Our core function is representation, which means we dedicate almost all of our resources to making sure your voice gets heard in the University, that your rights as a student are upheld and you get the most out of your degree. You might be interested in volunteering, joining one of our sports clubs or societies, attending a ‘give it a go’ session, joining our gym, working for us or attending some of our fantastic events. Everything we do is led by students, for students.

We exist so that your voice gets heard in the University and beyond. To do this in the quickest and most simple way possible we have a large network of students who gather your views and help make changes to the Union and University as a result.
Every student that’s part of this network has been elected; this ensures they truly represent you and other students at Anglia Ruskin. What does this network look like?
You could be a Rep, a member of the Exec, a Club or Society Committee member as long as your fellow students vote for you. We’re a democratic organisation, which means everyone who runs the Union is elected and all decisions are made by our members through voting in elections, councils and referenda. When we say we’re member led, we truly are led by you, our members.
The Union also employs permanent staff who run the Union’s services like the shop, bar, gym, volunteering service and advice service. The staff also help the Exec make changes and gather the views of students. As the Union is a charity it has a Trustee Board which is made up of the 5 full time members of the Exec, external trustees who are experts in business and strategy, and student trustees who ensure the views of students are heard.

You said: you would like better access to specialist software on campus and at home.We: lobbied the University and worked with Anglia Ruskin Teaching and Learning/ISMS to find solutions.As of September 2011 you will be able to access your University desktop from anywhere in the world including access to specialist photo and audio editing software, applications.
You said: The Cambridge library was a difficult environment to study in and improvements needed to be made.We: Lobbied and won more investment for air conditioning, better lighting and clear signage for silent/group working zones in Cambridge and Chelmsford. The Library has since invested £100,000 in more books and resources. An additional £50,000 was spent on new computers and printers to increase access. Opening hours for learning labs have increased and we continue to work with Peterborough students to discuss and lobby on opening times.
You said: social space on all campuses was poor and there were too few water fountains.We: Lobbied the Estates and Facilities department and won investment in open access spaces like the Tindal Café (Chelmsford) and the Common Room at Guild House (Peterborough).More seating and outside furniture has been placed around all campuses and water fountains were installed around all University buildings.

‘Opinion Poll’. This is where you get to choose what campaign we should focus on for the coming
year. Students wanted a focus on improving employability
As a result we developed an employability strategy which outlines
ways that you can get the extra-curricular experience you need to make you more employable after
graduation.
Because of this strategy £40,000 was invested by the ALSS Faculty and the
Faculty of Science and Technology into equipment for the SU Academy. This equipment allows students to get hands on experience working in a live music environment as part of
their course.
The five full time Executive officers spent a total of over 3100 hours in University meetings making the student voice count where it matters

You said: There was a lack of community on campus.We: took control of Volunteering to offer you more opportunities to meet people and we won extra funding for Clubs and Societies.
You said: University Accommodation was poor value for money and improvements needed to be made to quality and customer service.We: Presented your feedback to the University alongside research of comparative Universities and other feedback. The University has identified Accommodation as a key area for improvement and we will continue to lobby and support you in this area.

This year students nationally faced the
biggest change to Higher and Further Education in history
With sweeping cuts from government
and a huge increase in tuition fees,
over 200 Anglia Ruskin students
joined the 50,000 strong crowd at
Demo 2010 to demonstrate against
the Government’s plan to lift the cap
on tuition fees.
We worked closely with the National Union of Students (NUS) to lobby MPs to vote against the fee increase, meeting with Members of Parliament in London and constituencies local to Anglia Ruskin. We were successful in Cambridge in this task, with Julian Huppert re-signing the NUS Pledge to vote AGAINST the increase in fees on the 10th November.
You said: Feedback on your assessments was often difficult to read and understand.We: teamed up with Anglia Ruskin Teaching and Learning to find out how we could improve feedback.Thanks to your voice we lobbied the University who agreed that all feedback must be typed and follow a consistent format by 2012.
You said: IT at Anglia Ruskin was poor and needed huge investment.We: Lobbied for an additional £20,000 investment into the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and online quiz tools. We have also started to form focus groups to gather your voice, fed directly to the VLE project. Investment is being made into my.anglia to improve communication and make timetables/tasks easier to access. More open access IT has been made available on all campuses and for much longer including some specialist labs.

ElectionOctober
All students get the chance to elect the representatives from their Faculty and
campus. The students elected in October work voluntarily on a part time basis. Their job is to be the voice of their campus. The positions are
Vice President, Vice Communications Officer, Vice Academic Affairs Officer, Vice Student
Experience Officer in Cambridge, Chelmsford, Peterborough and Fulbourn, as well as Faculty
Officers for FHSCE, ALSS, LAIBS and S&T on every campus where there are these Faculties.
In total 28 positions are up for grabs.
March Stand for a full time officer position,
campaign and win the votes of your fellow students and get elected. The elections in
March are for the full time officers; President, Communications, Academic Affairs and two Student Experience positions. You’ll need
to take a year out of University, or do it just after you’ve finished, and you’ll be paid
£16,000 for your year in office.
Being part of the Exec gives you skills, training and responsibilities that really can help improve your chances of finding employment after University.
Not everyone can say they’ve lead a charity with 30,000+ members before they’ve even graduated, but now is your chance!

We co-ordinate the student representation system and work alongside the University to ensure that students are represented throughout the institution.
What are Student Reps?Some of the most important people in the University: they are elected by other students to be their voice. Student Reps sit on committees and attend meetings with staff to tell them what students think about their University experience. Every year group of every pathway should have at least one Student Rep.
Could you be a Student Rep?If you care about the quality of your educational experience (remember you are paying for it!), about how you are being taught and the facilities and support that Anglia Ruskin University provides for you, as a Student Rep you can influence decision making on those issues. How much work is it?
As much as you want it to be; but as a minimum:
(1) All Student Reps should attend their own Programme Committee (your pathway will be part of a ‘Programme’ of related pathways). There is one every semester and they last 1 – 2 hours. There are other meetings – we will let you know when they are happening – and you can get involved with these if you want to.
(2) It is an important part of your role that you ask other students who are studying on your pathway what their views are, that you represent those views and feed back on outcomes.
(3) Your Student Rep Coordinator will send you regular updates and we ask that you check your emails regularly and give us feedback.
(4) All student reps are expected to complete and return the short Student Rep Survey that the Student Rep Coordinators send out towards the end of the academic year.
How do I get elected as a Student Rep?
During your first few weeks at University someone from the Students’ Union or one of your lecturers will talk to you about representation. Your Programme Leader will hold an election in the first few weeks – if not, come and see us in the SU office.
How will I know what to do?
The SU employs Student Rep Co-ordinators to support and train Student Reps. They are very knowledgeable and provide guidance to Reps to help them to get the best from their role.

You can find us in the SU Offices in the Tindal Building (Chelmsford), Helmore Building (Cambridge), Guild House (Peterborough) and next to the Student Common Room (Fulbourn) – if you don’t see us at one of your sessions in the first couple of weeks, come and say hello!

Previously activities have ranged from learning sign language to rock climbing, cheese & wine tasting and website development, along with trips to Brighton, London, Thorpe Park and West End shows.

So what’s on offer if you want to do more at University in your spare time other than study in the library? Why not get involved in a little bit of extra-curricular activity during your time here, make some new friends & get some extra skills for your CV – join a Club or Society!
We have over 80 sports clubs and societies at Anglia Ruskin so there’s something for everyone.However if you can’t find something for you then set up your own! All you need is 10-15 people interested in the same activity. Come and speak to Emily or Conor (Student Experience Officers) to find out how to get started.
If you like your sport, or just want a fun way to keep fit, we’ve got it covered, from Rugby to Basketball, Volleyball to Rowing or even Martial arts, Dance, Cheerleading, Ultimate Frisbee & loads more. Don’t worry you don’t have to be a pro, beginners are more than welcome.

Need to enhance your CV? Get some fantastic CV skills whilst having fun by getting involved in running a club or society. All clubs and societies are run by students; becoming a committee member gives you skills you won’t get anywhere else. Committee members are voluntary roles so your hours spent volunteering can be recognised by our volunteering accreditation scheme so every hour you put in gets noticed and can be added to your CV!

Cambridge GymIn Cambridge, we run a fully equipped gym in the Helmore building which provides the perfect setting to get fit, unwind and socialise. The gym staff are affiliated to the Register of Exercise Professionals, whilst the gym itself has achieved the Fitness Industry Association standard to ensure you receive the best possible care whilst exercising. We pride ourselves on offering a friendly, professional environment which is key to helping you achieve your fitness goals.
The gym is equipped with a range of cardiovascular equipment such as Concept Rowers, LifeFitness cross-trainers, treadmills, and cycles. The resistance section has Nautilus fixed station equipment providing a total body workout. There is also a free weights area with dumbbells ranging from 2.5 - 35 kg, a Smith Bench Press and Cable Crossover. We also have a specific stretching area to help improve your flexibility, work your core abdominals or lower back muscles. The gym also offers changing, showering and locker facilities.
To help support your training sessions we also offer the following services to enhance your success in achieving your fitness goals: Personal Gym Programmes / Fitness Evaluations / Personal Training / Aerobics Classes

Our Apple Regional Training Centres (RTC) focus on improving students’ creativity and computer skills by using Apple technology. We’re the first Students’ Union in the country to become an Apple RTC. This collaboration provides you with an environment where you can enhance your learning through top of the range technology and help you to progress further in your studies.

We run training sessions to help encourage students to become more advanced in video making, podcasting, as well as Numbers, Pages and Key Note, Apple’s equivalent to Excel, Word and Power Point.
The sessions will benefit all students and it’s especially useful for trainee teachers to explore how technology can break down barriers between different ability groups, and between the classroom and the outside world. The Macs are available to use during the day from 9am-5pm in the Student Activity Centres. (When training sessions are taking place availability may vary). The training centres are based in our Student Activities Centres on the first floor
of the Tindal Building in Chelmsford and the first floor of the Helmore building in Cambridge (next to the gym).
Look out for the Student Activities Coordinator who will be in the centres and able to help with any Apple queries you may have.

What is the SU Advice Service?It is a free service that is completely independent from the University. The people who work there are employed by the Students’ Union, not Anglia Ruskin University.
The service has a quality mark awarded by the Legal Services Commission, which means that we have a Code of Practice, ensuring that you receive a high standard of guidance.
What problems do students take to the Advice Service?
Advisers are trained to help students with a whole range of issues: from helping to resolve a grievance relating to their educational experience; assisting if things go wrong in University accommodation; advising on an academic appeal; providing guidance on the University’s regulations; accompanying students to meetings and hearings; or just providing a listening ear.
Who are the Advisers?They are permanent members of Students’ Union staff who have been specifically trained to advise Anglia Ruskin University students. All of the Advisers have worked previously in an advisory capacity and have a wealth of knowledge and experience..
Who do the Advisers work with?
Advisers have access to other departments and agencies both within the University and externally. When appropriate, and with the student’s permission, they are able to liaise with the Student Advisers allocated to Faculties, who help students with Faculty-specific issues, and with Student Services Advisers, who provide learning support, counselling, financial assistance and careers guidance. Often a student has a whole raft of issues and the Advisers will give them time to sift through these so that the appropriate help may be accessed.

The Advice Service produces a range of leaflets. The ‘academic’ leaflets aim to interpret the rules and regulations of the University in a user-friendly way and the ‘welfare’ leaflets aim to provide basic help – a full list is shown below. How do I arrange to see an Adviser?
Students may telephone, write to, e-mail or visit the Advice Service in person. Advisers respond to students promptly – over the nine month period of the 2009-10 academic year, 98% of requests for appointments received a reply within one working day. Students from Fulbourn and Peterborough are assisted by the Cambridge campus Advisers and appointments via telephone and email are routinely provided. Students from the University’s UK and international partner colleges may seek assistance relating to academic issues and this is provided via the Cambridge campus Advice Service.
Categories of assistance
Advisers worked hard to assist students to ensure that their voices were heard and this had a direct impact on retention, a factor that has been acknowledged by senior members of the University. The main category of casework is related to academic issues but Advisers also assisted students with:•Health and personal concerns•Financial problems•Accommodation issues•Employment rights
