TOPIC: CONTINENTS AND OCEANS.

Millions of years ago, there was a single super continent calledPANGAEA.with time it began to break up into large pieces of

land.As it split into pieces, the space between the pieces began to fill up with water. This is how continents and oceans were

formed.

The land masses are the continents and the huge water bodies are the oceans.Around 71% of the planet is covered by water,

while the remaining 29% is covered by land. There are seven continents-ASIA, AFRICA, ANTARCTICA, AUSTRALIA, EUROPE,

NORTHAMERICA AND SOUTHAMERICA. The five oceans are the PACIFIC OCEAN ,ATLANTIC OCEAN, INDIAN OCEAN,ARCTIC

OCEAN ,AND SOUTHERN OCEAN.

ASIA:

Asia is the largest of seven continents. It occupies 1/3 of thetotal land area on the planet. The highest peak on earth, MOUNT

EVEREST, and the lowestland region, the DEADSEA are both located in Asia. The two most densely populated countries in the

world-INDIA AND CHINA- are also in Asia.

AFRICA:

Africa is the second largest continent in the world. The worlds longest river NILE , flows through this continent and the largest

desert , the SAHARA is also found here . The highest mountain in the African continent is MOUNT KILIMANJARO.

NORTH AMERICA:

North America is the third largest continent in the world. It is home to many highly advanced countries of the world including

the USA and CANADA.CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS discovered this continent.MT MCKINLEY in Alaska is the highest point in

the continent. The ROCKIES STRETCH along the western part of the continent.THE GREAT LAKES, A group of five fresh water

lakes, are located in the eastern part of NorthAmerica.

SOUTH AMERICA:

South America is the fourth largest continent in the world. This continent is famous for its bio diversity.THE ISTHMUS OF

PANAMA joins NORTHAMERICA and SOUTH AMERICA.A range of mountains calledthe ANDES stretch from the north to the

south in the western part of the continent. The second longest river AMAZON,flows through this continent. One of the world`s

thickestforests, the AMAZON RAIN FOREST are found here . They are home to a large number of flora and fauna.

ANTARCTICA:

Antarctica, the fifth largest continent in the world.is also the coldest continent. It is permanently covered by a thick layer of

snow and thus known as the white continent.

EUROPE:

Page 4: SUBJECT:SOCIAL. TOPIC: CONTINENTS AND OCEANS. · OCEANS: The continents are surrounded by five huge water bodies called oceans.Though the water is salty, the oceans are home to many

Europe is the sixth largest continent in the world .Europe and Asia together form EURASIA,which forms the longest stretch of

land on the Earth. It is home to many well –developed countries which are also popular with tourists. The two important

rivers of Europe are the VOLGA and the DANUBE. The famous mountain range Alps is located here.

AUSTRALIA:

Australia is the smallest continent in the world. It is only continent which is an island. The GREAT AUSTRALIAN DESERT and

the GREAT BARRIER REEF,the largest CORAL REEF,lie in Australia. Australia is home to very rare animals in the world THE

AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO is one of them, which is also the national animal of Australia.

OCEANS:

The continents are surrounded by five huge water bodies called oceans.Though the water is salty, the oceans are home to

many types ofanimals which are referred to as marine life. The ocean beds contain tall mountain ranges known as Ridges and

also long deep and narrow pits known as trenches.

THE PACIFIC OCEAN:

The deepest and largest ocean in the world is the Pacific ocean. It is almost circular in shape and covers around 30%of the

earth surface. It touches all the continents except Europe . pacific ocean has the deepest trench of the world- the Mariana

trench .

THE ATLANTIC OCEAN

The second largest ocean in the world is the atlantic ocean . The ocean spreads in the shape of an ‘S’ . It is bounded by the

continents of Africa and Europe to the east and north America and south America to the west . It extends from the Arctic in

the north to Antartica in the south . A long , under sea mountain range lines beneath the middle of the ocean known as the

mid atlantic ridge . The atlantic ocean has large deposits of natural gas and petroleum .

THE INDIAN OCEAN

The third largest ocean in the world is the Indian ocean . It lies between Africa on the west , Asia on the north , Australia on

the east and antartica in the south. The Arabian sea and the bay of Bengal are two important parts of this ocean . The java

trench in the Indian ocean is the second longest trench in the world . The location of the Indian ocean has been very

favouriable for trade since a long time .

THE ARCTIC OCEAN

The arctic ocean is the smallest of all oceans around the world. It lies in the northern most region of the earth . It is mostly

frozen and covered with ice through out the year . The water here is very cold . during summers , The ice that melts forms

large floating masses of ice known as ice bergs . Polar bear are found in these region .

THE SOUTHERN OCEAN

In 2000 , the international hydro graphic organization created the fifth and newest world ocean – The southern ocean from

southern portions of the atlantic ocean , Indian ocean and pacific ocean . The new southern ocean completely surrounds
