan.

He says VillageRadio.Net will do what radio does best - serve the com-munity. “Rochester stations are in the ‘broad’casting business, but we’re in the ‘narrow’casting business. While they have to generate programming with the largest appeal to an entire region, we have the luxury of not having to do that.”

The station is targeted towards parents of children who play school sports and plays “Hilton’s Greatest Hits.”

“I like to call it ‘oldies for Generation X’ -- we focus on ‘80s and ‘90s hits,” Jordan says. The songs are ones that got the most airplay in the area during that era and in-cludes songs no longer making the playl-ists of local ‘terrestrial’ radio.

“We like to say, ‘Not some Rochester ra-dio station’s version of the music you grew up with -- these are Hilton’s Greatest Hits,” Jordan says.

In addition to music, there is local in-formation twice each hour in the form of “What’s Happening” updates and “Com-munity Billboards.”

“Any community member can email us info for the ‘What’s Happening’ updates, while ‘Community Billboards’ are de-signed to actually be voiced by community members,” Jordan says. “Anyone at a lo-cal, non-profit or community organization can call the station to be recorded reading their announcement over the phone, or they can record their announcement using the voice memo app on their smartphone, then email it to us to be aired. We also post info for some of the bigger events on our website.”

The station is seeking community vol-unteers to produce their own content – anything from weekly or daily commu-nity news features and daily high school sports, to reading daily Bible verses.

“We’re open to suggestions,” Jordan says. “I’m also seeking churches that would like us to air their worship services.”

Starting September 5, VillageRadio.Net will broadcast the entire schedule of 2015 Cadet Football games. The station has a play-by-play person confirmed to call the varsity games, but Jordan says additional volunteers are needed to call games, in-cluding play-by-play for Cadet varsity bas-ketball this winter.

Jordan has worked at more than a dozen radio stations around the Northeast over his three decades-long career - includ-ing working as program director at market leading stations in Syracuse and Portland, Maine. Locally, he was heard on air at 98 PXY, Legends 102.7 and WCJW.

“I recently left my radio career to re-turn to the record industry, as a record promoter for a Nashville-based company, so radio has gone from my career to my hobby, which I enjoy from the comfort of my home,” he says.

Jordan says that after moving his family from market to market, it was time to put down roots. He says broadcasting Hilton High School sports is an example of local radio at its best.

“Someone listening to a terrestrial sta-tion in Gates or Webster would have little interest in listening to Cadet Football, so it makes no sense from a ratings/revenue perspective for those stations to air the games. For us, it makes perfect sense,” he notes. “Local programming is our most valuable and unique asset.”

Additionally, a tower and transmitter are no longer necessary components of a radio station.

“Most homes now have more laptops, desktop PCs, and mobile devices than they have radios,” Jordan says. “Thanks to 4G and wifi, plus bluetooth in automobiles, residents will be able to easily listen to the station. I don’t know many folks who walk around with a radio in their pocket, but I know plenty who carry a smartphone. It will be easy for them to take VillageRadio.Net along with them.”

Note: To become involved in the station, contact Jordan at [email protected]. To stream Village Radio on your laptop or desktop, visit www.villageradio.net and click the “listen live” button. To download mobile APPS to stream Village Radio on a smartphone or tablet, click the “Mobile Apps” tab on the navigation bar.

Rick “RJ” Jordan says VillageRadio.Net will do what radio does best - serve the community. “Rochester stations are in the ‘broad’casting business, but we’re in the ‘narrow’casting business” he says of his home-based station. Provided photo.

Fair Election Practices campaign kicks-off

The Fair Election Practices Campaign began on August 12. This campaign was first established in the 1970s to promote issue-oriented and civil campaigning among candidates for public office. All candidates have been requested to sign a pledge to that effect. The Fair Election Practices Committee (FEPC) was established to hear complaints from those who feel their opponent has violated the pledge.

This year the Pledge Signing/Press Conference will be on Tuesday, September 8 at noon in the Atrium of the Monroe County Office Building. Those candidates who have signed or wish to sign the Pledge are welcome to attend.

The League of Women Voters/Rochester Metro Area (LWV/RMA) and The Interfaith Alliance of Rochester (TIAR) are encouraging all candidates for public office to run positive, issues-oriented campaigns. Candidates have been asked to sign a Pledge and all signers can be found at lwv-rma.org. The Pledge List is regularly updated.

If a candidate violates the Pledge, a complaint can be filed and the Hearing Panel will hold a hearing. All deci-sions will be sent to the media and will be posted on the League website. The FEPC documents can be found at the League website.

Carli Lloyd named Hickok Belt award winner for July

Carli Lloyd, midfielder for the United States Women’s National Soccer Team has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of July 2015. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA). The voters selected Lloyd based on her tournament-leading performance at the 2015 Women’s World Cup. Lloyd led the U.S. team’s victory over Japan in the World Cup final, scoring three goals in 16 minutes. Overall she tallied six goals and one assist during World Cup play and was given the Golden Ball Award as the tournament’s most outstanding player.

Other finalists for the month of July in order of how the NSSA voters ranked them included: Serena Williams (tennis), Zack Greinke (baseball), Mike Trout (baseball), Kyle Busch (auto racing), Novak Djokovic (tennis), Zach Johnson (golf), Jordan Spieth (golf), Carlos Gonzalez (baseball) and Lexi Thompson (golf).

Her selection as the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of July 2015 recognizes Lloyd as “the best of the best” in professional sports for the month and makes her the sixth candidate eligible to receive the overall Hickok Belt® Award for 2015, joining Tom Brady, James Harden, Jordan Spieth, Bryce Harper and LeBron James.

Fires took their toll on Hilton’s Main Street50th anniversary of the 1965 Great Fire of Hilton marked in Septemberby David Crumb, Hilton HistorianPart one of two

Some say Hilton is the most burned down village in Western New York -- if not all of New York -- for its small size.

For the first 75 years of the Village’s existence from around 1800 – 1875, life was tranquil. Hilton, then known as Unionville, was a quiet trading center and home to retired farmers. Buildings on Main Street were composed of general stores, homes, a church, and a hotel, most all built of wood in a colonial and Greek Revival style of architecture.

The Rome Watertown and Oswego Railroad was being built from 1871 - 1876 and when it opened, its arrival changed everything. New businesses opened quickly to accommodate the new bustling economy that the railroad brought to town. Most of these new establishments were also built of wood, which added to the already existing inventory of wooden structures.

Most of the Main Street fires of record occurred from 1874 - 1911 when there were nine major Main Street fires. All six corners of the business sector were destroyed during this time. Electricity did not come to the Village until 1909 when the Hilton Electric Light Co. was organized by J. E. Cooper, A. B. Fraser, and M.D. Holbrook. Prior to 1909, candles, oil and kerosene lamps, and wood and coal stoves provided lighting and heat. Most of the recorded fires occurred due to accidents involving overturned oil lamps, overheated chimneys, and rapid combustion of wooden buildings and contents.

Hilton Fire Department organizedHilton’s Fire Department wasn’t officially organized until after the incorporation of the Village in 1885. By this time, two corners of Main Street had already been devastated by fire.

Only with the help and cooperation of village residents forming a bucket brigade could a building be saved, and

usually these attempts proved futile and dangerous. The North Parma Fire Co. was officially incorporated on October 31, 1889. Later in 1897, J.E. Cooper took a leadership role and began the organization of the Hilton Volunteer Fire Department, an organization still very active and very much an integral part of the Hilton community today.

Hilton’s Main Street FIres(Taken from Hilton- U.S.A. by Leith Wright, 1985).• 1874 – Sunday May 10: Bates Hotel and Tavern – Southwest corner of Main Street. Consumed by fire were a hotel, a tavern, two shops, four homes and four barns. (Two of the houses and barns were on the east side of South Avenue.)• 1877 – September 8: First Baptist Church (located on the north side of Main Street, 50 feet west of Hovey Street.) This was the 1830 church edifice originally built on top of South Hill about where today’s Water Tower stands. The early settlers thought the village would develop on the hill, but when in 1854 it appeared that Main Street was the developing trading center the 40 X 50 foot timbered pegged church was moved at a cost of $800 down the hill and across the frozen ice on Salmon Creek to its Main Street location.

A fire started in a furniture store above David Demarest’s wagon shop next door. Fire quickly spread to the church. All the community’s efforts through a bucket brigade could not save the building. The bell in the tower came crashing down on Main Street and smashed into numerous pieces to the horror of the townsfolk. Those pieces were later recast into a new bell for the new First Baptist Church located on West Avenue (today an apartment building.)• 1895 – May 9: The Wright Block (first flatiron block) – located on the corner of South and East Avenue. Fire started in the Coleman Sister’s Millinery Shop. Several businesses and two frame homes were lost. The Village Hardware, Hilton’s oldest commercial building, was scorched on the north side. Evidence of this fire was noted

Fraser Block Fire - 1903

in 2012 when the building was being renovated.• 1901 – February 18: Horton General Store (corner Lake Avenue and Main Street). This building built in 1836 was the Village’s first general store. It was owned by a succession of storekeepers, the last being Fred Horton. A small early residence east of the store as well as two barns also went down in this fire. William Nimon and his family were occupants of the home and escaped only with the clothes on their backs. They lost everything in the fire and had no insurance. Three horses also perished in this fire.• 1903 – July 28: Commercial Hotel (present site of M & T Bank). This building started out as an 1830 vintage residence for the Ira Foote family farm, which included all the land north of Main Street and bordering East Avenue. The building was later purchased by Justice Hovey, and during the exciting Hojack days was converted into a hotel and tavern for the railroad crews. At the time of the fire it contained several businesses including Mr. Hovey’s funeral parlor in the rear. Dr. Eaton’s Dental Parlor and Boots and Shoe Store located next door, and Allie Goodno’s Harness shop were all destroyed.• 1903 – September 7 (Labor Day): First Fraser Block. This block was composed of two buildings. One was the old Freewill Baptist Church moved from its former location on Lake Avenue where the present Hilton Baptist Church stands and a building constructed later by the Fraser brothers. The two buildings composed the block and ran 135 feet east and west on Main Street and 80 feet in back. Fire started in the hardware store (originally the old church) basement. The Evening Times of Tuesday, September 8, 1903 reported:

Fire ate up the Fraser Block at Hilton yesterday afternoon causing a loss of $35,000. They have insurance to cover half the loss. Only by the excellent work of the Hilton and Spencerport Fire Departments was the rest of the village saved. The efforts of the local citizens generally were equally responsible for the checking of the flames, for they formed bucket brigades and covered dangerous places that the fire companies could not reach.

The fire started at 9:30 o’clock in a basement used by the Fraser’s but which was under the rear end of Taber’s Hardware store. Germ Elliott nearly lost his life. Elliott went to the basement to draw a pint of varnish for David Cosman. He found

the cellar under the Taber store pretty dark, and he lighted a lamp, which he set about four feet from the half barrel of varnish. This barrel had not been opened in 4 years. He began to draw a bottle of the liquid and almost instantly was enveloped in flames. His first move was to try and shut off the flow of gas which time had accumulated in the varnish barrel. His right hand and arm up to the elbow were burned raw. He escaped with his life.

The village seemed doomed as high winds were blowing burning fagots across Main Street and igniting buildings. Also the buildings to the west were in peril. Wet blankets were placed on the walls of nearby buildings and the community bucket brigade helped save the village. Henry Cosman’s Optometry and Jewelry Shop were also consumed in the fire. Cosman was able to save his entire stock.

Fraser Brothers were in business the next day selling merchandise saved from the fire in a tent located at the rear of the burned out store. A newly constructed general store would open the following March. Construction took place in seven months.

• 1903 -- November 8: The Merritt Block (south side of Main Street - site of the auto repair garage.) The fire started in a laundry in the Merritt Block, it took Henry Cosman’s new Jewelry Store, and it swept through the third floor of the Piggott Block (Hilton Hotel – southwest corner of Main Street). The Clio Lodge of Masons meeting rooms along with the Parma Grange and K.O.T.M were all destroyed. The first two floors of the hotel were saved and later rebuilt as a two-story structure.

The three 1903 fires devastated three of Main Street’s corners in a matter of five months. Total losses of the three fires amounted to $55,000.

End of Part One

Special program planned for Sept. 212015 is the 50th Anniversary of the Great Fire of Hilton. Not an event to celebrate, but certainly an event to recall. The Parma - Hilton Historical Society will present a program to remember this tragic event and recognize the firemen who bravely fought the fire.

The program is scheduled for Monday, September 21 at the Hilton Firemen’s Exempt on South Avenue. The program is free to the public and begins at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. A commemorative calendar has been created and will be available for sale following the program.

Firefighters work to extinguish the 1965 Great Fire of Hilton. A special program will be held in September to commemorate the 50th Anniversary.

Heyen’s new book combines art and poemsIn June one of America’s best-known authors, Joyce

Carol Oates, tweeted her followers: “Remarkable new gathering of poems by William Heyen -- Crazy Horse & the Custers. Surreal, soaring poetry and fantastical art by DeLoss McGraw.” Another tweet soon followed: “A fe-vered imagination has created Heyen’s Crazy Horse & the Custers -- poems that read like snapshots of a vivid American past still living.”

Brockport poet Heyen’s poems about the lives of Oglala warrior Crazy Horse from his boyhood on the Plains to his death at Fort Robinson in 1877, and George Armstrong Custer from his West Point and Civil War experiences to his death at the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn, had made their mark before. His Crazy Horse in Stillness (1996) received the Small Press Book Award, and was praised by Larry McMurtry, author of the Lonesome Dove books, as “a powerful book of poetry showing that the imagining and reimagining still goes on.”

In fact, Oates had described that earlier book as “a fan-tastic meditation that only Heyen might have dared - lyr-ic, tender, appalling heart-rending, unique.” Poet Aaron Kramer wrote at the time, “Heyen [is] our century’s poet of memory and conscience. No reader of Crazy Horse in Stillness can fail to see how powerfully he keeps fulfilling that sacred mission.” And Leslie Marmon Silko, perhaps our most famous Native American author, wrote: “The old spirits don’t bother with just anyone; usually, poets who try to invoke the indigenous spirits of the Americas fall short. With Crazy Horse in Stillness, it’s as if the old spirits of the Great American Plains took possession of William Heyen and ‘rode’ his poetry on a journey of a thousand years into the past and into the future.”

And now, two decades later, Silko has responded to Heyen’s new book, Crazy Horse & the Custers, with an-other eagle whistle endorsement: “Now the cycle of poems is complete and encompasses the history of the Americas. In Crazy Horse & the Custers, Bill Heyen’s poems flash across glimmering quantum plains to illuminate fierce truths about the invasion and the eventual retaking of the Americas. I smile every time I think of this book.”

Heyen’s 1996 collection was published by Rochester’s BOA Editions. Crazy Horse & the Custers, which se-

lects from that book and includes 128 new poems, is published by Nine Point Publishing in Maine, but there re-main Rochester con-nections. This new book’s cover bears a painting by Okla-homa artist DeLoss McGraw that is in the permanent col-lection of Memorial Art Gallery. Thirty-two other paintings by McGraw in re-sponse to Heyen’s work appear in this book. When many of these were first exhibited at MAG in 2000, Director Grant Holcomb wrote that McGraw’s paintings, “with their deep-ly saturated grounds of Prussian blue, ultramarine and black, bespeak a melancholy and darkness that is part of the American experience.”

Heyen, the author of more than 30 books, is a retired Professor of English/Poet in Residence at The College at Brockport, former Senior Fulbright Lecturer in American Literature in Germany and Guggenheim Fellow and recip-ient of awards from the NEA and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, winner of the University of Rochester’s Andrew Eiseman Award and the Literary Artist of the Year Award from Writers & Books.

Upcoming is a limited letter-pressed edition of baseball poems -- on the Babe (when a baby, Heyen bounced on Babe Ruth’s knee), Mickey, Billy, Casey, and Whitey. Also upcoming are a volume of selected and new Holocaust poems called The Candle (Heyen’s Shoah Train was a finalist in 2004 for the National Book Award) and a third volume of the journal he has been keeping since he was 24 (he’ll be 75 in November).

Remembering Gaze Realty team’s Slo-Pitch victory

Almost 40 years ago, a softball team that I played for accomplished a most amazing feat -- winning a “one of its kind” -- a Slo-Pitch World Championship!

In September of 1975 the United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association, led by local USSSA leaders Frank and Al Ciacca, host-ed the first ever “Class C” World Cham-pionships at Scottsville’s Athletic Softball

Complex. Sixty-four teams from all over the United States (the furthest being from California) entered this event as the U.S.S.S.A. previously had only a “Class B” World Championship.

Gaze Realtors of Brockport stunned this strong field by winning seven straight games and in the process upsetting pre-tourney favorites, Price’s Restaurant from

Virginia, in the semi-finals 6-4.Gaze was the first team from Rochester

and New York State to win a USSSA Class C World Championship as more Roch-ester teams would win in the years that followed in various divisions from Classes A,B,C,and D.

The Gaze team was led by future Roch-ester Softball Hall of Fame members Har-ry Tufano, Max Robertson, and Rick Page. National ASA and USSSA Hall of Fame member, Tommy Castle, even umpired the final game of Gaze’s most surprising run to the 1st Class C Championship.

Max Robertson (OF) was named MVP of this event and teammates Bob Webster

(2B) and Dave Thomas (P) were named to the All World Tournament team.

On Thursday, August 6, Gaze Realty owners Jim, Sue and Jack Gaze hosted a long overdue picnic to celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of Rochester’s Slo-Pitch Softball’s most unlikely champions. Nine of the original Gaze members enjoyed an evening of laughter and reminiscing of that terrific weekend of almost 40 years ago. Each member received a commemora-tive polo shirt and championship ring.

Ogden townhouses/apartment project gets preliminary OKby Kristina Gabalski

During a long and unusual meeting, members of the Ogden Planning Board August 13 gave preliminary site plan ap-proval to Green Wood Park, LLC, to con-struct 62 townhouse units and 14 apart-ment buildings (eight units each) in a development to be located near the north-west corner of Whittier Road and West-side Drive.

The vote - at the end of a meeting of more than three hours - was split: 4-2, in favor, and came after a initial vote of 3-3. Board member Linda DelRegno changed her vote after being reassured by devel-oper Don Riley of Green Wood Park LLC/Mark IV Development Corporation, that her concerns would be accommodated be-fore a vote on final site plan approval.

DelRegno said she was concerned over the number of townhouses in particular. “It’s too dense,” she said and requested

that townhouses planned for the edges of the development be eliminated.

“We will re-work it ... pulling away the townhouses,” Riley said of the site plan.

Members Mary Lou Hetzke and Tom Coburn cast the two no votes in the sec-ond vote.

Hetzke said the development could mean 400 more people residing in the neighborhood. “Four hundred people in a residential area is out of character,” she said.

Riley noted the development complies with the town’s Comprehensive Plan.

The preliminary approval was given with conditions - including that the devel-oper must work with adjacent landowners in regard to landscaping along the perim-eter of the project, and must also address concerns raised by town officials.

Town Engineer John Freel and Highway Superintendent David Widger expressed concerns over drainage issues, but Freel

Natalie Aylward and Nicholas Coon were chosen for the Kiddie King and Queen of the Hilton Fireman’s 2015 Parade. They are pictured with Chief Steven Carter. Provided photo.

said those issues could be addressed with the engineer of the project.

During a public hearing which preceded the vote, all 16 people who spoke were de-cidedly against the project, citing traffic volume increases, concerns over drainage, loss of mature trees and privacy and light pollution from streetlights in the develop-ment.

“This is not the neighborhood all of us bought into,” one resident of Westside Drive said.

Residents who spoke live in the Whitti-er/Westside/Allendale area. Evelyn Riaza noted that many families have lived in the neighborhood for years. “They made Ogden what it is today,” she said. “This is so many apartments in such a small space. Securi-ty for families will be affected. Please take that into consideration.”

Another resident of Westside Drive said he has had accidents trying to back out of his driveway due to the already high traffic volumes in the area. He said it can take him several minutes to back out of his driveway on the way to work and addi-tionally was concerned about the housing development backing up to his home. “I don’t want to look at peoples’ townhouses. I don’t want to see anybody behind me,” he said.

Town officials said the density levels are

within town limits and Planning Board Chair Gary Parker noted the developer has provided a traffic study which con-cluded that traffic at all intersections with the development (at Whittier, Westside and Allendale) would continue to operate at an acceptable level with an increase of three seconds added to the normal delay. He explained that developers must im-prove drainage in the area as part of the project.

“For those who would rather view the wild,” he said of those concerned about townhouses which would back up to their properties, “I can understand.” Chairman Parker added that the developer will add landscaping to ease the change from an open, natural area to one that has hous-ing.

Planning Board Member Marc Robinson, who voted yes, said there are already simi-lar developments in the town. “We have approved several with the same criteria in Ogden. It isn’t new for us,” he said.

The project is expected to come before the Ogden Zoning Board as developers say they plan to request variances to re-duce set-backs in the front for townhouses, something they say will help to pull the buildings farther away from neighbors adjacent to the perimeter of the develop-ment.
