I N T R O D U C T I O N

I n the first part o f his cr i t ical , serial publ ica t ion about the fungi o f

Hungary , G u s z t á v Moesz Hungar ian mycologist has discussed the species

o f M y x o m y c è t e s ( M O E S Z 1926). I n this w o r k Moesz enumerated 101 spe

cies o f w h i c h 49 were reported f r o m the present te r r i tory o f Hungary. The

last 80 years, w h i c h have brought considerable taxonomic and nomencla-

tura l changes, p rov ided many new data f r o m Hungary and these recent

acquisitions are available for re-assessment.

The a im o f the present study is to summarise the data concerning

M y x o m y c è t e s species o f Hungary i n a fo rm, w h i c h reflects the advances i n

the field o f nomenclature.

RESULTS

The present checklist enumerates 164 species and 5 varieties. I t i n

cludes data published i n various papers and unpublished records f rom the

collection preserved i n the Botanical Department o f the Hungarian Natura l

H i s t o r y M u s e u m (BP). I n the collection o f BP altogether 1,642 capsules o f

M y x o m y c è t e s collected i n the present te r r i tory o f Hungary are deposited.

The most frequent species found i n Hungary are listed i n Table 1. Based on

the collection data Lycogala epidendrum is the most frequently occurr ing

species o f Myxomycètes i n Hungary. These data also reveal that the 21 most

frequent species comprise more than 60% o f the whole collection. O n the

other hand, nearly ha l f o f the species are k n o w n f rom a single local i ty or a

few sites only.

T h e species names included i n this paper are arranged in alphabetic

order. Each entry begins w i t h the current name o f the taxon ( in boldface).

Synonym names, i f any, are i n brackets. I n general, only those synonym

names are given w h i c h were published by Hungar ian authors earlier. A list

o f synonym names is presented at the end o f this paper i n the Appendix .

Sándor T ó t h , who worked for many years i n the Museum, enriched the

fungus collection w i t h invaluable materials. A considerable part o f the M y x o

mycètes material was collected and ident i f ied (or collected by others and

ident i f ied) by h i m . I should l ike to dedicate this paper for his 90th bir thday.
