Style Junky

I have commissioned by a leading fashion magazine to produce a 6 page eco-friendly editorial spread based on the theme ‘Style Junky’. I will create timeless, deconstructed, recut and completely transformed sustainable style. The purpose of the editorial theme ‘Style Junky’ is to raise awareness and encourage collaboration towards sustainability. In doing so, I will explore, experiment with understand the use of a range of materials, techniques and processes; demonstrating the ability to carry out safe investigations. I will review my experiments at different stages of development in order to modify and refine my work as it progresses.

Inspiration Mood board

This is a mood board I created on photoshop as my inspiration for this assignment. I loved the different shapes created with the paper and fabrics and the colours used to make a statement. I will use this for my final design ideas.

Paper Manipulation

I used paper manipulation to create a dress. The paper was quite easy to shape into a dress, I used glue and masking tape to keep it together. As paper is quite flat I had to make a under skirt to get an added effect, this made it look bigger and fuller. I created a fringed effect, but visually I don’t feel like it looks good. Paper has sharp edges so the dress didn’t look loose and didn’t flow. I cut thin straps for the back to make a V shape, and a thicker piece for the belt, because it was paper it allowed to curve them around the mannequin.

Paper Manipulation

I used paper to make lots of different squares by folding it and gluing together. I manipulated the shapes the square made and came up with this final shape and glued it together to make a mini skirt. I

think the skirt is very different and I love the shape the squares gave when put together. I think it looks

editorial.

Fabric Manipulation – Style Junky

I took a cardigan an made it into a one shouldered Grecian style dress. The belt was made out of 2 pieces of fabric cut and wrapped together, and the neckline was made from a gold material. I like how this dress turned out because the added gold neckline makes the gold in the dress pop and it looks like a Grecian goddess dress.

Clothes Manipulation I used old clothing to

recreate new pieces. I tore a dress and used the trimming to make a scarf. I also made a boring t-shirt a bit more interesting by cutting the back and make a heart shape with a plait in the

middle. I think the scarf is very wearable and colourful

and the t-shirt is more interesting.

Paper

ManipulationI used paper to create a dress, first I rolled up lots of paper to create this shape. Then I made a band on the mannequin to make a base for the dress to go on. I stuck the pieces all around the shoulder with lots of layers to add volume. I played around with the top half to decide what worked best and then made another shape around the waist to turn it into a dress. I really like the outcome of it and think this will look really good in a photoshoot.

Design Ideas

These are my favourite designs I came up with. I wanted to make them different but very feminine so the first one I did was very girly and the second and third are mid length and very classy. All three have different necklines which I think make the dresses.

My Final PieceFor my final piece I chose to use paper. I rolled up lots of paper to make a shape then glued it together, I then put lots of different coloured inks on them and rolled them around to get this arty effect. I wanted to create a different shape and look on necklines on the body. I made an under line to attach them all on and stapled them all together to make this shape. I took it high from the neck all the way across the front of the body then started again in a different direction on the back. Overall I think this looked good and dramatic and the added colour worked. To make it better I would have made a bottom half for my final piece if I had more time.
