Barcelona is a wonderfully cosmopolitan Mediterranean city witha dynamic, enterprising nature which has earned it a position among the leading cultural cities in the world. No other city has the Modernist architectural heritage that Barcelona does: Gaudí’s Sagrada Família, the Pedrera and Casa Batlló, are just a few examples of this heritage. The Gothic quarter is one of Barcelona’s most beautiful attractions, given that it has some of the best preserved medieval buildings in Europe. It is no wonder thattoday Barcelona attracts over seven million tourists per year.

The city offers a wide variety of cultural activities. All types of cultural events are organised in Barcelona, including a broad range held on an annual basis such as festivals, fairs, awards and conferences. The city is also full of art and history museums, concert halls, theatres, cinemas and cultural centres that offer a full schedule of activities for a highly diverse audience.

Barcelona has traditionally been open to outside influences while maintaining its own strong identity, and it has always taken a modern, dynamic approach to all aspects of urban life. As a coastal city with a warm, sunny climate, it is easy to enjoy plenty of outdoor activities, such as sunbathing on the beach and swimming between spring and autumn.

Barcelona is the only major European city which has four kilometres of beaches that include the most modern facilities. The Port of Barcelona provides easy contact with the rest of the Mediterranean and the world, and is a major economic force in the region.

The city has an extensive public-transport network. Buses, the metro and trams will take you wherever you need to go. Taxis can be hailed anywhere, not just at taxi stands. Moreover, a high speed train line connects Barcelona and Madrid and the airport is constantly expanding. The city also has more than 150 km of bike paths.

Barcelona has one of the largest university communities in Europe, with approximately 200.000 students and 12.500 lecturers professors. During its 500 years of university life, the city has demonstrated its firm commitment to providing quality education. Within this university community, the UIC has forged a unique space for itself, due to its international outlook. The UIC has a strong focus on education and training for professionals in today’s world while also maintaining and respecting humanist values.
