TRANSCRIPT
This two-day workshop will feature presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities to support the implementation of data analytics initiatives. The focus will be on subsurface case studies that demonstrate improved decision-making leading to concrete business results. Attendees will see presentations from E&P operators, industry professionals, and technology suppliers that will focus on subsurface development, production, and optimization.
Although data analytics tends to focus on technology and coding, key success factors associated with integrating people, business processes, domain expertise, and data analytics tools will be discussed.
How does data analytics currently fi t in the E&P business? • Can we move from being descriptive to predictive? • How do we leverage data analytics to better focus human creativity and ingenuity? • How do we accelerate the innovation cycle?
Who We AreSPE is the largest individual member organization serving managers, engineers, scientistsand other professionals worldwide in the upstream segment of the oil and gas industry.

Did you Know…The SPE Canadian Educational Foundation is the successor entity of the Petroleum Society’s 50th Anniversary Educational Trust Fund, established in 1999, and of the SPE Canadian Educational Trust Fund. The SPE Canadian Educational Foundation (SPECEF) provides scholarships annually to post-secondary students who have indicated a desire to make a career in the Energy Industry. SPECEF also supports science fairs and other programs
that encourage middle and high school students to consider the Energy Industry as a career choice. To date, since 1999, well over $300,000 in scholarships and funding has been granted. The governance structure of SPECEF provides the fl exibility to create new programs, scholarships and energy educational initiatives that will benefi t members of SPE in Canada. Good data is the foundation for analytics, machine learning and more broadly strategic decision making. Most E&P operators struggle with data viewing it as an expense rather than a competitive asset. How do we utilize the data that we have to its maximum potential? Join us for a discussion about the storage, management and preparation of data for deriving insight and prediction of outcomes in complex systems and reservoirs.

1030–1200Session 2: Exploratory Data Analysis and Inferential StatisticsSession Chairpersons: Danial Kaviani, Suncor Energy
Chris Chalcraft, Chevron Canada Resources
Exploratory data analysis (EDA) is the key step in any data analytics project. By applying diff erent single and multivariate statistical analyses and proper visualizing of the data, EDA will form focused questions leading to hypotheses and defi ne the forward path of the project. In this session, we will also cover inferential statistics that address evaluating diff erent hypotheses based on the data and the number of samples required (in both time and space) to validate them.

1530–1700Session 4: Predictive Analytics – The Past is the Key to the FutureSession Chairpersons: Jeff rey MacDonald, Shell Canada
Patrick Stanley, ConocoPhillips
The previous sessions covered the questions on what happened and why it happened. Predictive analytics is the next step to answer what will happen. Questions such as “how much EUR uplift is expected for a 30% increase in proppant placement?” or “when does a well expect to liquid load?” can be answered. Presentations will help to demystify predictive analytics and showcase examples of its use in business today. Pitfalls and trade-off s between the methods available will be covered along with how statistical models and physical models can co-exist to help improve confi dence in predictions.
