Schooling in UK

• Schooling is compulsory for everyone in UK up till an age of 16.

• UK follows 2 distinct systems of schooling. a) For England, Wales & Northern Ireland. b) For Scotland.

• Basic differences between both the systems is that education in Scotland is for 12 years whereas in England, Wales and N.I. it is for 13 years.

• In terms of comparison with Indian qualification 10th standard = GCSE ‘O’ Levels in UK 12th standard = GCE ‘A’ Levels in UK (except Scotland)

• Undergraduate degrees can be offered only by universities and institutes who have received Royal Charter Status by Government.

• It represents 325 universities and colleges (2009)• Online application form • Middleman between university and agents/student.• Student can apply maximum of 5 choices on your application• Cost : a) 5 options -> £ 19 b) 1 option -> £ 12• UCAS has 2 options of ‘Extra‘ and ‘Clearing’ enabling students

to apply late or apply to other universities if they have been unsuccessful n first 5 applications.

• It depends upon the university but generally:

Year 12(CBSE) – 85% above with similar grades in the subjects of specialization (e.g. if a student is going for BEngg Mechanical Engineering then university expects similar grades in Mathematics & Physics as well).

Part Time Jobs

• Part Time -> 20 hrs/ week during Term time -> Full Time during vacations -> Average pay £6-7/hr -> Jobs related to Retail, Hospitality, BPO, Admin, Library etc.

• 40 Hrs (per week) * £6 = £ 240 p.w.

• University assists in finding part time jobs.

• All the international students who have studied Bachelors, Masters, Research, PGCE in UK or HND (only from Scotland) are eligible to apply for 2 years Post Study Work (PSW) visa which enables them to work anywhere in the UK.

• Average salary for graduates (with no experience) is approx £ 22,000 p.a.

• All the universities have a career centre which helps international students in finding job.
