PRESS RELEASE The ALEXI FREEMAN AW11 STARDUST collection takes you on an interstellar journey, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of influences to produce a collection that is simultaneously modern, sexy and wearable.

In trademark fashion, Freeman draws upon a post-modernist pastiche of references, drawing inspiration from seemingly disparate elements from outer space to opera, seamlessly bringing them together to create a collection rich with eclecticism. Stardust two tone sequins bejewel classic tailoring. Dazzle camouflage motifs from battle ships are referenced in the form of the Ziggy chevron print emblazoned upon voluminous 80’s batwing silhouettes. Sophisticated man style tailoring is spliced with athletic functionality. Party dresses are given a futuristic twist via holographic and metallic foil detailing and Grecian drapery is reinvigorated in anomalous fabrications.

Observing and drawing inspiration from the way ensembles of block colour, print and embellishment are not only composed by stylists and fashion editors, but worn by real women the collection was designed in a way that allowed for interchangeability between pieces. Block colours of black, midnight blue and winter white are deployed and accentuated by electric blue and silver metallic highlights. While bold print in combination with block colour have featured strongly in previous AF collections, Freeman’s introduction of heavy embellishment arrives in the form of two-tone Stardust sequins, that brush between two colours as they’re worn completing the trilogy.

STARDUST also sees a continuation of accessories designed and produced in collaboration with jewellery designer Tessa Blazey. Under the title of Alexi + Tessa, there are two distinct stories. One is hand crafted from oxidized sterling silver set with marcasite jewels, while the other is formed from multi-layered laser cut acrylic.

Under the title of AFAR, STARDUST will also see the fourth in a series of installation art projects in collaboration with Aaron Roberts of room11 architectural practice, investigating the two-tone Stardust sequin detailing central to this collection.

A sporty take on film noir for an old fashioned girl who has just seen colour for the first time and still has stars in her eyes...”

Born in Hobart in 1978 and formally trained in Fine Art, majoring in printmaking and sculpture Alexi Freeman began his career as an artist. Heavily referencing fashion concepts and aesthetics, Freeman produced limited edition prints and garments successfully shown and distributed via boutiques and commercial galleries in Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney and New York. The move to establish ALEXI FREEMAN as a ready to wear women’s fashion label (est. 2006) was a natural progression of ideas and experiences.

Freeman’s approach to fashion maintains the essence of the vernacular he developed as an artist. Illustrations influence not only garments, but also styling, hair and make up concepts. Printmaking techniques are utilised in the design and production of textile prints. An un-inhibited approach to construction references the stroke of the artist’s hand whilst pursuing a level of workmanship and attention to detail indicative of high fashion.

Named by Jan Breen Burns in The Age as ‘the next big thing’ and ‘ready to explode’, a finalist in the Powerhouse Museum International Lace Award (2011) and having entered the European market the ALEXI FREEMAN label is a brand on the rise.

ALEXI FREEMAN is currently stocked in Australia at Milly Sleeping, Sybilla, Lupa, Monkhouse and at the ALEXI FREEMAN studio in Collingwood and the accessory line ALEXI + TESSA is also stocked at Glitzern and Craft Victoria. AF is also available in New Zealand at Where the Fox Lives and in Russia at Look at Me. Garments are dyed, printed, cut and sewn in Australia and produced with Australian textiles wherever possible.
