The W.O.W. Retreat began three years ago through the office of Student Affairs as an opportunity to bring women together to explore specific leadership topics. While the first retreat gave students a chance to review campus issues and develop innovative ideas to help eliminate those problems, last year’s weekend explored various aspects of diversity. This year’s theme of POW WOW actually stands for more than just a gathering. It was the acronym for our ultimate goal of the weekend which was Preparing Outstanding Well-Balanced Women of the World. Thirty fresh faces of Chatham’s College for Women came and took away more than just advice on professional development. All participants walked away with Colum-bia Fleece jackets, make-up bags, books and most importantly new friendships.

The weekend began on Friday March 25, 2011 with wealth coach Deborah Owens who shared importantinformation on how to get “A Purse of Your Own”, as well as the importance of being financially empowered. Saturday morning everyone came together to discuss fashion for the work place on a budget and following students got an opportunity to shop ‘til they dropped. All participants participated in an etiquette dinner that brought an end to Saturday night. By Sunday morning all the women were financially and professionally empowered. The retreat ended teaching these women dining and exercise tips. By the end of Sunday all students were ready to utilize all that they learned to apply their new information to life after W.O.W.! Dozens of dedicated cougar fanatics cheered on the softball team last week, Wednesday, March 30th, as they unveiled the Chatham Cougar’s new name. From now on that loveable feline will be known as, “Carson” the Cougar! Carson made his debut despite the unfortunate mix of rain and snow to meet the enthusiastic students, faculty and staff of our beloved school. All in attendance were thrilled to watch as our talented softball players played their way to victory. The sun might not have been out but the amount of school pride exhibited at this fine event was enough to make Chatham shine.

Hello Everyone, “It’s not so much how busy you are, but why you are busy. The bee is praised. The mosquito is swatted.” Mary O’Connor Soon we will celebrate the closing of Academic Year 2010 - 2011 which personally for me marks three outstanding years at Chatham University serving as your Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. So much have taken place since I came, the University celebrated its’ 140th anniversary, East Side became another location for Chatham, the School of Sustainability and the Environment was established and recently we named our Cougar, Carson. Through all of these exciting and monumental progress, one thing has

remained the same – you, the students. You have been busy like bees – your commitment to Chatham’s spirit is what makes Chatham a great place. Chatham family is like no other because of talented and progressive students who make the University what it is today. You serve the global community, you produce scholastic work, you compete athletically, being who you are have simply enriched us and you challenge Chatham to greater heights daily. You are praised and not swatted! In closing, I would like to congratulate all undergraduate and graduate students who will cross the stage on May 22nd. Don’t be a stranger . . . continue to be big thinkers and make the world a better place. To all, remember,

“Life is like a taxi. The meter just keeps a-ticking whether you aregetting some where or just standing still.” - Lou Erickson
