HOW TO BECOME A SELF-EMPLOYED BOOKKEEPERWhat's your first step? It starts with gaining the qualifications that you need to do the job and then applyingfor your practice licence.

There are several awarding bodies who offer certification, but the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) isthe ideal choice if you want to become a self-employed bookkeeper.

The ICB offer a series of qualifications that can take you from a beginner to having the knowledge and skillsto work as a bookkeeper. When you've successfully gained your Level 3 Certificate In Bookkeeping you'll become a full member of ICB.At this level you can apply for your ICB Practice Licence as long as you have also arranged for ProfessionalIndemnity Insurance cover.

Associate (AICB)

Level 2 ICB Qualification

Assistant Bookkeeper

Associate Members have a full understanding of the concepts of double entry bookkeepingand its place in modern business: producing an initial trial balance, identifying andcorrecting errors, and reconciling sales and purchases ledger balances.

Member (MICB)

Level 3 ICB Qualification

Self-Employed/Employed Bookkeeper

Members can produce VAT Returns, control the sales and purchases ledgers, post year-endadjustments and produce the final accounts for sole traders, partnerships, not-for-profitorganisations and Limited companies. Members have a firm understanding of the basics ofIFRS and UKGAAP.

Fellow (FICB)

Level 4 ICB Qualification &two years at MICB

Depending on the areas they choose to specialise in. Fellows provide managementinformation and make recommendations, file self-assessment tax returns for individuals, orcorporation tax returns and draft financial statements for micro and small businesses usingFRS 105 and 102. 1A

Founded in 1996, the ICB was set up to promote the bookkeeping profession, learningand education, and to offer qualifications. They are the respected and trustedbenchmark for the industry and are the largest bookkeeping membershiporganisation in the world.

Over 150,000 students and members are part of the ICB and it operates in over 100 countries.

Only the finest professionals are eligible to become a member, and the ICB‘s certification is based on exams.Members need to maintain training via Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to keep their status.
