3 BNC Study Group Program

Hello Brandeis Members and Welcome to the 2016-17 Study Group Program

Welcome to the 100th anniversary year of Louis Brandeis’ nomination to the Supreme Court. Celebrate this illustrious event with us by learning about our namesake’s legal decisions and crusades that defined him. Did you know that he entered Harvard Law School without having a formal undergraduate degree? Did you know that in 1913 Louis Brandeis turned down a cabinet position in President Woodrow Wilson’s cabinet? Join the Justice Louis Brandeis study group where the leaders will expound on the impact this son of Bohemian Jews made on our society.

This year, we have an array of study groups that we expect will educate, entertain and inspire you. We have study groups about the famous and infamous; the privileged and talented, and disenfranchised. Literature and the arts are well represented with film groups, book discussion groups, and something new – a men’s only book club. The performing arts have come to our chapter. Learn how a director prepares a play for production. Have fun participating in the play reading, or just watch.

We have several how to groups and one specific to iPhones and iPads only – iPhone photography. If your smart phone is not an iPhone, you’re welcome to attend this class, but know it is not specifically for you, and if you have any questions, they will not be addressed.

Our geographic location has afforded us access to many exciting natural venues. This year we will be visiting Panther Ridge, a non-profit, conservation center in Wellington. The center provides a home for some of the world’s most beautiful and endangered big cats, many of whom had been abused...and, it’s less than 7 miles from Wycliffe. Surely, you can visit on your own (by appointment only), but it will cost you more than double our fee. We do have a rain date, so save both dates if you sign up.

Have you ever attended the taping of a TV show? This year, you will have the opportunity to do just that. Unfortunately, we cannot give you the date yet, because WXEL does not book authors that far in advance for their, Between the Covers: Meet the Author, television show. As soon as we receive information from the station, we will send out a cyber blast email so you can register. This will probably be in the late fall. In the meantime, indicate on the registration form that you may be interested in attending. This is not a commitment to attend.

As in the past, we will continue to send out email reminders every two weeks of the upcoming study groups, and more importantly whether or not they have space available for additional registrants. We are happy for you to join us if your plans change.

Remember to register early and include a self-addressed stamped envelope. We’ll see you at the Opening Brunch on Monday, October 24, 2016

Carol Brecher and Sheila Novins

Crimes Against Humanity – The Nuremberg Trials

Thursday, March 2, 2017, 10:00 A.M.

Leader: Sindee Kerker; Attorney at Law, Professor, Lynn University, Former Deputy District Attorney during the O.J. TrialCoordinator: Judy Handelman, [email protected], 432 4027 Place: Temple Beth Tikvah, 4550 Jog Road, GreenacresFee: $20

In October, 1945, the International Military Tribunal opened in the Supreme Court Building in Berlin to bring charges against 24 major war criminals and six criminal organizations, including the Nazi Party leadership and the Gestapo. This series of military tribunals, held by the Allied forces, led to the prosecution of prominent members of the political, military, judicial, and economic leadership of Nazi Germany. In 1961, the film, Judgment at Nuremberg, based on the actual trials and directed by Stanley Kramer, was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. This clearly points out the major importance of the Nuremberg Trials. For this reason, we recommend you meet Sindee Kerker and listen to her impressions of the proceedings from a legal point of view. Couples welcome.

Regardless of how much is fact or fiction, many artists in the Renaissance period used codes for a variety of reasons. Michelangelo was one of those artists. Now, more than 500 years later, the depth of his accomplishments is still shrouded in mystery. The artist had much to conceal - some in regard to the Jewish People - with the hope that all would someday be revealed. Dr. Agin will make that revelation in this multi-media presentation. Couples welcome.
