BEST BUDDIES, Friends for Life! By: Emma Muhaimeen

A room filled with buddies, happiness, and joy. Secu-rity fills the air, a place where you can be yourself and not worry about who is there to judge you, because you won’t find those people here. Kindness is within the people and everyone feels safe and comfortable.

Best buddies is a program where a “buddy” in the program and a volunteer are matched as “buddies.” The goal of this program is to create a strong bond between two different people, create relationships which will not only last in school, but also out of school. Best Buddies is a positive, strong impact to our school which raises awareness.

In addition, Best Bud-dies was founded in 1898 by Anthony Shriver, and has gone around to over two thousand schools around the nation and more than 50 different coun-tries. The people in Best Bud-dies are there to be leaders, bring inspiration to others and make a difference. Volunteers of Best Buddies, Ashley Noon and Kailey Jackson say “I enjoy doing Best Buddies because it creates happiness, I love leaving my buddies company. Best Buddies is my happy place where I’m excited to help out and it makes me feel good about myself.”

Another volunteer of Best Buddies, Jenna Penella says Best Buddies is a wonderful program which “gives kids the chance to create long lasting relationships in and out of school.” Jenna believes that Best Buddies is “spreading the word that you can be friends with anyone you want no matter who they are.” The program has given her the oppor-tunity to do so.

Mrs. Newsome, a participant of Best Buddies says “Best Buddies is a “developing friendships between students and individuals.” She participates in the program because it “enriches the lives of students and adults. Best Buddies gives students the chance to grow and make friends.” Mrs. New-some enjoys “contributing happiness, and also “bringing awareness and breaking barriers.” The programs lets the school know that her students are “the same as everybody else’s, and also that they should make friends with all differ-ent people.”

During Best Buddies, the students do many activities such as: Secret Santa, gardening, cooking, socializing, etc. The program isn’t looking for anyone particular to join, Mrs.

Newsome says, “I would like anyone that is willing to join, I wish that everyone could join Best Buddies.”

A student in Best Buddies, Avani Shandilya says “Best Buddies is a program where nobody is discriminated just be-cause they are different…everybody is different.” Avani joined Best Buddies to “bring awareness,” her favorite thing about Best Buddies is that she can be herself and feels “comfortable, nobody is left out and kindness is spread around, I feel happy there.”

Dean Anthony says that Best Buddies is contrib-uting to our school by “showing how kids care and also it shows how people are making different friends that they may not have everyday classes with.” The Dean loves Best Buddies, she thinks it adds a lot of pros to our school such as “showing random acts of kindness that may not seem like a big deal, but it really does make a difference.” In conclusion, Best Buddies is a

brilliant program, and you should join no matter who you are. Spread the word!

The Mailman of the Future The online shopping website, Amazon, has been teasing making drone delivery to customers for a while now, and it is starting to become a reality. In the beginning, their commercial for Prime Air was a person finding a product on the website, tapping on the “Prime Air” button, and within 30 minutes a drone carrying a yellow box would arrive. The drones looked like many of the commercially available drones with sev-eral propellers (called an octocopter), but with a claw at the bottom for picking up and dropping cases of items ordered. In Novem-ber of 2015, Amazon made a new design that looks more unique than the original and they promise under 30 minute delivery.

The goals that the company has for the drones are a 10 mile range and a capacity for carrying a five pound pay-load. However, the new drones they have designed weigh about 55 pounds each! Also, Walmart has intentions on be-ginning testing of new drones used for doorstep delivery, but for all of the companies interested in drone delivery, they have several challenges in their way including technical

and mechanical difficulties, and regulatory challenges that they have to get by to be able to fly autonomous drones around the sky. However, this drone design is not the only one that Amazon is testing. They are using many different kinds of drones and they will use a variety of different air-

craft depending on the environment. It could be a dusty and sandy city that needs a resili-ent and dust resistant drone, or it could be in Seattle where Amazon is based and it is rainy, so it needs to stand up to wind and heavy rain.

In conclusion, Amazon and many other companies are working on new ways to

deliver small packages to customers in a shorter period of time than normal shipping. This may revolutionize the way that shipping is done if it works well and shows that they can achieve their goals when they really try to invent a revo-lutionary new concept. If this happens in the near future, around 2020, then it will make our lives much easier and be a much better way to order a book or bottle of shampoo within 30 minutes.

The Ideal First Car By: Brett Houston

The first time I thought about purchasing a car was when my Mom took me to the Chevrolet dealership. I was 13 years old, and I wanted to get an idea of how much money I need-ed to save. We looked at everything from electric cars, to sedans. That was when I realized I didn’t want a car; I wanted a truck. Not just any truck. I wanted a 2009 Ford F-150. It wasn’t too small to where it would cave in if something hit it, and it wasn’t too big that it would be scary to drive. It was the ideal first vehicle.

So what is the ideal first vehicle? That is the question that everyone asks himself or herself. It needs to be something that isn’t terrible on gas mileage, or has very high in-surance rates. Insurance is the key when buying a car. The more expensive the vehicle, it becomes very hard to have a new Mustang, and not have a higher insurance premium. Especially, when you are an inexperienced driver. For a male driver that is 16, the average premium for 1 year is $2,796, for driving a Ford F- 150. As you can see, paying your insur-ance premium is not a cheap expense.

Now we move on to gas mileage; the bigger the vehicle the

worse the gas mileage. For instance, if you had a truck, the gas mileage would be worse than a Honda Accord. The gas mileage is how many gallons of gas a car, or truck consumes for every mile. A smaller car, like a Honda Accord, may aver-age 34 miles per gallon. A truck like a Ford F-150 averages 18 miles to the gallon. You really want to pick out the most fuel-efficient car possible.

But don’t forget about the extras! A lot of cars today have extra features like Bluetooth, and

personal Wi-Fi hotspots. And don’t for-get about the interiors. There are lots of

interiors from cloth seats, to the leather. It is important to think about the inside of your car as

well as the body style of your car. You can have wood finishes on the outside, or plastic, it just depends on what you would like to spend.

Getting your first car can be a tremendous experience, as well as a very important responsibility. Every adult I have ev-er talked to said that it is a memorable experience to get your first car. They also say that it is also an experience that you will never forget!

Live A Healthy Lifestyle By: Hayden Beck and Jenna Pennella

Have you ever noticed yourself eating unhealthy things too often or not exercising enough? We are not ex-perts, but we can help you fix your problem! You don’t have to go on a strict diet or exercise 24/7 to live a healthy life-style. Being on diets that limit you to only 500 calories a day are not good for your body, and exercising all day will wear out your body. So how do you maintain a healthy lifestyle without these things? We will tell you how!

Healthy Eating Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t necessarily have to

start in the gym. It starts in the kitchen! We aren’t going to tell you that you have to cut out all your sweets and treats. You deserve that once in a while, but you have to make sure to be eating them in moderation. Make sure to keep track of everything you eat. Also, keep in mind, when going to res-taurants, not to eat until you physically cannot walk. Just eat until you are satisfied. Also if you are planning on eating dessert that night, do not fill up on your main course. When dessert does come to the table, make sure to share it with your family or friends. Desserts at restaurants are typically not meant to eat alone. That is why they give you multiple spoons! Also, don’t let looks be deceiving, because some things may look healthy when they are actually not. For ex-ample, if you ever happen to be at McDonald’s, don’t order the Southwest Crispy Chicken Salad! This salad has 480 calo-

ries with 24 grams of fat, while the Bacon McDouble Cheeseburger has 440 calories with 22 grams of fat. Crazy? Yes it is. For when you are eating at home, I know it is tempting to grab everything in your pantry. Do not do that!!! When you are eating a snack, eat fruit or a granola bar, not a three-course meal.

Exercise As we said, in the beginning, working out 24/7 is not

good for either. Since we are all around the ages 13-14, we mostly do sports such as lacrosse, soccer, cheerleading, and dance. Those are already great sources of exercise, but you usually have practice once or twice a week. We are all sup-posed to exercise at least 60 minutes a day. So if this means walking your dog or playing football with your friends you still get the same benefits. Make a fitness routine for your-self! This will motivate you to get into that healthy life style that will get you in shape. Just throw in some extra jumping jacks or squats and you will be good to go!

Doing all these things will help you get a healthy body. Having a good diet and exercise will increase your en-ergy level which leads to positive vibes! Remember, it is not all about being “skinny” or to look like a model. It is about having a healthy body with strong muscles and high energy! So, what is the first step you are going to take into your healthy lifestyle?

By: Alyssa Bacchus Dating is a way of learning what you like in people and how to show it, middle school dating is hot topic among students and parents. Nearly half the children from 11-14 are dating. Which is a major increase from prior years. Asking around Landrum gave a good idea of what the stu-dents here are thinking. A survey was given out to 31 students in 7th and 8th grade. The survey asked, “What’s the age most of your friends have their first serious relationship?” and the answers ranged from 12 to 17. Most of the students said 15 and the least said 12. Most of the girls voted for 15 and most of the boys said 14 and 13. The boys showed they wanted to date at a younger age, meanwhile the girls wanted to date at older ages. Most of the 7th graders said they would date from the ages of 12 to 14 but the 8th graders would rather date from 14- 16. Interesting, because the students in 7th grade claimed they wanted to date at ages close to theirs but the 8th graders were choosing to date 2 or 3 years from now. When asked who they share details about their relationship with there were two main answers; their friends and family were the main answers. Of course there are the individuals who said pets or that they don’t talk to anyone about their love life. Some even said “I don’t have a love life”. When asked if they’ve dated anyone in a serious relation-ship the about half said yes and the other half said no. but the sur-vey shows a lot of kids don’t talk to their parents about their “love life”. About 50% of the students don’t tell their parent anything about their love. About 25% tell their parents everything about in their life, and 20% tell their parents little.

5% say their par-ents monitor their love life. Other studies suggest Middle School dating is a bad idea. Pamela Orpinas, a child researcher at the University of Georgia, did an ex-periment involving students from 6th to 12th. The experiment fol-lows the students’ education and dating. The seven year study, in-volved over 700 students. Every year she would ask the students about their personal life, such as dating, friendships, and how much time they apply to school. Their teachers also had to rate the stu-dents success in school from high to low. The students who dated throughout middle school and high school have a decreasing score from their teachers. Some of the children who dated had a consist-ently low score from their teachers. The students who didn’t date had a consistently better score and they show a positive attitude to school. Not to say you can’t date and be an excellent scholar, but research shows that when one’s heart is focused on that special person, they tend too mentally check out when it comes to school. Not all relationships are damaging, some actually serve their purpose, to make the duo happy. Dating someone you likes can make dating a stress-free and fun thing. It’s also a way to figure out what you like in a person and to prepare one for a more serious relationship later on.

Movie of the Year!

By: Avani Shandilya

Landrum’s Harrison, Super Fan!

Our technology specialist here at Landrum, Mr. Harrison, super fans the recent movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, which released in theaters on December 18, 2015. According to a site, time.com, the movie has made about $220 million, with $85 million during its first weekend.

Mr. Harrison likes the movie be-cause it has a "futuristic setting" and that if you see it at an early age, it might stick with you, even as an adult. He has seen the mov-ie, The Force Awakens seven times because he doesn’t want to wait until the movie comes out on CDs, DVDs, and other porta-ble ways to carry the movie. All fans have a way to show their fandom, and Mr. Harri-son shows his by having a Star Wars sort of collection, saying "if anything appeals to me, I see no reason to not get it." and along with his collection of items for Star

Wars, he has posters at his house.

A lot of people don’t know what happens in the movies, but they seem to know the characters, with Mr. Harrison’s being Kylo Ren, the bad guy because he thinks that the concept of having the bad guy have trouble with the light side, rather than the usual good guy who needs to struggle with the bad side "is cool.” If he were a director of a Star Wars movie, he would choose to the book Heir of the Empire be-cause it's his favorite book, and he's read it over and over again. Now, if there were auditions for The Force Awakens, he would choose to Luke Skywalker because, "he's my favorite character of all time.”

Now instead of seeing Mr. Harrison as just our tech guy, we can also see that he is a really big fan of Star Wars. Just like many students here at

Landrum.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was probably the biggest movie release this year. Within in the first month Star Wars passed ‘’Titanic’’ for 2nd place in top grossing. As a Star Wars fan I had to watch this movie a few times. WARNING: There may be some spoilers ahead.

After Luke Skywalker disappears the First Order (antagonists) go hunting for the map to find him. On the plan-et Jakku, a BB-8 droid is given the last part of the map. He meets a girl named Rey. Rey is very questionable about the droid; she lets it stay one night at her house (a fallen AT-AT) the next morning they meet someone by the name of Finn who is believed to be part of the rebellion by Rey. The truth is that he is a Stormtrooper.

After they settle things, they are bombarded by the First Order they escaped on a “garbage” freighter known as

the “Millennium Falcon”. After they leave Jakku a larger freighter takes them. Soon comes Chewbacca and Han Solo. You’ll have to watch the movie if you want to see what hap-pens.

I give this movie a 9/10. The movie brings 3 to 4 decades of people to come watch the movie. Not only that the movie has a great plot and

leaves you biting your nails and hanging off the edge of your seat. Fellow student Julian Goodall rated the mov-ie a “10/10”. Based on opinion, the Star Wars franchise is the best movie of all time.

“Hey guys”, “what’s up” the stereotypical YouTube intro, and if you’re like me you’ve probably heard something like this a lot. There are millions of YouTube channels/youtubers to watch, but only some off them make it big.

How do YouTubers actually make money? When the channel has enough sub-scribers they can apply for the YouTube part-ner program. YouTube does take about 45 percent of the money made per every 1000th video watched with a pre-roll, but when you get billions of views the 45 percent thing seems so small. A pre-roll is that moment when you have to watch an ad first, before you can watch the video (so annoying). When a pre-roll runs the channel owner will get anywhere from 20-25 dollars, but once YouTube takes their cut each video with an ad will only be worth about 7 dollars. With billions of views the money will be rolling in in no time.

In first place being the top paid YouTuber we have… PewDiePie, or Felix Kjellberg. With around 40 million sub-scribers, and around 9.3 billion views his hard core gaming videos have made over 12 million dollars in the past 3 years! His channel consists of many different gaming videos, usually Minecraft based. With all the enthusiasm towards his channel he recently started showing his face.

Moving into 5th place we have the one and only SMOSH, consisting of 7 people who do skits challenges, and more. 22 million subscribers leaves them with 6 million dol-lars. Their funny skits and challenges have brought 4.5 billion views to the table. SMOSH all started with two best friends.

They started off small but grew quickly.

Jenna Marbles, you’ve probably at least heard her name if not watched one of her videos. She does everything from vlogs to challenges, also a lot of collabs. With over 15 million sub-scribers, this makes her the 7th biggest YouTube channel run by a woman (according to celeberitynetworth.com). How accom-plished she must feel, lots of people love her funny, quirky personality.

18th in the run The Fine Bros, probably best known for their “react videos” where they have children, sen-iors and teens react to viral videos. 3.1 billion Views and 14 million subscribers later leaves them with 2.2 million dollars. Their react videos are sure to make you react and… sub-scribe.

In 42nd place we have the Shaytards, a family full of Vloggers. The man who started it all was Shay Carl. People adore their family and love watching them which is why they have around 4 million subs and make about 1 million dollars. Shay started vlogging to record his life for his family to look back on. Now millions of people “live with them”; well that’s what it feels like.

Even though having so many loving fans and getting paid seems so perfect, being a professional YouTuber comes with some not so good things. You have to be committed to uploading every day to get paid, you have to make sure your videos are interesting, and most importantly you can’t let the hate comments get to you.

Sikhism is one of the youngest religions in the world. In fact it is the fifth largest religion in the world. Sikhism originated in Northern India in the state of Punjab during the 15th century. Sikhism is mon-otheistic which mean Sikhs believe in one god. The found-er of our religion is called Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru means spiritual teacher. Sikhism is based on Gurus and saints teaching. Guru Gobind Singh JI is our tenth Guru. He believed every-one is created equally and should all be treated equally. He created the same middle name for all the boys and girls. All boys should be named Singh that means lion and all girls are named Kaur, which means princess. People in the Sikh religion don’t cut their hair. Kids wear a patka like a Turban. Turban can be long or short and it can come in different colors, etc. Practicing Sikhs may have hair that goes to their thighs or longer. Sikhs can cut their hair but it is recommended that the Sikhs should not cut it. The Sikh

temple is called a Gurudwara. it is where they worship and pray. After their prayers, they eat vegetarian food, at the feast called Langer. Everybody sits

down on the carpet and shares the food. The Sikh community in Jacksonville had Turban Day at UNF. Sikhs tied turbans on different students at UNF and they enjoyed the Indian food and Indian music, which is called Bhangra, beat. So after the Turbans were tied they were given a brochure about Sikhism. So the turbans made for a colorful and informational day at UNF. That is what Sikhism is all about hopefully you learned new information. Here is a fun fact did you know, that the females were in the Sikh army in 17th century and led the army to fight against the king, when females else-

where were not treated equally to men. For more information about Sikhism you can go on SikhNet.com.

Palm Trees & Power Lines

Palm Trees & Power Lines Band Trees & Power Lines, a new pop/punk band originating in Jacksonville, has stolen teenage girls’ hearts through their groovy instrumentals and catchy lyrics. Voice and gui-tar Shafer Tasso, voice and guitar Josh Cravey, bass Kyle Bailey, and drummer Christian Parrales compose the band that is destined for stardom. Unfortunately, only Shafer and Josh were available for an interview, but they give ample description of why the band has be-come so successful so quickly.

Q: How long have y’all played your instruments and how did you get interested?

Josh: Well, I’ve been playing since I was 11, and actually bands like AC/DC and like a lot of classic rock bands really influenced me to start playing guitar, and that’s how I got started.

Shafer: Good answer! I’ve been playing, goodness gracious, I’ve been playing since I was probably about 13, um, so, 6 years, and I play a ton of instruments. I play piano, bass, drums, ukulele, guitar, all that good stuff.

Josh: And the triangle.

Shafer: And the triangle! I’m pretty wicked at the triangle. I can make that thing go ding. But, um, and bands that inspire me are like, you know, yeah AC/DC, or Guns & Roses, big bands like Queen. Another one bites the dust!

Q: How did your band meet?

Shafer: We actually met through a church, and I was at my friend’s church one time, and then Kyle was wearing an Angels and Airwaves shirt, which was one of my favorite bands, so I was like, “Hey man,” and he was like, “hey.” He thought I was weird at the time, so I was like, “whatever.” And then I found out he played bass and I was like, “let’s get him in here.” Yeah and later down the road…

Josh: I was actually in another band at the time.

Shafer: I went over to Josh’s house to record a song, and I was like “Hey man,” you know, and he was like “Hey dude, what’s up?” And

so I starting recording and Josh was just looking at me like, “man, this guy’s pretty good at guitar!” And so later on he asked me if I could join the band, I was like “yeah, yeah I can do that.”

Q: Was your band name influenced by Sugarcult’s album? Whose decision was it?

Josh: Yes it actually was. It was just my friend Justin, and we were just swiping through his iPod one day and we were just trying to come up with band names and he was like, “Palm Trees & Power Lines” I was like “that right there, that is our name.”

Q: How do you write your songs? Where do you get your inspiration from?

Shafer: Well, sometimes Josh and I sit down with our guitars and start singing about like, I don’t know, a monkey riding a tricycle, and eventually it turns into a song, man.

Josh: Yeah, it’ll usually turn into something cool.

Shafer: We’ll usually start with some really terrible idea, and some-how, it will blossom into a beautiful flower, which is a song, and that’s how that works.
