The Blacks’ Organ Vol 8, June 1, 2012

Greetings and welcome to Volume 8 of Substandard, the Blacks Organ, for season 2012. Highlights this

week include some reminiscing from the B*stards of 2002, a tirade from coach Tyro and confirmation

that the new scoreboard is actually working….never doubted it for a second. Thanks as always for your

70S DAY AT BOB NEIL # 1 This week is scheduled as 70s day at Bob Neil 1 as the A/B grade take on Port Districts, who have been

a great rival in recent times in their current form and were also one of the more successful clubs back

in the 70s (and prior) as Semaphore Central. Like the 80s day earlier in the season there is, thankfully,

no great science to this day, simply a day for those that played back in the golden era of the 70s to

come out, reminisce about the way things used to be and Bob willing watch the Contract Killers

continue on their good form. And if you can find any Blacks get up from the era bring that along as

well.

Gilly and the Kats-a*se are also getting a crew of Blacks & Red Light past players from the 90s together

so it should be a good day down at beautiful University Oval.

ROUND 7 REVIEW

4 out of 7 = 57% P1, that'll do given a tough round of games. Aussie Bob and the Contract Killers

headed up the hill for the first but unfortunately not last time this year to take on Mudbury at the

Mudheap. The Killers were in control all day and ended up winning in a canter, the only stress of the

day for coach Aussie came when Cool Hand Luke sidled over to the bench halfway through the third

with what appeared to be another injury but it seems as though he was just a little on the sore side

and bored, so crisis averted (for now).

The Non-fighting Irish won a terrible game of footer that so annoyed coach Spud that he carried on

where the King left off last week and flew into a fit of rage kicking over anything within reach...imagine

if they lost.

The C-Bombs had a magnificent win against the previously undefeated Sir Douglas Mawson Lakes,

thanks primarily, according to those freaks on the Div 6 footy forum, to the greater input into the

coaching of the team from runner Bok Choy....unlikely I say! The Drunken Cowboys battled valiantly

with Malcolm Blyth simply impassable at CHB despite the fact the opposition had 19 scoring shots and

won by 31 points. Well he was impassable until he had to leave for a meeting halfway through the last

quarter anyway.

The Chardonnays kept it close with a very cranky Broad in the late game at Bob Neil 2, eventually

succumbing by 3 goals after drawing within a point in the last, whilst the Scum out of nowhere belted

A Broads View by 88 points in the early game, Pauly Lewis noting that at age 31 he was the rookie of

the forward line featuring boom Recruit Saving Private Ryan and a returning Cam “Blue Loo” Bryson

(bobneil.com profile photo below). The B*stards were a little short on manpower and lost by 6 goals

gaining only 1 Sandy Cockburn Point against Phos Williams at Phos' Farm – I suspect they won’t be

short this week as they take on the Spooners at home and then travel to Arnie’s place in Walkerville

for their annual bbq.

MELBOURNE & SYDNEY FUNCTIONS As mentioned previously we are looking to hold functions around all of the capital cities for our

interstate members. We have scheduled the following over east.

Sydney – 16th

of June at Sydney University

Head along to the grudge match between Sydney Uni, coached by ex Black Roger Moten, and the UTS

Bats, home to famous ex Blacks Bryan Eagle, Demi Moore and Hollywood Haslam amongst others. The

day will be hosted by the Big Dub himself, Wil Honner, with free drinks put over the bar for all paid up

AUFC Members. Should be a super day of footy and a great opportunity to catch up with the Sydney

chapter.

Melbourne – 24th

of June at the All Nations Hotel in Richmond

Due to the fact that alcohol most strangely can’t be consumed at Uni Blacks, nor any other amateur

league matches, in Melbourne we’ve had to think about another function for the Melbourne chapter.

On Sunday the 24th the Crows are playing North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium in a twilight match and

we’ve put together the following schedule for our Melbourne based members:

1:00 – lunch at the All Nations Hotel with special guest speaker John Harms. John is a writer,

broadcaster on the ABC and lover of all University Sport. He is the publisher and contributing editor of

The Footy Almanac and footyalmanac.com.au. But really, he wants to lunch for Australia. His other

books include Confessions of a Thirteenth Man, Memoirs of a Mug Punter, Loose Men Everywhere,

Play On and The Pearl. All attendees will also receive a complimentary copy of The Footy Almanac.

3:30 – Head on down to Etihad Stadium for the Crows V North Melbourne game with a free ticket

available to any of our members who need one.

Cost still to be determined but it will be substantially subsidised by the club for paid up members and

sponsors. It is, however, open to anyone so spread the word.

B*STARDS CIRCA 2002 Whilst we have 70s day this weekend the B*stards circa 2002 thought this type of concept was far too

mainstream and instead initiated Pet Day in round 18. Below you can see captain Pauly Lewis running

out with his dog (there is another one obscured) and there was also a gold fish in the esky. They lost

by 119 points believe it or not.

Earlier in the season here is a photo of the same B*stards team warming up by rolling down the hill as

the Sinners go through their final paces with the 5 star handball drill.

BOB NEIL PHOTO OF THE WEEK Slater had the number 356 tattooed on himself under the mistaken impression this was his Test cap

number - in fact, Brendon Julian was the 356th player to represent Australia; Slater was number 357.

He later had this number changed to 130 - the number of legendary figure Bob Neil, who mentored

him through his crisis.

The Contract Killers take on Red Light Districts in what should be a super game of football at Bob Neil

1. The Red Light mob were touted as premiership favourites earlier in the season and have some

pretty handy players on the park so it will be a tough contest for our lads. There were no major

injuries to report from last week so don’t anticipate their being many changes to a team that is

travelling quite nicely at present.

Its 3 v 4 as the Non-fighting Irish look to consolidate their spot at the top of the ladder. They will

unfortunately be without their best player, Sammy “Poodle” Pittman, for the rest of the season after

he broke his leg last weekend. We wish Sammy all the best with his recovery.

The C-Bombs travel north and then north and then just a dash further north to take on the Unholy

Trinity in Gawler as they look to continue their strong form from last week, whilst the Drunken

Cowboys will be up bright and early (well early anyway) to make the same trip and take on the top

team in what will be a tough challenge.

The Chardonnays and Scum both travel to the Largs North Lockup to take on North Haven for Idiots

and will be keen to establish themselves in the finals race. The B*stards are at Bob Neil # 2 against the

Silver Spooners in what used to be the Spooner Derby (more Mercedes Benz than at a German car

show according to Chocka) but I’m not quite sure how many spooners are in the B*stards team now??

JUNIOR MERCHANDISE Bridgwood, Bridgwood and Dimarzo modelling the latest in Blacks merchandise, the junior Blacks

Guernsey which is in a variety of sizes to suit ages 3-10 (the little Dima one is a homemade version).

Saturday arvo behind the bar in the long room. Slightly inappropriate sponsors for kids merchandise (a

brewer, a winemaker and a pub) so we might change that slightly for the next run!

GREYS PREVIEW – FROM WOLVERINE

Round five sees a little confusion reign. We were supposed to play the Mid North at Reynella but upon

calling them to discuss venue change they informed me that they were no linger playing us and that

we were now playing Blackwood. I questioned the pres of the association and he said he did not send

me an email. Never mind. I guess they just assume we will steam roll whoever we play.

On that though. I am not sure we will be quite so comfortable this week unless we get a good number

out to play. We have some notable exclusions this week through injury and family stuff. Chloey and

Ickey are out due to injury and Scotty Hartwig got trumped by his mother in law. So lets show a sign of

unity and get some numbers there to fill the holes left by these outstanding athletes. Micky Lamprell

is still going to play even though he told me he is "scarred physically and mentally" from the trip to the

Riverland.

MATCH REPORT OF THE WEEK – B*STARDS Two match reports this week, first up Tyro’s very reasonable tirade about wizards and then in order to

inject some semblance of football the A grade report from Trimmers. As an aside, the only wizard I

know anything about is Brenton Binder, one of the great lower grade tap ruckmen of the late 90s. Try

and track him down for a membership Book!

Three weeks, three losses. Pretty bloody average football to put it lightly.

Stones Man went to the first year player Bob Neil Gray, even though Rocky was awarded the bottle on

the day. Rocky reminded the coach on a Sunday drinking session that he didn't deserve the award,

rather Seb's hit on the PHOS ruckman that defied physics with the smallest and slower Bob Neil Gray

hitting the bigger and faster PHOS ruckman down onto the ground....maybe it had something to do

with the elbow that was perfectly angled at the big man's crotch that did the damage.

Anyway, not too much interesting to say apart from everytime we fail to put together a full team we

lose. The three matches we have won we have had the full roster, so it's up to the boys to get out and

support the B*stards.

Anyway we look forward to this weekend as we have the Annual team BBQ, this year at Arnie's place

as Tyro's missus says 'Hasta la Vista" to the boys at Tyro's BBQ last year, "I'm not cleaning up you're

sh*t again" she says!

The boys are organising some sort of wizard drinking game. As I stated to them earlier, when did

wizards become cool? This Harry Potter stuff has gone too far and the club is full of 1990's babies that

are all soft and gooey because they were raised up on "give everyone a fair go", the phrase "anti-

bullying" and Harry-f*#king-Potter. When I was knocking about when these kids were being born

(1990-1993) I was in the midst of a solid Catholic education, plenty of graphic violent imagery and

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, if we weren't watching the CRT tele, we were playing cartridge

computer games on the Nintendo. The likes of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Double Dragon

come to mind. This type of upbringing is what develops hard footballers! It's no coincidence that the

years when the AUFC started failing from Div 1 (2007) was when the first of the Harry Potter effected

school boys were entering the club.

Back to the wizards - all I can remember about wizards from school were the loser kids that sat in the

library all day and played, wizard cards....what were they called? Hold on Google will know - "wizard

card game" 10th entry in Google - Magic Cards, yes! The Magic Card losers liked wizards and they

didn't like football, if they did, they were worse than me.

So I say, less wizards, more violence and bullying, it's the only way we will get back into Div 1. Trimmas

ban all Harry Potter readers! Even better, ban all novel readers, they're book-smarts aren't going to

get us anywhere.

MATCH REPORT – CONTRACT KILLERS A week after a hard fought and stirring victory it was going to be difficult travelling up to Modbury.

They’re always competitive on their rather spacious home deck with the fine young fellows on the far

hill giving their Hawks plenty of inspirational encouragement and the opposition some choice words of

wisdom. These facts along with the understanding that only the most dedicated Blacks supporters

were expected to make the trip to the ground beside the Gully Gusher Waterslide,* would make this a

danger game.

*Note: the Blacks support was quite good actually – and much appreciated.

The first few minutes of the match didn’t seem to have the intensity of the past couple of weeks, or it

may have just been the fact that AMac, his sidekick Crouchy, Seb and BD were displaying all the poise

in the world. The Modbury defence looked to be struggling to match up on Bater, Rohdey and George

and if not for some inaccuracy in front of goal the game could have been nearly beyond doubt at the

first break. Our ability to work back into defence and then spread quickly when we won the ball, split

them open a couple of times. Bater’s work-rate and tackling pressure was first class and he had plenty

of mates.

The second quarter saw more of the same early, before we started to overuse the ball a little too

much, but we then managed two very quick goals to really put the foot down. AMac and Scoppa were

having a field-day across halfback and our centre square clearances were clean and clinical.

To Modbury’s credit they had a bit of a crack to begin the second half. I was pleased to see us absorb

the pressure well and then proceed to dominate proceedings. Sharls had the ball on a string, running

off half back like a hungry thief from the bakery and set up two great goals – one from 50 off his own

boot and the next, to Bater who put his left foot practise to good use when he hit Rohdey laces out on

the lead. Sharles was so dominant, in fact, that a Modbury player, getting sick of watching the goals fly

over his head, gave him a rather late, blatant elbow to the head. This resulted in a downfield free,

another goal and a 10 minute spell for Modbury #11. By now the score was 12 goals to 1. We then

missed a couple of sodas and the umpire missed a blatant head high hit on GH-W in the goal-square.

Unfortunately we then actually stopped applying pressure, missed three consecutive tackles and they

kicked 2 goals. Proving that it doesn’t matter who we are playing, if we don’t work defensively, we’ll

concede goals.

The last quarter turned into a bit of a farce for a few different reasons, but I was pleased to see our

midfield maintain their work-rate until the end. Rohdey celebrated the day by slotting 3 last quarter

majors and Will Paynter finished the game full of running.

A pleasing result. We amazingly find ourselves on top of the ladder after being bottom just over a

month ago. If we keep working to improve we can stay there. It’s now purely up to us.

WHAT A SCOREBOARD Told you it was a great scoreboard. Lets hope it can back up last weeks stellar performance when

there is actually a crowd of more than family Reid & Dima in attendance.

And just to prove that it actually displays the score as well
