Why did you choose Tarleton State University? I chose TSU because I participated in Upward Bound in high school since freshmen year in high school. I fell in love with the campus and I felt that I did not need to look at any other college or university. Everything that I wanted and needed could be found here at Tarleton. I felt the need to attend a university with traditions, special events, and friendly people!

What about the professors? The professors are very interactive with their students! If you take time to talk to them, they will definitely take time to talk to you! My favorite class so far has been my general business course (GB 103). The professor is amazing! She is fun and is very understanding of the freshmen experience! Her name is Dr. Joanna Shaw.

What events or activities have you attended? I attended the Midnight Breakfast (for Purple Pan-cakes), Tailgating, and I also volunteered to pass out information for Career Exploration Days. I also attend all of the SSMI activities.

W H AT I S S U P P L E M E N TA L I N S T R U C T I O N ( S I ) ? : Supplemental Instruction, also known as SI, is a free service offered to students. A student who has already taken and received an A in the course holds review sessions throughout the week for the students currently in the course.

H O W H A S S I H E L P E D Y O U B E C O M E A M O R E S U C C E S S F U L S T U D E N T ?I have attended SI for Math courses, Ag. Economics, Microbiology and more, all with ex-cellent results! I am also currently the SI leader for Physiology of Reproduction in Animals. I like to know that a service that tremendously helped me is also helping others students!

What are your favorite activities? My two favorite activities so far have been tailgating and the purple-out picnic.

What are your future plans? I would like to work at Tarleton in the business office. I think it would be a great experience, because of the staff! I go there all the time and they are great. I would put my skills and knowledge into practice in that environment.

Where do you work on campus? I work in Student Success and Multicultural Initiatives, where I work at the front desk, run errards, answer telephone calls, and take messages. I love it! It is my first job.

New Developments in Student Disability Services

New Development #1 - Partnering with Student Success Programs and Student Counseling Center to train ADHD CoachesCollege students often struggle with managing their own time and organizing their study materials, an issue that is amplified for those diagnosed with ADHD. In the past, students with ADHD requesting a coach or an accountability partner to provide support in time and resource management have been referred to existing resources that were not designed with their specific needs in mind. In order to fill this gap, Student Disability Services is partnering with Student Success Programs and the Student Counseling Center to train student mentors to serve as coaches based upon a program designed specifically for college students with ADHD. We are excited to share resources and to provide the mentees and mentors with this valuable experience. New Development #2 - Partnering with Student Counseling Center to provide evaluations for ADHD and Learning DisabilitiesStudent Disability Services is also partnering with the Student Counseling Center to provide psychological evaluations for students who believe they may have a learning disorder or ADHD. Dr. Stephanie Robertson, Director of the Student Counseling Center, is a psychologist with significant experience in this type of evaluation and is very eager to make this important service available to our students. We will be providing funds for the purchase of the materials needed to complete the evaluations, and Dr. Robertson has agreed to do one evaluation each month. This is an invaluable resource to students who may not have the financial means to access psychological services, and we truly appreciate Dr. Robertson’s willingness to allocate the highly sought after resources of the Student Counseling Center to this partnership. New Development #3 - New lab space will be up and running by the end of the semesterIf you stop by Math 201, you will see some changes at the end of our hallway. 201D is undergoing a facelift that will repurpose the former storage room into a second testing lab for Student Assessment Services. We have purchased desks and computers for 8 new stations that will help to accommodate our continued growth and relieve the loss of access to a lab due to reallocation of space.

Lewis Straughter, a Senior MENtal Freedom member and resident artist, spoke at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Dinner on January 29 and introduced our speaker, Mr. Eddie Francis. He also completed an art piece using typography which had Dr. King’s picture created from the words of his “I have a Dream” speech. Lewis will graduate in May with a degree in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Digital Media.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion hosted Ally sessions on various Tarleton campuses, bringing the total Ally number to nearly thirty so far this year. Our final Ally session for Spring is April 19 and you can sign up online at www.tarleton.edu/diversity. Additionally, ODI has hosted events about Black History Month, Women’s History, and is celebrating Diversity Week April 22-26 with various activities, panels, and an oratorical and spoken word poetry competition. The theme is Unity in our Community and we will celebrate what brings us all together. The office led Multi-cultural Ambassadors on a culture excursion to New Orleans over Spring Break and students will present on their projects during Diversity Week.

Lewis, along with Lorenzo Puente, Sean Guinyard, Andre McQuitty presented on “The Pact” and their experiences in MENtal Freedom at the Diversity Leadership Confer-ence at Sam Houston State in February.

New Developments in Upward Bound

New Development #1 - Tarleton Upward Bound Alumnus Honored

The Tarleton Upward Bound Project is proud to announce that former student and Tarleton alumnus, Jose Rios, has been recognized as a TRIO Achiever at this year’s TRIO State Conference on March 4th in Austin. This honor is given annually to outstanding former TRIO program participants as a way to congratulate these individuals and thank them for their inspiration to future TRIO students.

Rios was one of four TRIO alumni to be recognized at the 2013TRIO State Conference. The criteria for being selected as a TRIO Achiever includes having been a TRIO program participant who successfully completed a postsecondary program of study and has attained a position of high stature within his/her profession or has received recognition for outstanding academic achievement. In addition, TRIO project must have had an acknowledged and significant impact upon the honoree in obtaining his/her educational or professional objectives.

Rios is a 1997 graduate of Comanche High School who went on to graduate with a B.S. from Tarleton in 2001 and an M.B.A. from LeTourneau University in 2006. Rios has spent his career in education as he worked for five years for Talent Search Program at Texas State University. For the past six years, Rios has worked for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, where he has recently been promoted to Assistant Director of Community and Technical Colleges in the Division of Workforce, Academic Affairs and Research. THECB advises state legislators by collecting and analyzing financial, performance and enrollment data from higher education institutions to help lawmakers make policy and funding decisions at all institutions of higher education. New Development #2 - Upward Bound Participants Tour Colleges

Although we are always excited for our participants to attend Tarleton, the goal of the Upward Bound program is to help participants explore and find the right college for them. This year, the UB staff have taken groups of participants to several area community colleges and universities including the University of North Texas, the University of Texas at Arlington, Texas A&M University, Weatherford College, and Navarro College. During college tours, participants have an opportunity to see the campus and talk with admission and financial aid advisors. Participants also have the opportunity to network with other TRIO programs like Student Support Services that can provide academic support services that are so crucial to incoming Freshmen.

Future Development #1 - Upward Bound Summer Dates

The Tarleton Upward Bound summer residential program and summer bridge program dates have been set for Sunday, June 2nd through Wednesday, July 3rd. Summer informational meeting is set for Saturday, May 4th and will provide the class offerings for summer as well as the activities schedule and introduce summer staff.

Future Development #2 - Upward Bound Participants to Participate in Leadership Institute

On Saturday, May 18th the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute will conduct a leadership seminar for program participants. Participants will learn about leadership styles, problem solving, and teamwork and how to apply these skills in organizing community service projects. Our goal is to coordinate a community service project during the summer residential program.
