In 1999, the connection that IT outsourcing buyers felt towards offshore IT service providers was iffy at the best. The IT outsourcing horror stories and first hand experience of outsourcing buyers added more fuel to the already raging unhappiness over offshore providers' performance.At this juncture, our founder Ralph Budelman observed that the unhappiness was caused largely due to skewed expectations on either side. Cost reduction was at that time the driver for IT outsourcing and non-realization of cost reductions due to several factors caused many an outsourcing deal veer towards “failure”.Thus was launched Stylus Systems from a 2 bedroom house in 1999 with a deep focus on expectation management, skilled people and NOT 'high' cost reduction. “The focus was on quality and not quantity,” said Ralph.This strategy has worked well for both our clients and our organization. Client: Fred Fishback, a premier Applied Behavioral Scientist is an interface between industrial psychology and engineering. He has worked with some of the top fortune 500 companies including ALCOA, Glaxo-SmithKline, American Express, Matsushita and others.

Product:Online HR assessment web application initially developed to use for Fred's services for one of America's leading organizations.

Initial Scenario: Fred had the idea in his mind. He contacted Stylus to develop the application from the scratch with him being the master designer. This was four years back.

Services Provided: Custom web application development with a mix of T&M and FTE (full time engagement) model. Processes involved include creating modules for tablet PC, creating dashboards, graphical reporting facilities, live support, and long term maintenance.

How we started:Initially we took 6 odd months for the first phase; from then on the web application has been evolving and growing.Technology used: ASP/ SQL Server (initial platform), .NET (for some modules like tablet PC), Dundas (for reporting and graphs), Kayako (ticketing tool), EasyAsk NLQ tool.What Fred liked in us:Fred was impressed by the different levels of communication medium Stylus offered especially the programmers talking to the client directly and our team's ability to efficiently handle different technology. Also he liked our live support during his working timings in the US and the regular involvement of Stylus top management in the project.

4 years down the line:We have been serving this customer for the past 4 years and we have build expertise in HR assessment domain. It is also a strategic project in terms of the new tools and technology we use which is challenging to us.The future looks good for Fred-Stylus partnership. Currently, Stylus team is working on making the assessment app more user-friendly. We're working on converting the entire app from ASP to .NET platform. Also included in this module are features that will allow thousands to take assessments from anywhere in world (currently they have to report to a local test center for assessments)
