CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS

• Awarded NAVY MARlNE CORPS MEDAL for Life Saving heroic actions (1981) while

onboard USS AMERlCA (CV 66) for rescuing a pilot from a crashed A-7 CORSAIR that

was hanging over the port catwalk and suspended by the arresting gear cable..

• Instrumental in obtaining a state-of-the-art Aircraft fire fighting trainer at NATTC that

was ultimately used for Fleet aircraft firefighting training and qualifications.

• While serving as the Aviation LDO Detailer he detailed himself to USS AMERlCA as

Aircraft Handling Officer (his second tour), filling a critical Fleet requirement. His

unselfish action ensured the ship was manned at a key position just prior to deployment

and ready for tasking.

• Implemented numerous changes and provided significant contributions to flight deck

safety and readiness as the COMNAVAIRLANT Aircraft Handling Team OIC. His

presence was personally requested on many occasions by ship CO's, and his reputation

for fairness and excellence remains well known throughout the Fleet even to this day. He

easily stayed at sea for over 75% of his tour.

• Hand -selected by NATTC CO to become AVIONICS Training Department OIC. His

presence and demeanor brought an immediate reduction in staff and student disciplinary

problems.

• Led the 5-Vector Model initiative. Also known as the "Sailor Continuum" 5VM breaks

down the skills and knowledge that Sailors need to be successful into five categories:

Professional development, personal development, military education and leadership,

certifications and qualifications. Of significance is how he championed the effort to NOT

merge the AB ratings into one or two "mega-ratings" and keeping the skill sets separate.

PERSONAL STATEMENTS

21 July, 2011

CDR Richard D Jones, USN,

Sir, This letter is being written with the intent of providing the strongest support possible for the selection of Captain (ret) Anthony McFarlane as the 2011 selectee for Aviation Boatswain's Mate Living Legend Award.

I first met Capt. McFarlane while stationed at Lakehurst, N.J. serving as an ABH "A" School Instructor in 1978. We served together for almost 3 years until Petty Officer McFarlane received his commission as an Ensign and received orders to USS America (CVA-66). He and I were both first class petty officers and I knew from the moment that we began working together that he was an extreme professional with very unique leadership skills that were key attributes to being a great Aviation Boatswains Mate. He expected and received 110 % effort and results from his students. With every class of ABH's that he graduated, the fleet was better prepared to accomplish its mission. My second tour of duty with this extreme professional was aboard the USS America. This time he as an Ensign and me as a Chief. He was the Crash & Salvage Boatswain and I the Flight Deck Chief. It took me no time to recognize that the flight deck crews and the Air Department in general were a well prepared and extremely professional group of individuals. After serving some time aboard, I realized that Ensign McFarlane was largely responsible for this. Capt. McFarlane also served in many more challenging billets such as Aviation Detailer, Aircraft Handling Officer USS America, and Force Aircraft Handling Officer. He has served as the Aviation Boatswain's Mate Tidewater Chapter President and the Aviation Boatswain's Mate National Chapter President. He is a lifetime Aviation Boatswain's Mate Board ofDirector's member. We remained very close throughout our 30 + year careers and called on each other for advice occasionally when some sage advice was required. No matter what his aspirations were throughout his naval career, Capt. McFarlane was always an AB first, took care of not only his AB 's but of any AB that would reach out to him for help. He remains that way to this day; loyal to God, his family and to all AB's both past and present.

There is no "AB" today that more deserves the recognition of being chosen for the Aviation Boatswain's Mate Living Legend Award than Captain (ret) Anthony McFarlane.

Sincerely,

Charles E Shirley CDR (ret) USN Enclosure 6)

Subj: NOMINATION FOR 2011 ABMA LIVING LEGEND for Captain Anthony McFarlane, USN, Ret

Ref: ABMA SOP dated 01 July 2010

With extreme personal pride and conviction I most strongly endorse the nomination of Captain

Tony McFarlane for the most prestigious award as "ABMA Living Legend". I have personally

known T-Mac his entire Naval career and can easily attest to his professionalism, passion for the "ABMA" and his fellow AB's and Mustang officers. There could NOT be a finer choice!

Captain McFarlane possesses the highest moral character whose boundless energy and desire to

help his fellow man is surpassed by no one. Mentoring may be a newer word in our Navy but

he's been doing it since his yellow shirt days. When he and I sit down and talk about a fellow

AB that he had mentored, and there were hundreds, that selected for Chief, Warrant or LDO he

beams with pride and sometimes even tears. To this day he gets E-mails well beyond his 36 years of Navy service from fellow AB's, enlisted and officers, that somehow reached their career goals

either by his personal example, leadership, caring or mentoring. The above pretty much summarizes T-Mac.

I could easily continue with many more pages without much effort but let me simply say "He's

the best"! I have known virtually all of his predecessors as a personal member of the ABMA

since our beginnings and I promise you he is an absolute MUST choice that will make all AB's active and retired beam with even more pride that we already have for him.

Submitting with Pride and Honor,

Captain Ron Jaeh, USN, Ret.

Capt.(sel) Jones, The following letter of recommendation is intended to be used by the ABMA BoD to support Tony McFarlane's nomination for the ABMA Living Legend Award. I have purposely not rewritten Tony's career in the recommendation (maybe at some risk), but, I think ABs are already familiar and I know they don't like to read long letters! I would ask your help in getting this to the right place at the right time. Thanks r, JM FROM: John J Mazach, VADM, USN (ret) TO: ABMA Board of Directors SUBJECT: Letter of Recommendation for the Aviation Boatswain's Mate Association Living Legend Award 1) It is with a great deal of pride that I most strongly recommend Capt.Tony McFarlane, USN (ret) for the ABMA Living Legend Award. I can not think of anyone who is more deserving of such recognition nor anyone more qualified! I base my comments on having served with Tony and having witnessed first hand his impact on so many of the AB community. 2) Tony McFarlane has been distinguishing himself as an individual and as an Air Boatswain Mate for a very long time. For eleven years as an enlisted Air Boatswain and twenty five years as an LDO, Tony McFarlane has manned every station and rig and stood every watch that existed for air boatswains and while doing so, built a legacy that the majority of your association has been touched by in one way or another. It is not often that anyone has been presented the number of opportunities to make a difference in a community like Tony has and it is almost unheard of for anyone to take advantage of those opportunities like Tony did to leave such a lasting mark on his community. Even since he has taken off his uniform, Tony McFarlane still makes a difference for his community as he goes about influencing the leaders of the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola FL. 3) In the Army they say "remember your regiment" when reminding someone to not lose sight of his heritage. In the Marine Corps it is "Semper Fi". In civilian life, when it happens, it goes something like, "you need to leave the party with the one that brought you". In Tony McFarlane's world, there is no reference saying. He just continues to be an AB, always proud and always supportive, and that says it all! 4) Select him for the Living Legend Award. signature// John J Mazach VADM USN 9ret)
