The phenomenal growth of tourism in the past five decades has dramatically changed global lifestyles to include tourism, and the very speedy for still greater growth is rooted in globalisation and the expanding economies of Asia.

Today, Tourism is the fastest‐growing foreign income earner worldwide with the major tourist generating countries situated in Western Europe and North America.

Significance of Tourism

Tourism is a multi‐disciplinary sector and is interlinked with several different industries and service sectors. It is an activity, which affects societies in different ways and has certain impacts on their socio‐economic and cultural development.

The various fields that tourism can contribute to our stated as follows: Regional development Employment Entertainment activities Culture and other hospitality services Environmental protection Infrastructure Transportation Health Education

Tourism is a major employment generator, including alternative employment opportunities for women, young people, highly qualified as well as unskilled people, which fosters regional development (World Tourism Organization, 2002)

Tourism accounts for 10.7% of global GDP, 9.4% of total global investments and 8.2% of world employment.

Practically, every country in the world is now looking at tourism as an important means for developing national prosperity.

Tourism is a broad concept referring to the people’s activities of leisure time within or out of their countries regardless of routine travels i.e. from home to work place

India follows the UN recommendation dividing tourists into two groups namely

1. Leisure (recreation, holiday, health, study, religion & sport)

2. Business (family, mission or meeting)

The definition of a tourist adopted by the UNO is as follows: “Any person visiting a country, other than that in which he

usually resides, for a period of at least 24 hours”

India has adopted the following definition to recognize a tourist “A person who travels to a country other than that in which

he has his usual residence, the main purpose of whose visit is other than the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the country visited and is staying for a period of at least one night but not more than one year in that country”

Tourism In Goa

1. Beach Tourism: As Goa has a 105 km coast line, the beaches of Goa are a very important tourist attraction.

2. Adventure Tourism: Goa has a very good potential for activities like trekking, paragliding, dolphin sighting boating, and mountain climbing.

3. Wildlife Tourism: Goa has 2 wild life sanctuaries, one wild life national park and one bird sanctuary. Around 1.25 lakhs tourist visit these sanctuaries every year.

4. Medical Tourism: Many world class medical hospitals like Apollo and Vivus have been started in Goa, which provide world class facilities at a fraction of the corresponding cost abroad.

5. Pilgrimage Tourism: Goa too is famous for its religious places6. Cultural Tourism: Goa is a land of rich and diverse culture and people of

different religions (Hindus, Muslims and Christians) live peacefully together in harmony

The various factors that have contributed to rise in domestic tourism: Increased disposable income of the middle class; Increased urbanization and stress of living in cities and towns; Increased ownership of cars, which is making domestic tourism more attractive;

especially among the upper-middle and middle classes; Improved employment benefits, such as the leave travel concession; Development of inexpensive mass transport and improved connections to various

places of tourist interest; Increased number of cheap accommodations and resorts, greater advertising

targeted at domestic tourists both by the central and the state governments, as well as the tourist industry, and increasing of time-sharing in holiday spent, among the middle class.

Places of tourist interest are so numerous and of varied nature that it is not easy to describe these places comprehensively. In general the tourist spots of Goa are counted more like, Shrines, Forts, places of historical importance, springs, lakes and birds, sanctuaries, religious centers, science spots, sea beaches, summer resorts, waterfalls and wild lives etc.

Panaji: The capital of Goa, a small and charming city on the left bank of silvery Mandovi river with beautiful, red-roofed houses, built in Latin styleMargao: The hinterland of Southern Goa in Salcete taluka is a thriving commercial metropolis linked by rail to the rest of India & Mormugao Harbour and the national highways, with Maharashtra and Karnataka. It has fine parks, gardens as well as imposing old mansions and modern buildings.Vasco da Gama:A modern well laid out city close to Mormugao Harbor. It has beautiful and extensive avenue and gardens. The air terminus of Goa at "Dabolim" lies on the outskirts of the cityMapusa: Capital of Bardez Taluka is at the cross roads of the network of highways covering whole northern Goa. It has beautiful layout with gardens and a church. Weekly Fair on Friday is held at the modern stream lined market and attended by large crowds.

As mentioned earlier, the survey is a combination of both census and sample survey. The survey has covered all the sectors related to Tourism, which includes the tourists (both domestic as well as foreign), all the accommodation units (hotels- guest houses, dharmasalas), restaurants and eateries, transport services, tours and travel agent, souvenir/handicraft shops and other supportive services.

A Visit to Salaulim Dam

The Salaulim Dam located on the Salaulim River, a tributary of the Zuari River in Goa, India, is an integral component of the Salaulim Irrigation Project which envisages benefits of irrigation and drinking water supply. 

The dam is a composite earth-cum-masonry dam of 42.7 metres (140 ft) height.

Suggestions to improve the tourism

Diversifying the areas of tourism: the tourism industry in Goa has mainly concentrated on beach tourism and neglected other forms of tourism to a large extent.

Training the guides and the local people Maintain the control on the prices of goods and the quality

of services: Improving the infrastructure especially the transport: Improving the safety especially of women. Maintaining a control on the beaches. The beaches in Goa

are very dangerous for swimming due to the changes in tides.

Botanical Garden cum Eco Recreational Park very nice to see due to pleasant landscape and as a tourism point of view. one can be understand and try to include this place as one of the tourist place under Goa tourism.

Conclusion

Goa state famous due to mix and multi functioning center as well as attraction of tourist nationally & internationally. Per day or per week vehicles easy availability, accommodation facility and for tourist most important is road network with enough signage makes Goa unique. street markets including handicrafts increase interest in Goa culture. Goa is well known as a leisure tourism(85 %) activity place in India as a spot.
