Subiaco Abbey’s in-house newsletter for June, 1906, quoted a German proverb, applying it tongue-in-cheek to a recent community happening: “Wenn die Not am grössten, ist Gottes Hilfe am nächsten” – “When the need is greatest, God’s help is nearest.” It seems that when the monks were leaving for their annual outing to Shoal Creek, at the last minute someone forgot to load the beer on the wagon. By

the time the calamity was discovered it was too late and too far to return to the Abbey, so the Benedictine Sisters at St. Scholastica Monastery shared with the monks the beer they had been saving for Mother Mei-nrada’s profession anniversary the next day. “When the need is greatest, God’s help is nearest.”

A few months later the newsletter noted: “A great surprise today! Maybe for the first time in his-tory: Father Leo was late for Lauds and Father George was early!” This was editor Father George Binkert poking fun at himself and Father Leo Gerschwyler.

Anecdotes like these close the gap of years and bring us into the life of the Subiaco community of a century ago, where we sense the same atmosphere that we are breathing here today. Our life is very serious but also very light-hearted, because we believe, with St. Benedict, that “the divine presence is everywhere” (Rule, Chapter 19) and that everything we do is done in “the school of the Lord’s service” (Prologue, 45). If anyone becomes glum or worse, begins to take himself too seriously, he can count on a brother or two to help bring him out of it.

Our Annual Report this year gives glimpses into our life from many different angles. All of it, we believe, is God’s work under God’s design. We want to do our part as children of God in Christ, therefore with great purpose but with a light step and a light heart.

Thank you for joining with us in our life and ministry at Subiaco. You have become part of all we do, and we hope that you will consider these pictures of Subiaco people and places as part of your own family album. We invite you to come to the Abbey whenever you can, but we are united with you all the time in love and prayer.
