NARRATIVEThe style of narrative music videos consist of the artist or band appearing in the video. It can

either be that they play the main characters in the video or less important roles. The musicvideo will have a beginning, middle and end, similar to a short film.

The music video will not necessarily always make sense and may cut to the artist singing or

performing so that they are included. It may be that the concept of the music video associates

with the band for example, Eminems Stan uses the two artists and another character but relates

to Eminems life as he usually talks about stresses in his life.

In concert music videos consist of live footage of the artist or bands performing. This style

of music video allows the audience to see and experience what the band are like when they

perform and allows those who may not be able to travel or afford to go and see a particular

artist. Furthermore, through this style we are able to see how they audience react to the

performance and not only this, it makes the band or artist appear more popular as the

audience want to feature in the music video on TV so the reaction is enhanced by this style

of music video.

This style is more often seen in the genre of Rock and gives the video a more authentic look

as concerts are what we associate with this style of music. Additionally, the style is well

suited to rock as it is possible for rock bands to play live which means that in concert style

videos are realistic.

ANIMATION

Animation is one of the newest styles of music videos and is developing rapidly due to

technology. There are three types of animation that is used in music videos hand drawn, digitaland stop motion and there are a range of example to show this.

Animation is commonly used in Indie-Rock and I believe this is because Indie-Rock is quite new

and up-and-coming and therefore this style of music video represents how modern the style is.

PARODYParody is when a band or artist imitates someone portraying them in a negative manner.

Usually this style of music videos are not created by well know artists however, Eminem is afamous artist that creates parody music videos.

The intention behind parody could be created to show the audience that the band or artist

that are being mocked are doing something wrong or it could just be to make fun for

example stereotyping typical people.

An example of this is Blink 182s All The Small Things where the rock boy band mock other

boy bands for their cheesy appearance.

PASTICHEThe style of pastiche reflects the artist or bands characteristics and appearance in a positive

way. The band that does the imitating does not portray the artist or subject in a negative way orgive them bad press.

An example of this is Michael Jacksons Thriller where his music video is like a recreation of a

horror movie. It doesnt necessarily take the micky out of thrillers, but it fits well with his

intention of the song and picks out common things related to scary movies.

HOMAGEWhen a band or artist pays homage to one and another it shows that they respect the

artist and this usually happens when someone passes away. It is a tribute to the artistthat honours the artist using their characteristics and persona or even their

appearance. This is evident in a lot of Chris Browns videos and songs for example in

She AintYou he dressed very similar to Michael Jackson, performs stylistic

movements and at the beginning states that he is his biggest inspiration.

INFLUENCING IN

COMMERCIALSInfluencing in commercials is when companies of products contribute to the cost of themusic video production as their goods will make an appearance in the music video of a

famous artist. This video will consist of a range of short close ups of the products

revealing its name and brand to entice the audience into wanting the product.

An example of this is Britney Spears Hold It Against Me where there are lots ofproducts that feature in the video, for instance, perfume, make up and camera

companies.

POPULAR GENRE

MUSIC VIDEOSThe most popular genres of music will usually have a music video to represent andreflect the artist or band. It is common to hear Hip-Hop, Dance, Rock, Country, RnB and

other types of music in the chart and these frequently have music videos made to help

sell the song better.

They all have a range of different conventions used in the making of the video, however,

some will cross over and be similar for example, lip-syncing to make the artist appear

they are actually singing it live, costumes to enhance their individual style and locations

for the same purpose.

INDIE ROCKIndie Rock is an up and coming genre of music that uses music videos to support selling

the band.

An Indie Rock music video will usually consist of:

Location: It is likely that Indie Rock locations will be an open space where there are no

restrictions to show their openness to experimentation.

Costume: Casual clothes that are modern at the time to show their identity and style

Props: There will most probably be instruments like, guitars, keyboards and drums.

Cinematography: Close ups of lip-syncing, mid shots of the artist singing and long shots ofthe band playing the instruments.

HIP-HOPHip-Hop has been around for a long time but is still very current. Throughout its history,

the music videos consist of the same ideas in terms of what they want to represent.

A Hip-Hop music vdeio will usually consist of:

Location: In places like mansions, warehouses and music video sets so that the audience

focus on the props that they use.

Costumes: Clothing that is very stylish and modern. They may have t-shirts that display

their logo or gang sign to present their selves.

Props: They will wear lots of jewellery to show their expense and cars.

Cinematography: Close ups and extreme close ups so that the audience focus on theexpensive props that they include in their music videos, close ups of them rapping or

singing and long shots if they have a gang to show their popularity.;

DANCEDance is a very popular genre of music which is taking over the charts.

A dance music video will usually consist of:

Location: Set in a club environment or on holiday to convey this rich, partying lifestyle.

Costumes: Little clothing or clothing that you would wear to a night club. Heels, lots of

make up

Props: Alcohol, DJ sets, cars to enhance this night club, partying theme.

Cinematography: Close ups of the people enjoy their selves which is usually in slow

emotion so that we can see their happy expressions, long shots of the other clubbers inthe background and close ups of lip syncing/
