What is a Controlled Product?

» Controlled products are products that can be hazardous

» There are six (6) classes of controlled products

˃ Class A: Compressed Gas

˃ Class B: Flammable and Combustible Material

˃ Class C: Oxidizing Material

˃ Class D: Poisonous and Infectious Material

Division 1: Materials Causing Immediate and Serious Toxic Effects

Division 2: Materials Causing Other Toxic Effects

Division 3: Biohazardous and Infectious Material

˃ Class E: Corrosive Material

˃ Class F: Dangerously Reactive Material

What is a Controlled Product?

» Items that are not controlled under WHMIS are those controlled by a different Government Act.

What is a Controlled Product?

Labeling System

» There are two (2) types of labels used under WHMIS˃ Supplier Label

These labels are provided by the supplier to identify the product The labels must include:

1. Product identifier2. Hazard Symbol3. Risk Phrases4. Precautionary Statements5. First Aid Measures6. Supplier Identification7. Reference to MSDS

The supplier labels are attached to the container that the chemical arrives in and is stored in.

˃ Workplace Label: These labels are affixed to containers used for the preparation of

chemicals. These are the labels students will see most often. The workplace label must include:

1. Product identifier2. Safe Handling Information and PPE required3. Reference to MSDS

» MSDS is an abbreviation for…˃ Material Safety Data Sheet

» An MSDS is a …˃ Technical bulletin providing specific hazard information, safe handling

information, and emergency procedures for a controlled product.

» An MSDS is provided by a supplier.

» The MSDS must be less than 3 years old

» An MSDS must have at least 8 (or 9) sections including:

1. Product Information2. Hazardous Ingredients3. Physical Data4. Fire and Explosion Hazard5. Reactivity Data6. Toxicological Properties7. Preventative Measures8. First Aid Measures9. (MSDS Preparation Info)

» As a worker you would use an MSDS sheet if you needed to look up information on PPE, how to handle the product, needed first aid information wanted to know the hazards associated with the product.

Worker Training Programs

» Workers (Students and Teachers) must be trained and then re-trained in WHMIS on a yearly basis.

» A worker’s responsibilities include understanding˃ WHMIS labels˃ WHMIS symbols˃ Classification of controlled products˃ MSDS˃ Storage of chemicals˃ Use and handling of the specific controlled products they are using

» Students must pass a quiz on the information in this presentation by 80% before they may perform any lab that contains a controlled product.

» This quiz is kept as documentation of your training.

˃ Students should know the following terms as part of their training

Corrosive – the eating away of flesh or metal in a chemical reaction

Flammable – the ability to catch fire

Oxidizing – the ability of a substance to assist in the burning of a material when exposed to oxygen

Reactive – the ability of a substance to react violently (by itself) when knocked or exposed to temperature or pressure
