Private SectorFor anyone preferring not to live on campus or in a University-managed property, the private sector has a good choice ofshared houses, flats and bedsits in which you have a room andshare a kitchen, bathroom and sometimes a living room withother students. The owners have agreed that their property canbe included in the accommodation list available for studentsattending the University. Properties vary in size, and are locatedmostly in areas popular with students.

The University can help you make arrangements by providing alist of private accommodation, which is available on the day ofenquiry. The Accommodation Office staff are also happy todiscuss accommodation issues over the telephone. Prospectivestudents can access the accommodation available in the privatesector via the Internet at www.scarboroughstudentpad.co.uk.Studentpad is an external website designed to advertiseaccommodation to the student population. The site is updatedand maintained by the Accommodation Office at the University ofHull, Scarborough Campus. Studentpad provides students withan easy, clear, transparent service.

Scarborough Campus Accreditation SchemeThe accreditation scheme ensures all landlords are adhering tothe current Health and Fire Safety regulations and raises theawareness of related legislative requirements.

All properties that are advertised on the website have beeninspected by Scarborough Borough Council’s EnvironmentalHealth Department and the Accommodation Office.

The aim of the scheme is to encourage good practice amongprivate sector landlords who are letting properties toScarborough students.

When renting any form of private sector accommodation, thestudent signs a contract with the owner/agent (normally for thefull academic year including the Christmas and Easter vacations)and is, therefore fully accountable to such owner/agent underthe law.

If a student has any doubt about the forms of contract, theAccommodation Office will try to assist, but students are free totake independent legal advice.

No responsibility can be attached either to the University or theAccommodation Office regarding such contracts or the suitabilityor safety of the accommodation. It is, therefore, in your owninterests to come to Scarborough, view what is available, makeyour own checks and decisions as to the safety of the property, and meet your prospective landlord/lady to discuss contracts.

PoliciesPolicy on the Allocation of PlacesThe University of Hull at Scarborough can currently provideUniversity owned or managed accommodation for approximately400 single students: 213 in Cayley Halls of residence andapproximately 200 in University managed shared studenthouses, plus a good selection of private sector accommodationwhich is registered with the University.

In Cayley Hall and managed accommodation places will beallocated with a mixture of male and female students on all floors. Some of the smaller properties may be designated formature and/or postgraduate students.

Our accommodation is provided to benefit as many new studentsas possible. Applicants for our residences need to be aware thatthey will be living together as an integrated, tolerant and co-operative community. Students who have cultural, religious, medical, dietary or other requirements need to make a decisionbefore applying for a place in University accommodation as towhether or not this mixed environment may pose difficulties forthem. In self-catering accommodation some students’ diets andstores of foodstuffs are likely to include meat, including pork, and alcoholic drinks. Separate fridge/freezers, kitchen anddining areas are not available for residents preferring to operatein isolation from the general resident community.

Places in our accommodation are allocated in accordancewith the following list of priorities1. Students with disability2. New undergraduate students3. Continuing undergraduate students from overseas4. Postgraduate students from overseas5. Postgraduate students from within the UK6. Exchange students7. Continuing undergraduate students from the UK

1. Disabled students and those with declared and medicallycertified health problems are given first priority. We have apolicy of integrating students with a disability within ourgeneral student community.

Located on the main campus, Cayley Hall has rampedapproaches and a number of ground floor purpose-built easyaccess study bedrooms for students with disabilities. The‘DeafAlerter’ system has been installed in Block ‘A’ and ‘B’.Students with mobility considerations are advised to visit thecampus to assess its suitability for their individual needs.

It is recommended that applicants with a disability contactRosemary Laidlaw, Disability Support Adviser on 01723357215 or email [email protected] to discuss anyaccommodation needs. Making proper arrangements at anearly stage is very important.

Students with a disability who will require Universityaccommodation are requested to contact the AccommodationOffice as soon as they accept an offer (firmly or provisionally)

in order that the most appropriate accommodation can bereserved for them. Our contact number is 01723 357349 /357373 / 357245

2. The University of Hull Scarborough Campus has a stock ofresidential places reserved to meet the needs of virtually allnewly arriving unaccompanied undergraduates and mostinternational students, with the possible exception of a fewvisiting students and some ‘clearing’ candidates or very lateapplicants. In a normal year most applicants who qualify willbe offered accommodation (not necessarily in their firstchoice of residence – this depends on demand, which varieseach year). On occasions, where demand exceeds supply, later applicants will be directed to local guest houses whichare modestly priced by UK standards (charges payable by theindividual) until vacancies are identified in either University-owned accommodation, managed or directedaccommodation (usually within two weeks).

3. Undergraduate students from overseas – A stock ofaccommodation sufficient to meet the predicted needs of allnew and continuing unaccompanied undergraduate studentsfrom overseas is reserved for their use. Students admittedduring the later stages of our accommodation admissionsprocedure, after 1 September 2013, are advised that as timemoves on, available options become fewer and fewer untilour stock is fully let. If demand exceeds our capacity, thosewhom we cannot permanently accommodate on arrival will bedirected to local guest houses (charges payable by theindividual) until permanent places are found.

4. Postgraduate students from overseas – A small number ofrooms in University-managed accommodation will beallocated to postgraduate students coming directly fromoverseas. Applications for places should be submitted to theAccommodation Office. To be considered for University-managed accommodation you must have an unconditionalconfirmed offer to study here at the University of HullScarborough Campus and the Accommodation Office musthave received a completed accommodation application formand confirmation of payment of your room deposit before the1 September 2013. Postgraduate students who cannot beoffered accommodation will be assisted to locate privatesector accommodation.

5. Postgraduates from within the UK – The University haslimited accommodation available to postgraduates fromwithin the UK. When all accommodation has been allocatedthe Accommodation Office will provide assistance to findaccommodation in the private sector. They will be sentaccommodation lists of properties available and can be put intouch with other postgraduate students also studying atScarborough. All students are advised to visit Scarboroughbefore arranging their accommodation

Student living10

Page 13: Student Living Scarborough_2013-14

Student living 11

6. Exchange Students – A limited number of rooms in CayleyHall are reserved to meet the expected demand fromexchange students (for both full session and one-semesterapplicants). In the event of demand exceeding supply, laterarrivals may be directed to private sector accommodation.

7. Continuing undergraduate students – The Universityencourages continuing undergraduate students to take upplaces in University-managed student houses, and althoughhere at Scarborough the stock is limited some of the smallerhouses are offered to continuing students.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide accommodation forthe following

• Students with children, expectant mothers or studentsaccompanied by their family.

• Part-time or non-registered students – the Universityregrets that it is unable to provide accommodation forpart-time and non-registered students. Private sectorresidence is recommended. Council Tax implications needto be taken into account.

• Married couples – we do not provide accommodation formarried couples.

8. Your room allocation will only be held until 9 am on 25September 2013. Should you fail to collect your key by thisdeadline, your room will be re-allocated and your deposit maynot be refunded. Late arrivals will be assisted with temporaryaccommodation, allocated a permanent room if available, orassisted to find private sector accommodation.

Factors to take into considerationLocal students whose homes are within commuting distance ofthe campus are invited to contact the Accommodation Office forinformation and advice if they wish to take up Universityresidence.

Mature students: the residential environment preferred bymature students tends to be different from that which is enjoyedby younger undergraduates. Generally, Cayley Hall or the largerUniversity-managed properties would be unsuitable, althoughsome may wish to apply for one of the smaller managed houses, where rooms can be allocated to mature students.

Study away from Scarborough: students who are required tospend a year away from Scarborough as part of their course (forexample professional experience placements) are encouraged tocontact the Accommodation Office, before they depart to arrangeaccommodation for when they return.

Residence fees – 2013/2014Residence fees at the University are set each year by the SeniorManagement Team in readiness for the continuing students re-application procedure that takes place in mid January.
