Everyone struggles with how to dress their familiesfor a session, and advice can be found all over theplace... it's such a common issue that my welcomepacket has an entire page devoted to the topic!The best advice is to be yourselves while makingsure that your overall color scheme and style arecoordinated.

Of course, that’s easier said than done for most ofus, and so the majority of families end up in acombination of solid neutral colors. That worksgreat from a portrait perspective ­ solids tend tophotograph really well without distracting from thephoto ­ but it can feel a bit boring… and this iswhere the right accessories come into play. Whenyou accentuate a simple outfit with scarves, hats,and jewelry, you can not only add a bit of color andvisual interest, but create an easy way to changethe look of what you’re wearing in a matter ofseconds.

Start SimpleThe first rule when accessorizing an outfit is toremember that you want your pictures to focus onyour face and not your clothes. Heavy or loudpieces can be too bulky and overwhelming, andwhile it’s great to have pieces that pop, you alsowant to make sure you don’t overdo it. Keep thelarger pieces of clothing ­ tops, pants, and dresses­ well­fitted and simple and in a coordinated overallcolor palate.

Add ContrastMost of my clients shudder at the thought of beingoverly­matchy in their photos (and how manyfamilies all go out together in white shirts andkhakis anyway?), but I do understand how temptingit can be to default to a neutral palate when you’retrying to coordinate four or five people. A quick fix?Choose one or two contrasting colors to mix in! Ascarf with a splash of color, fun earrings, or yourfavorite pair of boots will add personality withoutdistracting from the images. This is a great way tocoordinate the look for the whole group withoutgetting too complicated (or expensive!).

Get Help!A lot goes into choosing the right look for yourphoto session. If you are still struggling with thewardrobe and jewelry, pick a quiet day at yourfavorite clothing boutique and ask a salesperson tohelp you with ideas ­ they can be a great source ofinspiration finding the right look (but don’t let themtalk you into anything you wouldn’t normally wear)!Of course, I’m happy to help, too… though I’m nofashionista, I’ve learned a lot over the course ofmy career and can help you make choices that willgive you the look you want that looks great for thecamera.
