This was easily one of the greatest investments in my architectural education and of my life. So much architecture and culture was taken in within a relatively short amount of time, and it was only scratching the surface of what the world has to offer. I now look at the world very differently and view design from a different perspective than I had prior to this trip.

During my time in France I grew very fond of the space between buildings. Plazas and courtyards, things you primarily read about in books in Middle America, are everywhere in the city with large numbers of people filling them. They create a much needed relief from the city’s congestion, and the architecture designed to frame these spaces is awe-inspiring.

During our independent travel, two classmates and I chose to visit Germany’s capital for a few days. Berlin is such a contemporary city with little pockets of its history remaining after the Second World War. Among all the wonderful architecture we visited, the Reichstag was definitely of my favorites. I was even privileged enough to receive permission to go up in the dome of The Reichstag. I analyzed the structure to determine if the renovation by Lord Norman Foster added to or took away from the existing architecture. My analysis concluded that Foster had done a superb job.

After our independent travel we met up with the Bilbeisi’ in Rome to continue our European study. The history of Rome is so vast and rich. The preserved ruins surrounded by the bustling metropolis display the superb architectural history of the city. Its world renowned baroque structures demonstrate the power and influence that the Catholic Church had which for centuries controlled architecture.

Every two years, Professor Mohammed and Suzanne Bilbeisi organize the Urban USA trip to New York City and Washington D.C. in order to allow students to gain new experiences

This trip, along withProfessor Mohammed’s guidance, furthered my journaling and sketching skills tremendously. After visiting these cities I obtained a far better idea of just how large and diverse the United State really is..

The American University of Paris (AUP) is a private, independent, and accred-ited liberal arts and sciences university in Paris, France. Founded in 1962, the university is one of the oldest American institutions of higher education in Eu-rope.

The aim of this project is to add to the AUP and ,more importantly, create a central point for the university, which has buildings spread throughout Paris. The very nature of Paris demands that this project pay special attention to the pedestrian element, as well as provide pleasant public gathering spaces with inspiring architecture.

The university library in this project became a focus space where more in depth design took place. A scale sectinal model was constructed to further explore the spacial qualities and system integration of hte space.

Homelessness is a growing problem in the United States, with 1 in 190 people having used a homeless shelter in 2008. It is from this growing dilemma that a homeless shelter focused on the assistance of homeless families is derived.

This project was a solo project and lasted for an entire semester. The studio focused on the integration of structure and mechanical systems, as well as the design development process.

Safety was my utmost concern, thus this project was designed to be a safe, protected place that allows the users to heal and transition back into mainstream society.

During the beginning stages of this project, I focused on thumbnail sketches and small paper models. These were later followed later by sectional sketches exploring elevation changes and passive heating and cooling.

During the design development of this project we focused on the dining area of the facility. Material packets were put together for the space. and the lighting, structural, and mechanical systems were more rigorously integrated into the design.

This is the first in a series of projects based in Puerto Rico. It is aimed towards their growing industry of tourism

This group project consists of Joey Valliere, Andrew Sedersten, Nicole Scott, Tyler Holmes, and myself. Nicole, Tyler, and I focused on the cruise ship terminal while Joey and Andrew focused on the aquarium element. The project also included a small element of master planning.

I focused on the master planning aspects for the project. My objective was to create an environment which would be enjoyable for the tourist, but also a place the locals could use and enjoy. The marina, market plaza, and park were added to further this design goal.

Laying at the northeast of the municipality of Guaynabo is the San Patricio sector. The area’s name finds its origin in the Homonymous shopping mall, San Patricio Plaza. San Patrico Plaza was the first shopping mall built in the Caribean and South America. After years of DEVELOPMENT the mall has been injected with more American ideas. The site itself expresses this progress with large parking lots surrounding fast food chains or strip malls. The object of this project is to revitalize the San Patrico Sector of Puerto Rico.

This project was a design competition within the studio. The wining team’s design would have the privilege of being the entire studio’s master plan for the final project.

Groups of six were created for this project. My group consisted of Matt Callan, Tyler Holmes, Jessica Shelton, Elizabeth Wilson, Brian Miller, and myself.

The increase of pedestrian traffic was the driving goal for nearly all design decisions. Pedestrian bridges and access to more public transportation were proposed to relieve the car congestion. The “pedestrian weave” was devised to create more options for pedestrian flow by breaking down the street blocks. It had the additional effect of creating more store frontage.

The site was broken down into three main zones with the idea of zones being mixed use. The idea was for each zone to have mixed use and this would create pedestrian interest in all areas of the site.

Our master plan scheme was chosen by the competition jury we were then asked to revise the plan with the professor’s suggestions. Larger public spaces were added and streets wer added to help control traffic. This is the final version of the master plan for the class’s final project.

After designing the master plan the studio was broken down into three man groups. My group consisted of Matt Callan, Tyler Holmes, and myself. The site which we choose for our project was arguably the most difficult with it spanning the highway connecting the existing residential area to the newly designed San Patrico site.

It was decided this connection would also be the mall adding another element of difficulty to the project

This project posed so many different design issues, so several studies were done and several models were created during the preliminary design process. Our biggest concern was how to re-introduce pedestrian activity into the master plan using our project. Designing the mall as a bridge was a very early decision.

Restaurants were placed on the ground level to create activity and draw in the public.

The second levels of the restaurants were to be bars, in order to bring entertainment to the pedestrian connector under the main mall.

The main level of the mall includes a public space that utilizes the island between the highway junction. This space would hold a wide range of events and activities, and it is also where the entry of the art gallery is located. 3

The presence that our building could potentially have on the large plaza in the master plan was always a major concern. Our solution was to create a projection of the building into the plaza, drawing attention to the connector’s main entry.

My education has presented me with many different approaches and philosophies for design, but by far the most important lesson I have learned is that the human element is the most important element to consider. Some of the greatest achievements and failures of architecture in the 20th century revolve around this simple point of designing for people. OSU has taught me this point well, and I intend to put this lesson to good use in my further endeavors.
