At Adelaide Botanic High School, we support students to have genuine choice and voice in their learning as we know they are far more likely to be engaged and have greater ownership of their learning as a result.

Studios provide students with choice and voice on a term by term basis rather than the full year or semester-based choice subjects traditionally selected a year in advance. Each Studio is an 80-minute block of time each week with a strong Australian Curriculum and pathways focus and not an ad hoc set of choices.

Term 1 this year three Studios; digital fluency, passport to school and the precinct along with the development of the school house structure were designed to support students with their start to the school.

Terms 2, 3 and 4 students will be able to choose 3 Studios per term based on the following choice criteria.

At least 1 studio must be undertaken from each of the 4 learning areas, leaving 5 free choices as long as no more than 5 Studios are undertaken within any one learning area. A student may choose to do all Studios from one learning area in a single term if they wish and do not have to evenly spread them over the year, although this would not be recommended.

This approach provides the option for students to create a full year course from the Studios in, for example music, languages and mathematics but also still have plenty of other choices.

Studios need to meet a number of criteria before being offered.

Studios provide students with choice and voice

tudios?

These criteria should include:

- specific Australian Curriculum not covered in other areas

- an experience that extends/stretches student learning in a particular area

- support in areas where students may struggle

- an experience that is unique

- being part of a planned pathway

- assessment of Australian Curriculum and focus on 21st Century Capabilities

- the promotion of collaboration

- immersion in an area of passion

- address the Adelaide Botanic High School learning design principles

Studios will fall into the following categories:

- once off

- ongoing – that is there is progression so that they are done in sequence

- ongoing where there is no progression and can be done in any order

Studio One - Studio One (40 mins) is a dedicated time each week for all students that provides for a more intense focus on wellbeing, safety and being a part of Adelaide Botanic High School and the wider community. This is a developmental program that supports students as they move through the school focussing on the needs of students at each of the specific year levels.

The Studio outlines for term 2 are provided in this guide along with instructions regarding the selection process. The choices made by students for term 2 will inform the offering for the rest of the year and provide an opportunity for students to be involved in the formation of new Studios.

Please feel free to contact your child’s Connect teacher if further information is needed.

Studios are part of a planned

pathway

- selecting Studios that contain a blend of interest, challenge and fun

- their progress in subjects they are doing this year
