The Language Tree K components are designed to be used flexibly, in line with the teacher’s preferred approach and the ability of the class.
Student’s Book: the stories, rhymes and expository texts in the Student’s Book should be used in conjunction with the ‘on-the-page’ teacher’s notes. This will help pupils to develop and practise important reading, listening, speaking and comprehension skills which include:
• talking about stories, rhymes and information they have read or listened to
• retelling stories• using pictures to make up their
own versions of a story• expressing opinions and feelings• showing that they understand the
content of texts by asking and answering questions
• understanding pictorial information• using titles and illustrations to predict
subject matter, events and endings• ordering a series of pictures to
tell a story in sequence• distinguishing between real and not real• drawing on personal experience and
prior knowledge to help them understand new information
• knowing that print carries a message• developing literal and inferential
comprehension skills• identifying cause and effect
Introduction
• becoming aware of different types of texts• identifying main ideas• naming the letters of the alphabet• reading one-syllable, high frequency
words (sight vocabulary).
There are specific teaching suggestions on every page. Before reading, help pupils to make connections to their prior experience and to predict what the text will be about based on the title and the illustrations. During reading, focus on ‘making meaning.’ Help pupils to look for clues in the illustration and the context and to guess unfamiliar words.
Text that is presented like this: Read aloud: is for the teacher to read aloud to the pupils.Words in bold type in the teacher’s notes, for example predicting outcomes, refer to important reading skills, which are learnt and practised by the suggested activity.
Workbook K: use the activities to teach or reinforce skills arising from the story or passage in the Student’s Book. Use the skills index at the end to help you to plan your lesson.
Online Teacher’s resources: these offer suggestions for planning and integrating your language work using Language Tree. They include further teaching points and printable worksheets; suggestions for differentiation work, homework and project work; ideas for using information technology and much more.
