Estonia boasts a long tradition of high-quality higher education. For young people, Estonia’s vibrant and international environment together with access to the latest developments in infor-mation technology make Estonia an attractive place to study and live. Superior education in this small EU state comes at a good value, with relatively low tuition and living costs.

In the academic year 2011-2012, Estonian univer-sities will offer more than 100 recognised degree programs in English. Shorter periods of study in Estonia are also available in semester or summer courses. Estonian universities have facilitated programs and structural changes in accordance with the European-wide Bologna Process and the creation of a common European higher education area.

After class, scholars enjoy opportunities to wander the medieval streets of Estonian old towns, attend concerts, participate in the lively night-life of modern clubs and bars, or escape into the riches of preserved nature—endless forests, picturesque lakes, and white beaches. It is no wonder that Estonia, with only 1.34 million inhabitants, at-tracts annually more than 3 million tourists.

Institutions of higher education have made internationalization a priority. The Ministry of Education and Research of Estonia and the Ar-chimedes Foundation lead the efforts to increase mobility of scholars and research within and outside of Europe. The Archimedes Founda-tion is an independent body established by the Estonian government in 1997 with the objective to coordinate and implement international and national projects for training, education, research, technological development, and innovation.

In 2008, the Archimedes Foundation initiated the “Study in Estonia” campaign to promote Estonian higher education abroad with support from the European Social Fund. Study in Estonia has part-nered with Estonian higher education institutions that provide international degree programs, fully English-taught and accredited.

HIGHER EDUCATION IN ESTONIAThe academic year starts in early September and is divided into two semesters. In most cases, in-ternational students are admitted to the autumn semester.

Level I: Bachelor’sThe standard length of academic bachelor’s studies is usually three years with a required completion of ECTS* 180 credits (in exceptional cases four years and 240 ECTS credits) for graduation. With completion of degree requirements, a bakalau-reusekraad (bachelor’s degree) is awarded.

Depending on the subject area, the standard length of a first level certificate of professional higher education studies is three to four years (180 – 240 ECTS credits). With completion of the required coursework, a rakenduskõrgharidusõppe diplom (Diploma of professional higher education) is awarded.

Students with an academic or professional bachelor’s degree may continue on to pursue the Master’s degree, or magistrikraad.

Level II: Master’sThe standard length of master’s level studies is one to two years, working towards completion of 60 – 120 ECTS credits. Together with bachelor’s level studies a master’s is not awarded in less than five years (300 ECTS credits).

In addition to the general, two-level structure, the courses of medicine, dentistry, pharmaceutical, veterinarian, architectural, and civil engineering are available. First-level studies require a standard length of five to six years of study and a capacity of 300 – 360 ECTS credits.

Level III: DoctoralThe standard length of doctoral studies is three to four years after which the postgraduate research degree doktorikraad is conferred.

Founded in 1632, the University of Tartu is the largest and most comprehensive university in Estonia and one of the most venerable centers of education and research in Central and Eastern Europe. Today, the University of Tartu has 9 faculties and 5 colleges across Estonia, in addition to several specialised research institutes. Tartu is home to 17,000 students, including 670 international students from more than 30 countries.

Tallinn University was established in 2005, merging several universities and research institutes in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. The Estonian Business School (EBS) is the oldest private university in the Baltic States to offer business education. The school provides active and enterprising students with the aca-demic basis for success. Estonian Academy of Arts, celebrating its 95th anniversary, is the only public university in Estonia offering higher education in fine arts, design, architecture, media, visual studies, art culture, cultural heritage and conservation.

The Estonian Academy of Arts is a leading national and international center of innovation in visual culture. In addition to active study and research, the EAA also offers lifelong learning opportunities through the Open Academy.

Currently, the 1,130 students enrolled at the Estonian Academy of Arts are taught by 83 professors, associate professors, teachers and lecturers. Additionally, 38 workshop managers are on hand to assist students. The Estonian Academy of Arts prides itself on their small student to professor ratio, which allows personal and one-on-one attention for the instructor and learner. Studies take place in small groups of carefully selected students.

Many of the students participate in exchange programmes at partner international universities during their studies. The EAA cooperates with almost 100 universities abroad and belongs to several international higher education networks. Annually, students are recognized in international design competitions.
