    Strive to provide a place where patients,visitors and staff are safe from harm and their property is protected from theft or damage.

    In contrast to a police department that reacts to problems that occur, the Security Department provides a presence to prevent problems from occurring.

  • SJMH SECURITY DEPARTMENT

    Services Provided: 24 hour patrol of buildings and grounds Personal escorts Manage patient valuables, property, lost

    and found items Issue employee IDs and parking permits Help to manage internal and external

    emergency response

    How can you help to maintain a safe and secure environment? Limit access to restricted areas and

    check ID badges as appropriate Secure keys and valuables Wear your ID badge at eye level at all

    times when working. Report suspicious persons/activity

    immediately to Security

    Security Sensitive Areas Areas that require increased security due to

    Recognizing and Responding to Violence Some common violence indicators include:

    Raised or lowered voice Angry, loud, and forceful speech Agitation, nervousness, pacing Threats against your personal safety

    Recognizing and Responding to Violence Responding to Violence:

    Maintain your professionalism. This may help to de-escalate the behavior

    Maintain a safe distance from the individual Listen to what they are saying and do not

    interrupt Respond to their concerns

    If the aggressive behavior continues, move out of the area and notify your manager and Security!

    Ask questions concerning any operation or procedure when in doubt

    Staff are responsible for reporting unsafe conditions in their work area Report unsafe equipment, working conditions, or actions of other employees to your unit manager or to the Safety Office at x 23368

    Injuries to staff must be reported to employee

    Health Services via a complete an Employee Incident Form.

    Tornado Watch-weather conditions increase the risk of a tornado

    Tornado Warning- a tornado has been sighted in the

    immediate area.

    YELLOW - Disaster PINK - Infant/Child Abduction TEAL - Patient is unaccounted for by their

    primary care giver and assistance is needed in order to locate the individual

    AT FIRE SCENE R.A.C.E.

    AWAY FROM FIRE SCENE

    Close doors Clear hallways

    Know the LOCATION of:

    Fire extinguishers

    Fire alarm pull stations

    Fire exits

    LOWER All items must be at least 18 from the

    ceiling to allow sprinklers to function normally

    WORKPLACE VIOLENCE Immediate Threat

    Move those in danger to safety Dial 911 Ask operator to page Violet White to

    your location to secretly send security to your location.

    Delayed Threat Notify Manager and Security

  • CODE WHITE

    HOSTAGE SITUATION Safely exit and Dial 911 to report the

    emergency. Notify charge nurse or supervisor Cooperate with hostage taker, do not try to

    overpower them.

  • CODE YELLOW

    Internal Casualties or injuries

    have occurred due to damaged buildings, severe weather, explosion, etc.

    External A community event

    has occurred which results in large amounts of victims coming to our hospital

    Report to the unit manager for instructions

    DISASTER

  • TORNADO WATCH

    Close drapes and shades in your area

    Check on patients Weather conditions

    increase the risk for a tornado to occur.

    Ambulatory go to inner halls

    Non-ambulatory cover w/blankets

    Report to manager for instructions and listen For Updates

  • CODE PINK

    INFANT/CHILD ABDUCTION Dial 911 to report the Code Pink

    emergency. Keep the person in sight. Watch hallways/stairs in your area. Be alert to suspicious people/activity. Abductor almost always visits area

    beforehand

  • BOMB THREAT

    Keep caller on line and ask questions about location, time of detonation, etc.

    Dial 911 to report the Bomb threat Security/police secure area

    Evacuate only if instructed to do so

  • Homeland Security

    Forms of possible threats: Biological

    Chemical

    Radiological

    Explosives

  • CODE TEAL

    Informs all Staff, Physicians and Volunteers that a patient is unaccounted for by their primary caregiver and assistance is needed in order to locate the individual

    Report code teal to the operator and provide as much information as possible. Notify other in the area by providing a description of the patient and asking them to asist in the search.
